Here are seven adaptable ways to use them, plus the version and availability checks that help prevent surprises.
Find Routines on your Galaxy
On Android 13 and Android 14, Samsung places the feature under Settings > Modes and Routines. On Android 11 and Android 12, it is provided through the Bixby Routines app. Names, paths, and screens can differ by device, software, and app version. If you do not see the feature, search Settings for “Modes and Routines” or check your phone’s software version. Samsung’s setup guide describes the version differences.

To make a routine, open Modes and Routines, select Routines, tap Add, choose a condition under If, select an action under Then, and save it with a name and icon. Samsung’s US guide notes that triggers have additional options and instructions. Check the choices on your own phone; not every trigger or action is available on every model.

These are ideas built from Samsung-documented trigger and action categories, not guaranteed presets or recipes that work identically on every Galaxy. Choose the closest available condition and action on your device.

1. Make work hours quieter
If: You arrive at your work location, or a work schedule begins. Then: Choose a quiet or notification-related action if your device offers one. Samsung includes going to work and leaving work among its recommended routines. A schedule can be a useful alternative if you do not want to use location.
2. Set up a wind-down routine
If: Your chosen bedtime arrives. Then: Select an available display or notification adjustment, such as a screen setting or quieter notifications. Samsung lists preparing for sleep among recommended routines and documents time conditions and screen-setting actions. Pick settings that suit your own evening habits.

3. Create a morning handoff
If: Your wake-up time arrives. Then: Choose an available sound, brightness, or app action that helps start your day. Samsung’s guide uses a wake-up-time routine as an example of a custom routine; the specific actions you can pair with it depend on your device.

4. Prepare your phone for driving
If: Use a driving or activity condition if it appears on your phone, or start the routine manually. Then: Choose a relevant app-launch or notification action from the available list. Samsung says driving can be a usage-pattern-based condition when Customised services is enabled. Confirm availability on your device rather than relying on automatic detection.

5. Adjust settings when a particular app opens
If: You open a chosen app. Then: Adjust an available setting, such as brightness or notification behavior. App use is a documented trigger category, and brightness adjustment is a documented example action. This can be useful for an app you use in a particular context, such as reading or navigation.
6. Turn on Wi-Fi when you get home
If: You arrive at a home location. Then: Turn on Wi-Fi if that action is available and useful to you. Samsung documents location conditions and enabling Wi-Fi as examples. If you would rather not use a location trigger, consider a manual routine instead.

7. Prepare device settings for travel
If: Use a travel-related suggestion if it appears, or start a routine manually. Then: Select device settings appropriate to your trip from the actions your phone offers. Samsung lists travelling abroad as a possible usage-pattern-based condition when Customised services is enabled. A routine does not itself manage roaming charges, travel safety, or the suitability of your mobile plan.
Choose a trigger that fits the situation
| Trigger | Useful when | What to consider |

| Time | A task follows a regular schedule, such as bedtime or waking. | Choose a time that matches your routine; change it when your schedule changes. |
| Location | You want a setting to change on arrival or departure. | Check that the location condition is available and that you are comfortable using it. |
| App or activity | You want an action tied to opening an app or an activity condition offered by the phone. | Activity-based options can depend on device settings and Customised services. |
| Manual start | You want control over when a routine runs, or an automatic trigger is unavailable. | You need to start it yourself; Samsung also describes adding a routine widget to the Home screen. |
There is no universally best trigger. A schedule is predictable, location can respond to where you are, and a manual start gives you direct control. Check a routine before depending on it
- Review the actual conditions and actions shown on your phone; availability varies across models and software versions.
- Try a new routine in a low-stakes situation before relying on it for an important setting.
- If an app opens or a setting changes unexpectedly, look for running routines in the Routines screen and review their conditions and actions. Samsung also says a routine notification can be reviewed from the Quick panel; an active mode may appear in the lock-screen Now bar.
- Use a manual start or Home screen widget if automatic location or activity conditions are unavailable or not wanted.
