To make Google Calendar the destination for new events on an iPhone, add your Google account to Apple’s Calendar settings, turn on calendar syncing, then choose the Google calendar under Settings > Apps > Calendar > Default Calendar. New events created in Apple’s Calendar app will go there automatically.
This setting does not replace Apple Calendar as the iPhone’s system calendar app. If you want Google’s interface, features and account controls, use the Google Calendar app separately.

What “default calendar” means on an iPhone
iPhone has a setting called Default Calendar, but it controls the destination calendar for newly created events. It does not create a system-wide “default calendar app” choice.

When you select a Google calendar in that setting, an event you create in Apple’s Calendar app is assigned to that Google calendar unless you change the calendar while editing the event. Existing events are not moved, and the Apple Calendar interface remains the interface you are using.
#1 Best Overall
Apple’s documented Default Apps categories include items such as email, messaging, calling, browser, translation, passwords and codes, contactless apps and keyboards. Calendar is not listed as a replaceable default-app category. That is why selecting a Google calendar changes where events are saved, not which app opens whenever another app or website offers a calendar link.
If your goal is to have Google Calendar’s own screens open, install or open Google Calendar from the App Store and sign in. The destination setting and the Google app are two different choices, and you can use both at the same time.
Decide which Google workflow you need
| Workflow | Where a new event is saved | Interface you use | Google-only functions | Notification location |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Apple Calendar with a Google default | The Google calendar selected in Default Calendar | Apple Calendar | Features unavailable in Apple Calendar, such as event email notifications, creating new Google calendars and Room Scheduler, require Google Calendar | Apple Calendar and any other calendar app whose alerts are enabled |
| Google Calendar app | The account and calendar selected in Google Calendar’s event editor | Google Calendar for iPhone | Google’s own calendar features and account controls | Google Calendar notifications, subject to the app’s settings |
| Google events shown in Apple Calendar | Whichever calendar you select when creating the event | Apple Calendar, after Google account sync is enabled | Apple Calendar does not provide event email notifications, creation of new Google calendars or Room Scheduler | Alerts can be generated by the relevant calendar app; review settings if both apps notify you |
Choose the first workflow if you like Apple Calendar but want every new event to land in Google. Choose the second if Google’s interface or Google-only features matter more. The third is useful when you need to see Google events alongside other calendars in one Apple Calendar view.

For example, you might create quick appointments in Apple Calendar with a Google work calendar selected as the default, then open Google Calendar when you need a Google-specific function. The important distinction is that the default destination affects Apple Calendar’s composer; it does not control where events created in another app are stored.
Before you start
- Have the Google account credentials available so you can complete the Google sign-in flow.
- Decide which specific Google calendar should receive ordinary new events. A Google account can contain several calendars, and the setting selects one calendar rather than an account in the abstract.
- Decide whether you want Apple Calendar alerts, Google Calendar alerts, or both. Running both apps with notifications enabled can produce duplicate reminders.
- If you need event email notifications, creation of new Google calendars or Room Scheduler, plan to use Google Calendar’s app or website for those tasks because Apple Calendar does not provide them.
No accessory, subscription or physical device is required. The setup is an account and settings change on the iPhone.
Set a Google calendar as the destination for new events
1. Add your Google account to Apple Calendar
- Open Settings on the iPhone.
- Tap Apps, then Calendar.
- Tap Calendar Accounts.
- Tap Add Account, choose Google, and complete Google’s sign-in process.
Adding the account makes its calendars available to Apple Calendar. Follow the sign-in prompts shown on the phone, including any verification requested for the account. When setup finishes, the Google account should be listed with the other calendar accounts.
You can add more than one Google account, as well as other calendar accounts. That does not make every calendar a default simultaneously: the Default Calendar control points to one specific calendar at a time.
2. Turn on calendar syncing for an existing account
If the Google account is already on the phone but its calendars do not appear, open that account from Settings > Apps > Calendar > Calendar Accounts. Make sure the Calendars switch is enabled. An account can be present for another service while calendar syncing remains turned off.
After enabling the switch, give the phone a moment to load the available calendars, then return to the Calendar settings screen. If the account contains several calendars, each one may appear as a separate destination. If you intentionally do not want an account’s calendars in Apple Calendar, leave its Calendars switch off; it cannot then be selected as the Apple Calendar default.

3. Select the Google calendar as the default
- In Settings, go to Apps > Calendar.
- Tap Default Calendar.
- Choose the Google calendar that should receive newly created events.
Apple says events created afterward are automatically added to the calendar you select. Read the calendar name carefully if several calendars have similar names. Selecting a work, personal or shared Google calendar changes the destination for future events in Apple Calendar, so the exact choice matters.
This setting applies to events created in Apple’s Calendar app. It does not migrate older events, change the calendar attached to invitations that are already saved, or force events created in Google Calendar or another app into the same destination.
4. Confirm the choice with a test event
- Open Apple’s Calendar app.
- Tap the add button to create an event.
- Enter a temporary title and time.
- Check the Calendar field in the event editor. It should show the Google calendar you selected.
- Save the event, then check the same Google account in Google Calendar.
- Delete the test event when you have confirmed the destination.
The calendar field in the event composer is the final check. It shows the calendar that will receive that particular event, even if you have several accounts. You can still override the default for an individual event by tapping that field and selecting another calendar before saving.
How the setting behaves in daily use
The default is a starting choice, not a permanent lock. If a meeting belongs in a different account, open the event’s Calendar field and choose another synchronized calendar. That one event will follow the manual selection while later events continue to use the global default.
Changing the default later affects events created after the change. It does not rewrite existing events. If you switch from a personal Google calendar to a work Google calendar, appointments already saved in the personal calendar stay there unless you edit and move them individually.
Invitations and events created by other services can follow their own account and calendar rules. When an important event appears to be missing from Google Calendar, inspect the calendar named in Apple Calendar rather than assuming the phone used the default. Google warns that an event added to a calendar not associated with the Google account may not appear in Google Calendar or at calendar.google.com.
Use Google Calendar’s own iPhone interface instead
If “default” means you want Google’s app to be the screen you use, download or open Google Calendar from the App Store and sign in with the same Google account. Google describes its app as the easiest mobile sync option; events synchronize with your computer when you are signed in to the same account.
In this workflow, you do not need Apple’s Default Calendar setting to create events in Google Calendar. Google Calendar’s event editor determines the account and calendar. You can keep Apple Calendar installed for another account or for a combined view, but check which app you are using before creating an event.
An app preference is also separate from link handling. Apple’s documented default-app list does not include Calendar, so the available setting cannot make every calendar link launch Google Calendar automatically. Open Google Calendar directly when you need Google’s interface. The iPhone setting changes the destination inside Apple Calendar; it is not a command to replace Apple Calendar throughout iOS.

What you lose when Google calendars are viewed in Apple Calendar
Google Calendar can synchronize with Apple Calendar, but Google documents several functions that are not available there:
Recommended Free Tools
- Event email notifications: Apple Calendar does not provide this Google Calendar function.
- Creating new Google calendars: You cannot create a new Google calendar from Apple Calendar. Create it in Google Calendar’s app or on the website, then let it sync to the phone.
- Room Scheduler: This Google feature is not available in Apple Calendar.
For those tasks, use Google Calendar’s iPhone app or the Google Calendar website. Apple Calendar remains suitable for viewing synchronized events and creating ordinary events in an already available calendar. Choosing Apple Calendar for the interface is therefore a convenience choice, not a way to expose every Google feature inside Apple’s app.
Notifications and account visibility
When the same Google account is active in both apps, decide which app should alert you. Apple Calendar can notify you for synchronized events, and Google Calendar can notify you for the same account. If both are configured, one appointment may produce two alerts.
Google recommends changing notification settings in the relevant calendar app when alerts arrive from more than one app. Keep the app you use for event creation and the app you use for reminders aligned so you do not silence the wrong calendar. If you choose Google Calendar for notifications, review Google Calendar’s notification settings; if you choose Apple Calendar, review the corresponding Apple Calendar alerts.
Calendar visibility is separate from the default destination. A calendar can be synchronized to the phone and visible in Apple Calendar without being the default. Conversely, selecting a default does not hide or remove the other calendars; it only determines the initial calendar in the new-event editor.
Troubleshoot a missing Google calendar
Google does not appear under Default Calendar
- Go to Settings > Apps > Calendar > Calendar Accounts and verify that the Google account is listed.
- Open the account and turn on Calendars if it is disabled.
- Return to Settings > Apps > Calendar > Default Calendar and check again.
The Default Calendar list can only offer calendars that Apple Calendar can access through an account with calendar syncing enabled. If the account is present but the list is still incomplete, check that you are looking at the intended Google account and that the calendar you want belongs to it.
The Google account is listed, but no calendars are visible
Open the account’s settings and confirm the Calendars switch, not merely the presence of the account, is on. Wait for the calendars to load, then reopen the Default Calendar screen. A disabled sync switch means Apple Calendar has no calendar data to offer as a destination.
If several calendars are available, look for the exact calendar name rather than selecting a similarly named calendar from another account. The default is tied to the selected calendar, so an almost identical name can still send an event to the wrong place.
New events still go to the wrong account
Check both the global setting and the event itself. In Settings > Apps > Calendar > Default Calendar, confirm the intended Google calendar is selected. Then, while creating an event, inspect the Calendar field before saving. A manually selected calendar overrides the default for that event.

Google warns that an event added to a calendar not associated with the Google account may not appear in Google Calendar or at calendar.google.com. If an event is missing, identify the account and calendar shown in the event editor rather than assuming the phone saved it to Google.
Google Calendar is not showing older events
Google’s troubleshooting guidance says the iPhone Google Calendar app syncs past events for up to one year. For events older than that, visit calendar.google.com. This limitation concerns the Google app’s display of past events; changing the iPhone’s Default Calendar does not delete or relocate those older entries.
You receive duplicate notifications
When the same account is active in Apple Calendar and Google Calendar, both apps may be configured to alert you. Google recommends changing notification settings in the relevant calendar app when alerts arrive from more than one app.
Decide which app should notify you, then adjust that app’s calendar notifications and disable overlapping alerts in the other app. Keep the app you use for event creation and the app you use for reminders aligned so you do not silence the wrong calendar.

An event appears in Apple Calendar but not in Google Calendar
Open the event in Apple Calendar and inspect its calendar field. If it belongs to an iCloud, another Google account or another unsynchronized calendar, it will not automatically appear in the Google account you expected. Move the event to the synchronized Google calendar, save it, and then check Google Calendar again.

Keep accounts and calendars understandable
- Use descriptive calendar names when several Google calendars are available, so the destination is obvious in the event editor.
- Before saving an important invitation, verify the calendar field rather than relying only on the global default.
- If you use both apps, decide which one owns notifications to avoid duplicate alerts.
- Use Google Calendar for event email notifications, creating new Google calendars and Room Scheduler.
- Use Apple Calendar when you want a combined view of calendars from accounts that are synced to the phone.
- When troubleshooting, check the account and calendar name on the event itself before changing global settings.
The practical setup is therefore two-part: enable the Google account and its calendar sync, then select the exact Google calendar as Apple Calendar’s default destination. Use Google’s app whenever you need Google-specific functions or its interface.
Frequently asked questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I make Google Calendar the default calendar app on iPhone?
Not through the documented iPhone default-app controls. Apple’s Default Calendar setting chooses where new events created in Apple Calendar are saved; Calendar is not listed as a replaceable system default-app category. Open the Google Calendar app directly when you want Google’s interface.
Will changing Default Calendar move my existing events?
No. It affects events created afterward. Existing events remain on their current calendars until you edit each event and move it to another synchronized calendar.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhy is Google missing from the Default Calendar list?
Add the account under Settings > Apps > Calendar > Calendar Accounts, then open the account and enable Calendars. Return to Default Calendar after the Google calendars have loaded.
Can I choose one Google calendar instead of the whole account?
Yes. The setting lists available synchronized calendars. Select the specific work, personal or shared Google calendar that should receive new events.
Does this setting affect events created in the Google Calendar app?
No. The setting controls new events created in Apple’s Calendar app. Google Calendar uses its own event editor and account/calendar selection.
Why do I get two reminders for one event?
Apple Calendar and Google Calendar may both be notifying you for the same synchronized event. Choose which app should send alerts and adjust notification settings in the relevant apps.
Can Apple Calendar create a new Google calendar?
No. Google documents creating new Google calendars as a function unavailable in Apple Calendar. Create the calendar in Google Calendar’s app or website, then sync it to the iPhone.
Where are Google events older than one year in the iPhone app?
Google says its iPhone app syncs past events for up to one year. For older events, use calendar.google.com. This does not mean the iPhone’s Default Calendar setting deleted or moved them.
The Bottom Line
Add or enable your Google account in Settings > Apps > Calendar > Calendar Accounts, then choose the exact Google calendar under Default Calendar. That makes it the destination for new events created in Apple Calendar, but it does not replace Apple Calendar as the iPhone’s default app. Use Google Calendar’s app for its interface and features such as event email notifications, creating new calendars and Room Scheduler.
