Maharashtra is considering trauma-care centres at 100 km intervals along state and national highways, according to a Hindustan Times report. The proposal is not confirmed as an approved rollout: the report identifies no selected sites, dedicated budget, construction schedule or formal government order.
What Maharashtra is reportedly considering
Hindustan Times says the proposal emerged at a recent road-safety meeting involving several departments. It would place trauma-care centres at 100 km intervals on state and national highways. The report does not establish that the government has approved the plan or that construction has begun. Hindustan Times
The distinction matters: a spacing target is a policy proposal, not evidence that a staffed, equipped facility is available at each interval. The report does not identify proposed locations, funding for the centres, a delivery timetable or a current highway-by-highway inventory.
Why ambulance response is part of the proposal
The report says the transport department plans to procure 80–100 ambulances using the state Road Safety Fund. They would be deployed at high-risk locations and black spots, including the Mumbai–Pune Expressway, Samruddhi Mahamarg, highways in the Konkan region and remote tribal routes. Their reported purpose is to stabilise injured people and transport them to the nearest trauma facility.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Hindustan Times also reports that the department is working on an app or website showing ambulance availability and nearby hospitals, with a facility for crash victims or first responders to book an ambulance for a fee. Hospitals’ information is expected to be integrated, and private ambulance operators are being encouraged to register. No platform name, launch date or public availability is reported, so it should not be treated as a live service.
An unnamed transport department official told Hindustan Times that trauma centres and smoother ambulance availability “could be life-saving during the ‘golden hour’.” The report describes the golden hour as the first hour after an accident. The quotation is the official’s view as reported by the newspaper, not a published implementation guarantee.

What the reported accident figures show—and do not show
Hindustan Times, citing Maharashtra Transport Department data, reports 56,000 deaths in 129,000 road accidents over the 43 months from January 2023 through July 2026—nearly 43 fatalities a day. The figures underline the scale of the problem described in the report, but the underlying dataset is not independently verified by the other sources cited here. They do not establish how many deaths a proposed centre network would prevent.
How the proposal compares with earlier national trauma-care goals
A 100 km spacing objective predates the Maharashtra report. In a 2021 Lok Sabha answer, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said that designated trauma-care facilities every 100 km were an objective of the National Programme for Prevention and Management of Trauma and Burn Injuries. It reported 196 facilities set up or proposed during the 11th and 12th Five Year Plans and said the programme financially assisted government hospitals and medical colleges to upgrade or strengthen trauma care. Those are historical national programme figures, not current Maharashtra coverage. Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, 2021 Lok Sabha answer

A separate 2015 Lok Sabha answer described a national-highway objective: no trauma victim should have to travel more than 50 km, with a designated facility every 100 km. It said 140 locations had been identified in the 11th Five Year Plan, including facilities under the trauma-care scheme, PMSSY and institutions using their own funds; it also reported approval of 85 additional facilities during the 12th Plan. These figures describe historical programme planning, not a present-day count. 2015 Lok Sabha answer
| Measure | Geographic scope | Distance objective | Implementation status in the cited record |
|---|---|---|---|
| Maharashtra proposal reported in 2026 | State and national highways in Maharashtra | Trauma centres every 100 km | Under consideration, according to Hindustan Times; no approval, sites, budget or schedule reported |
| National programme objective described in 2021 | National trauma-care programme | Designated facilities every 100 km | Historical objective; 196 facilities said to have been set up or proposed during the 11th and 12th Five Year Plans |
| National-highway network objective described in 2015 | National highways | No victim to travel more than 50 km; a designated facility every 100 km | Historical identification and approval figures reported; not a current coverage measure |
Why distance targets do not prove operational coverage
A 2015 Rajya Sabha answer illustrates the difference between planned locations and working services. At that time, among 118 hospitals and medical colleges identified under the scheme, construction was complete at 95, underway at 10 and not started at 11; two projects could not be taken up and funds were not released. The answer said 39 centres were functional then. It cited construction delays, equipment procurement, memoranda, financial reporting and the availability of specialist doctors among implementation problems. None of these counts describes the present situation. 2015 Rajya Sabha answer

For Maharashtra’s proposal, meaningful coverage would depend on more than kilometre markers. The report links it to ambulance access; the historical records also show why construction, equipment and specialist staffing matter when assessing whether a designated centre can actually provide trauma care.
