Tokamaks keep an extremely hot plasma confined for relatively long periods inside a toroidal (doughnut-shaped) chamber with magnetic fields. Magnetised target fusion (MTF) first creates a magnetically insulated plasma target and then compresses it rapidly; one implementation, General Fusion’s LM26, uses mechanically driven compression inside a proposed liquid-metal-lined vessel.

Both approaches must satisfy the same physics: sufficiently high temperature, particle density and confinement time. Their engineering bets are different. Tokamaks concentrate on stable magnetic confinement, plasma heating and exhaust over sustained pulses. MTF trades some confinement duration for compression and must make target formation, implosion, stability, repetition and plant systems work together. A reported temperature milestone is not the same as fusion gain, net energy or electricity.

The common physics: three conditions every fusion design must meet

Different machines use different routes to fusion, but the governing requirements are shared. The ITER Organization explains them as “very high temperature (to provoke high-energy collisions); sufficient plasma particle density (to increase the likelihood that collisions do occur); and sufficient confinement time (to hold the plasma, which has a propensity to expand, within a defined volume).”

  • Temperature: Fuel ions need enough kinetic energy for fusion reactions to occur at a useful rate.
  • Density: More particles in the reacting volume increase the number of potential collisions.
  • Confinement time: The plasma must remain together long enough for reactions to produce meaningful energy before it cools or escapes.

The Lawson criterion combines these factors (with the precise formulation depending on the fuel and diagnostic convention). It is a physics test, not a synonym for a power plant. A machine can improve one variable while still falling short on the product of temperature, density and confinement time required for useful fusion.

What a tokamak does

Toroidal geometry and twisted magnetic fields

A tokamak is a torus: a closed ring-shaped vacuum vessel. As the U.S. Department of Energy’s tokamak explainer describes, toroidal-field coils generate a field around the long way of the ring, while a plasma current and additional coils create a poloidal field around the short way. The two components combine into helical, or twisted, field lines. Charged particles spiral around those lines rather than immediately striking the wall.

The magnetic geometry is not simply “a magnet holding plasma in place.” Operators must shape the plasma, control instabilities, heat it to fusion conditions and remove particles and energy that leave the confined region. Large tokamaks generally use external heating systems and the plasma current itself to raise temperature. Pulses can last for varying durations depending on the facility and operating regime; a commercial reactor would need a reliable, repeatable operating cycle.

Why the divertor matters

Particles and heat that escape the core are directed toward a divertor. The divertor receives an intense localized heat load and must also handle helium “ash” and impurities. ITER identifies divertor heat exhaust as a major unresolved engineering challenge for a practical fusion plant. A tokamak can achieve excellent core confinement while still facing a difficult problem at the edge, where heat and high-energy particles meet solid components.

Tokamak evidence and goals

Tokamak research has a long-running international experimental base. The DOE records that the Joint European Torus (JET) in England produced 59 megajoules of fusion energy in December 2021, more than doubling its 1997 record (DOE account). That is a historical fusion-energy result from a tokamak experiment; it is not a claim that JET supplied continuous electricity to the grid.

ITER is designed to study burning-plasma behavior rather than operate as a commercial generator. The DOE’s confinement overview describes an ITER design aim of about 500 megawatts of fusion power from roughly one-tenth as much injected power (DOE confinement overview). This is a design target, not achieved output, and it does not by itself establish net electric power after magnets, heating, cooling and other plant loads.

What magnetised target fusion does

A hybrid of magnetic insulation and compression

MTF is a family of concepts, not one standardized machine. The central idea is to create a plasma target that is already magnetized, then compress it so that density and temperature rise rapidly. Magnetic insulation reduces heat loss during the compression phase; mechanical compression supplies the additional work needed to reach fusion conditions. This places MTF between long-duration magnetic confinement and very rapid inertial compression in its operating strategy.

General Fusion’s stated implementation forms a plasma target and compresses it with low-speed mechanical drivers. Its technology description proposes a liquid-metal wall around the target. The company says that liquid metal is intended to absorb neutron energy, protect structural surfaces, help breed tritium from lithium and transfer heat to a heat exchanger. Those are design objectives and proposed plant functions, not proof that a commercial fuel cycle or power system has been demonstrated.

The operating sequence

  1. Form a target: Plasma and its magnetic field are created in a repeatable configuration. The target’s initial temperature, density, size and magnetic flux determine how much compression is required.
  2. Compress the target: Mechanical systems drive the surrounding liquid-metal or structural elements inward. Compression raises density and temperature while the embedded magnetic field helps limit thermal losses.
  3. Reach and diagnose the compressed state: Optical and particle diagnostics measure the plasma before, during and after compression. Stability is critical because asymmetric motion or turbulence can reduce the intended compression.
  4. Capture the reaction energy: In a deuterium–tritium design, fusion neutrons deposit energy in the surrounding blanket or liquid metal. A heat-transfer loop would then deliver that energy to a conventional power cycle.
  5. Reset for the next pulse: Drivers, liquid metal, diagnostics, vacuum systems and fuel handling must return to operating condition at a useful repetition rate. A single successful compression does not establish a power plant.

Because MTF relies on a sequence rather than a long steady plasma discharge, the compression timing, target-to-target reproducibility and mechanical lifetime of the drivers become central engineering questions. An MTF design can have a favorable peak state yet produce little average power if it cannot repeat that state reliably.

Tokamak and MTF compared

Axis Tokamak fusion Magnetised target fusion
Basic architecture Toroidal chamber with coordinated toroidal and poloidal magnetic fields. Magnetized plasma target followed by rapid compression; implementations differ.
Primary strategy Hold a hot plasma magnetically for enough time to satisfy fusion conditions. Use magnetic insulation for a target, then raise density and temperature through compression.
Confinement timescale Longer plasma pulses are pursued; duration depends on the facility and regime. Short compression event, followed by reset and repetition.
Mechanical systems Large magnets, heating equipment, vacuum vessel and divertor dominate the machine. Compression drivers and their alignment, force and fatigue are central in addition to plasma systems.
Heat and neutron concept Neutrons heat surrounding structures; divertor and first-wall systems must remove plasma heat. General Fusion proposes liquid metal to absorb neutron and plasma heat and carry it to a heat exchanger.
Fuel-cycle issue Deuterium–tritium operation requires tritium breeding, extraction and recycling. General Fusion says lithium in its proposed liquid wall would breed tritium; an integrated breeding balance remains to be demonstrated.
Evidence highlighted here JET’s 59 MJ fusion-energy result in December 2021; ITER goals are future design objectives. LM26 reported 1.1 keV electron heating before peak compression in October 2026; no directly comparable MTF fusion-energy output is established in the cited evidence.

The table compares architectures and evidence categories, not a race with one universal score. Tokamak fusion energy and an MTF electron-temperature measurement are different quantities measured under different conditions.

How the approaches allocate difficulty

Tokamaks: sustaining and exhausting a hot plasma

A tokamak’s central control problem is maintaining a stable plasma while minimizing transport across magnetic surfaces. Longer pulses increase the importance of current drive, feedback control, impurity management and component cooling. The reactor must also withstand neutron damage and move heat from the plasma edge into systems that can survive repeated operation.

The magnetic field does not eliminate contact with material surfaces. The first wall, blanket and divertor still receive radiation and heat. ITER lists neutron-resistant materials, remote maintenance, tritium handling and efficient heat removal among the unresolved requirements for practical fusion power (ITER overview).

MTF: making a target and compression cycle work every time

MTF shifts emphasis toward the initial target, the compression trajectory and repetition. The target must be formed with the right magnetic topology and enough reproducibility that each pulse starts from a known state. Compression must remain sufficiently symmetric and fast to reach the intended density before energy leaks away or instabilities grow.

The surrounding liquid-metal concept could reduce direct exposure of solid walls to some neutron and heat loads, but it introduces its own requirements: pumping and shaping a conductive liquid, controlling splashing or waves during compression, maintaining chemistry and purity, extracting tritium and transferring heat at plant scale. General Fusion presents these as reasons for its design; they are not yet equivalent to an operating commercial system.

Fuel, neutrons and the power-conversion problem

Why deuterium–tritium changes the plant

Most near-term fusion power concepts focus on deuterium–tritium (D–T) fuel because it has a comparatively favorable reaction rate at attainable temperatures. Tritium is radioactive and scarce, so a plant would need to breed it from lithium in a blanket, extract it, purify it and return it to the plasma. Breeding ratios projected on paper do not establish that a plant can achieve self-sufficiency once leakage, decay, processing losses and startup inventory are included.

Tokamak and MTF plants therefore share a fuel-cycle obligation even if their blankets look different. General Fusion’s liquid-metal proposal uses lithium-containing material for breeding; ITER’s broader program also treats tritium breeding and recycling as a major engineering issue. Neither a hot plasma nor a neutron signal alone demonstrates a closed fuel cycle.

Turning fusion energy into electricity

Fusion energy emerges first as particle energy, especially neutron energy in D–T reactions. A blanket or liquid-metal circuit must absorb that energy, protect magnets and structures, remove heat, and pass it to a turbine or another conversion system. Pumps, cryogenics, heating, vacuum equipment, drivers and controls consume electricity. “Fusion power” refers to reaction output; “net electric power” requires the entire plant to export more electricity than it consumes.

What the latest cited milestones actually show

Milestone What was measured What it does not establish
JET, December 2021 DOE reports 59 MJ of fusion energy from a tokamak experiment. Continuous commercial electricity, a complete reactor fuel cycle or profitability.
LM26, October 8, 2026 General Fusion and UKAEA reported 1.1 keV electron heating, equivalent to 12.6 million °C, measured by Thomson scattering just before peak compression; the technical paper was submitted for peer review (announcement). Peak temperature, fusion-energy gain, Lawson-criterion achievement, net energy or grid electricity.
ITER design objective DOE describes an aim of 500 MW of fusion power for about one-tenth that injected power (DOE). An achieved experimental result or net electric output.

The LM26 result is significant as a reported plasma-heating milestone, but its placement matters: it was recorded before peak compression. Calling it a peak temperature or a gain result would overstate the measurement. The cited evidence contains no directly comparable MTF figure for total fusion energy output, so temperature, neutron rate or compression ratio should not be substituted for a tokamak’s megajoule result.

LM26’s stated roadmap and its limits

General Fusion’s LM26 program page describes a sequence involving plasma formation, compression and later demonstrations of higher temperature and Lawson-criterion performance. The company says its Lawson demonstration uses hydrogen as a proxy for D–T operating conditions. Hydrogen-proxy results can validate aspects of plasma behavior, but they are not the same as demonstrating D–T fusion power.

The company also lists a first-of-a-kind plant around 2035 as a goal. That date is a corporate target, not an established delivery date. Reaching it would require successful integration of compression drivers, liquid-metal handling, neutron shielding, tritium processing, heat extraction, maintenance systems, controls and a repeatable operating cycle.

Engineering hurdles shared by both concepts

  • Materials under neutron flux: Fast neutrons can displace atoms, cause swelling and embrittlement, activate components and limit service life.
  • Heat exhaust: Tokamak divertors face concentrated edge heat; MTF must remove heat from its target region and compression hardware without disrupting the next pulse.
  • Remote maintenance: Activated components cannot be serviced like ordinary industrial machinery. Designs need replaceable modules, remote tooling and access paths.
  • Tritium breeding and recycling: The plant must breed enough tritium, recover it safely and control permeation and inventory.
  • Heat removal and power conversion: A useful reactor needs a durable blanket or liquid circuit, pumps and a thermal cycle with acceptable efficiency.
  • Reliability and availability: Average electrical output depends on uptime, maintenance intervals and repetition rate, not only on the best pulse.

ITER’s overview groups these issues among the major steps between laboratory fusion and a practical power system. A liquid-metal wall may address selected interfaces, while a tokamak’s established magnetic configuration may offer a mature research base; neither fact removes the need for an integrated plant demonstration.

How to read claims about “breakthrough” fusion

  1. Identify the quantity: Is the number temperature, density, confinement time, fusion energy, fusion power, gain or net electricity?
  2. Check the fuel: Hydrogen-proxy experiments and D–T shots answer different questions.
  3. Locate the measurement in the pulse: Before compression, at peak compression and after the event are not interchangeable conditions.
  4. Separate output from input: Plasma heating or fusion power does not automatically include driver, magnet, cryogenic or plant electricity.
  5. Look for repetition: A power plant needs a stable cycle, maintainable components and high availability.
  6. Check the status: “Target,” “milestone,” “submitted for peer review” and “demonstrated” carry different evidentiary weight.

Which approach is different for which problem?

If the question is how a machine confines a plasma, the contrast is straightforward: a tokamak relies on toroidal magnetic geometry for sustained confinement, while MTF uses magnetic confinement for a target and then adds compression. If the question is which one is closer to commercial electricity, the cited milestones do not support a single winner. Tokamaks have a longer experimental record, including JET’s 2021 fusion-energy result, but still face reactor-scale materials, exhaust and fuel-cycle challenges. MTF has demonstrated target formation, compression work and a reported LM26 heating milestone, while its Lawson performance and integrated plant systems remain future steps in the company’s roadmap.

The most useful comparison is therefore architectural: tokamaks spend engineering effort on long-lived plasma control and exhaust; MTF spends more of its effort on repeatable target production, rapid compression and mechanical-plus-liquid-metal integration. Both must ultimately demonstrate the same endpoint—reliable fusion reactions whose recovered heat can be converted to net electricity over a maintainable operating cycle.
