For most people, a wired USB-C power bank is the better default because it is faster when its Power Delivery output matches the phone, works with more devices, and does not add a pack to the back of the phone. A magnetic Qi2 bank is the better convenience choice when the phone and case support magnetic charging and you want to keep using the phone without a cable. The right answer depends on the exact phone input, case, bank output, usable capacity, weight and travel rating—not on the word “magnetic” alone.
Magnetic vs. wired power banks at a glance
| Priority | Usually the better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Fastest charging | USB-C wired | USB Power Delivery can use the phone’s supported wired input; wireless output is limited by both the Qi2 bank and the phone. |
| Broad device compatibility | USB-C wired | A cable can charge phones, tablets, earbuds and other USB devices with the appropriate connector. |
| One-handed, cable-free use | Magnetic Qi2 | Magnets align the charger to a compatible phone, so there is no cable hanging from the handset. |
| Lowest attached bulk while holding the phone | USB-C wired, with the bank kept in a pocket or bag | A magnetic pack remains attached and can make the phone thicker or heavier in your hand. |
| Easy capacity comparison | Neither by itself | Printed mAh is stored-cell capacity. Conversion losses mean the phone receives less. |
| Air travel | Either, if within the airline rules | Check the bank’s watt-hours and carry it in cabin baggage. |
Some products combine both approaches: a magnetic Qi2 pad and a USB-C output. That hybrid can provide cable-free charging at a desk and faster wired charging when you need it.

How the two charging methods work
Wired USB-C charging
A wired bank sends power through a cable. The important specification is not just the bank’s maximum wattage, but whether its USB-C Power Delivery profile matches what the phone can accept. Apple says a USB-C Power Delivery charger and cable can charge iPhone 15 and later faster than older USB-A charging. On those iPhones, a USB-A charger is limited to 7.5W. A multi-port adapter, hub or other connected accessory can also reduce the power delivered to the phone. See Apple’s charging guidance for the applicable iPhone models and conditions: Apple Support.

Magnetic Qi2 charging
Qi2 uses a magnetic attachment system to align the phone and charging coil. The Wireless Power Consortium says magnetic alignment is intended to improve positioning, while Qi certification requires independent testing for safety and interoperability. Only certified products may display the Qi or Qi2 logo as a reassurance of those characteristics. Confirm certification and compatibility for the specific phone, case and bank; “magnetic” by itself does not guarantee Qi2.
Original Qi2 introduced a 15W charging level. The later Qi2 25W standard is branded for up to 25W and is described by the Wireless Power Consortium as nearly 70% more power than original Qi2. Those are standard-level figures, not a promise that every phone will charge at that rate. Both the phone and the bank must support the relevant capability, and temperature, alignment, battery level and software can change the result. The WPC’s standards overview and Qi2 25W announcement explain the distinction: Qi wireless charging overview and Qi2 25W release.
Which is faster in real use?
Wired speed is a matching exercise
Read the phone’s maximum wired input and the bank’s USB-C output together. A bank rated at 30W cannot force a phone designed for less to take 30W, but a bank with too little output can become the bottleneck. Use a USB-C-to-USB-C cable that supports the required Power Delivery profile. If the phone shows a slow-charge message, test another cable, port and charger profile before blaming the battery cells.

Multiple devices sharing a bank can also change the result. Some banks divide their available output when a second port is used; a hub or adapter can negotiate a lower level. The highest number printed on the box therefore describes a maximum condition, not necessarily the power reaching your phone while other accessories are connected.
Wireless speed varies more
Wireless charging has an air gap and depends on coil alignment. A correctly aligned Qi2 pack can be convenient and consistent, but it is not automatically faster than a cable. Heat, a thick or misaligned case, movement and the phone’s own charging limits can reduce power. There is no universal rule that every magnetic bank is slower than every wired bank, and no independent head-to-head study establishes a single charge-count or efficiency result for all products.
Apple notes that charging can slow or pause in extreme temperatures and that heavy apps can reduce charging speed. Wireless charging may warm the phone; using navigation, gaming or video while the pack is attached can increase that heat. Remove a case that interferes with alignment, keep vents unobstructed and let the phone cool if charging repeatedly pauses. Apple’s guidance covers temperature and usage effects: Apple charging guidance and iPhone Air MagSafe Battery guidance.

Compatibility: check the phone, case and bank together
Phone support
Before buying a magnetic model, identify the phone’s wireless standard and maximum wireless input. A phone may support ordinary Qi but not magnetic alignment, or support a magnetic system at a lower power than the bank advertises. A USB-C bank avoids that wireless-standard question, although the phone still needs a compatible cable and wired charging protocol.

Case and accessories
Magnetic attachment works through only a limited distance. A thick case, wallet, metal plate, ring or camera accessory can weaken the connection or prevent charging. Check the bank maker’s case guidance and use a case designed for the phone’s magnetic system. Anker’s MagGo 10K FAQ, for example, says cases can affect charging and lists the model as compatible with iPhone 12–15 series but not Android. That is a model-specific claim, not a rule for every magnetic bank: Anker MagGo Power Bank (10K), A1654.
Certification and model identity
Look for the exact Qi2 certification entry or the manufacturer’s precise compatibility list. The WPC database lists JODA MagQ 10, model JD-PB011, as Qi2 version 2.0.0 with a Magnetic Power Profile and 15W potential load power; it was certified on August 20, 2024. This demonstrates a certified category example, not a recommendation or a guarantee that the product is currently sold: WPC certified-product database entry.

Capacity: why a 10,000mAh label does not equal a full 10,000mAh of phone charging
Power banks rate their internal cells, while your phone receives energy after voltage conversion, cable losses and—in wireless mode—coil losses and heat. Compare watt-hours when possible, then treat any “number of charges” claim as an estimate for a particular phone and test condition.
Anker gives a model-specific example on its MagGo 10K page: the A1654 is listed as 10,000mAh and 38.5Wh, while its FAQ estimates 30% to 45% energy loss in the cells and conversion circuitry and about 6,000 to 7,000mAh available to power devices. That is the manufacturer’s estimate for this model, not an independent or universal efficiency measurement. Wireless use can differ again because the phone and bank must transfer power across a gap.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhen comparing two banks, record the rated Wh, whether the figure is a stored-cell rating, the output wattage and the weight. A larger printed capacity may deliver fewer practical hours if the bank is inefficient, very heavy or used at a high wireless loss.

Weight, bulk and using the phone while it charges
A wired bank lets you put the battery in a pocket or bag and hold only the phone. The trade-off is a cable that can snag or require two-handed handling. A magnetic pack stays aligned while you walk and leaves the phone’s charging port free, but the attached mass changes the balance and can make the phone harder to grip or fit in a pocket. That handling issue is practical rather than a measured performance result, so consider the way you actually use the phone.
Check dimensions as well as grams. A pack that is short but thick can interfere with a camera bump; one that extends below the phone can make landscape gaming uncomfortable. If you use a stand, car mount or wireless charging pad, verify that the attached pack does not block it.

- Write down the phone’s limits. Note its maximum wired input, wireless standard, wireless wattage and connector. For an iPhone 15 or later, favor a USB-C PD bank and cable if speed is important.
- Decide whether the phone must remain free of an attached object. Choose wired if you will often type, game, use a car mount or keep the phone in a pocket while charging. Choose magnetic if cable-free handling is the main reason to buy.
- Verify the case. Test the phone and case combination or choose a case explicitly designed for the relevant magnetic system. Do not assume a generic magnetic ring provides Qi2 interoperability.
- Compare output, not just capacity. For wired charging, match USB-C PD output to the phone. For wireless charging, confirm whether the bank is original Qi2 15W or Qi2 25W and whether the phone supports that level.
- Compare usable energy and weight. Prefer a stated Wh figure and read any manufacturer qualification around conversion loss. Include the weight of a magnetic pack while attached, not only the bank’s capacity.
- Check travel eligibility before ordering. Read the printed Wh rating and your airline’s battery policy. A high-mAh label without a Wh figure may require converting the rating or asking the manufacturer.
Can you take a power bank on a plane?
For U.S. passenger air travel, the FAA says power banks must be carried in carry-on baggage, not checked luggage. Under its stated rules, batteries up to 100Wh are allowed; 101–160Wh requires airline approval. Airlines may impose stricter limits, quantity rules or procedures, so check the operating carrier before travel. The FAA guidance is here: FAA passenger battery guidance.
The 38.5Wh rating published for the A1654 example is below the FAA’s 100Wh threshold, but that does not replace the carrier’s rules. Keep the label visible, protect exposed ports, and carry the bank where crew can inspect it. International requirements can differ from U.S. rules.
Common problems and fixes
The magnetic bank keeps disconnecting
- Remove a thick, metal or wallet-style case and test again.
- Clean the phone and pack surfaces and center the pack over the coil.
- Check that the phone model is on the bank’s compatibility list.
- If the bank is Qi2-certified but the phone is not magnetically compatible, use a cable or a compatible case rather than forcing the attachment.
Charging is slower than expected
- For wired charging, use the USB-C port, a USB-C-to-USB-C cable and a PD profile the phone supports.
- Disconnect other devices if the bank shares or reduces output across ports.
- For wireless charging, stop heavy apps, remove insulating cases and move the phone out of direct heat.
- Remember that a 15W or 25W rating is a maximum capability shared by the phone and bank, not a guaranteed sustained rate.
The bank runs out sooner than the label suggests
- Compare delivered-energy estimates rather than the printed mAh alone.
- Account for conversion, wireless-transfer and heat losses.
- Check whether the phone is being used heavily while charging; the phone may consume much of the incoming power.
Bottom line
Buy a wired USB-C power bank when speed, broad compatibility and keeping extra weight off the phone matter most. Buy a magnetic Qi2 bank when aligned, cable-free charging is worth the attached bulk and your phone and case support it. A hybrid model can cover both situations. In every case, choose from the phone’s actual input limits, the bank’s USB-C and wireless outputs, usable watt-hours, weight and airline rating—not from the magnetic label alone.
