The announcement also named 11 new member organizations, introduced a neutral governance structure with a Technical Steering Committee (TSC), and outlined a three-part, access-network-agnostic roadmap.
What changed when Magma moved to the Linux Foundation?
The Linux Foundation’s April 2021 release described Magma as an open-source mobile-core platform for network operators. It said the project’s collaboration with the Open Infrastructure Foundation and OpenAirInterface Software Alliance had become the Magma Core Foundation after Magma moved to the Linux Foundation.

The stated goal was a neutral, cross-community structure for developing open infrastructure code. “We are pleased to see the Magma Core Foundation continue to evolve as a leader in network innovation,” said Arpit Joshipura, general manager for Networking, Edge, and IoT at the Linux Foundation. These statements describe the 2021 announcement; they are not independent evidence of later deployment results or continuing governance.

- Whitestack
It cited Arm, Deutsche Telekom and Facebook as examples of existing members. The count and membership list come from the Linux Foundation’s 2021 announcement and should not be read as a current membership roll.
What was Magma’s announced architecture?
The roadmap was presented as agnostic to 3GPP generation and to the type of access network, with support for cellular or Wi‑Fi access. The release also said the platform could support a radio access network with what it characterized as minimal development and deployment effort. That characterization was a stakeholder description, not an independently reported test.
| Named component | What the announcement establishes |
|---|---|
| Access Gateway | One of the three major components in the announced Magma architecture; the release supplied no detailed implementation or performance specification. |
| Orchestrator | One of the three major components in the announced architecture; compatibility and operational details were not provided in the release. |
| Federation Gateway | One of the three major components intended to support the roadmap’s broader, cross-community telecom direction; no benchmark or deployment matrix was supplied. |
The release connected these components with collaboration across communities and end-to-end telecom solutions. Irfan Ghauri, director of operations of the OpenAirInterface Software Alliance, said: “The seed code for one of the main components of the Magma core (MME) is in fact OAI.”

How was open governance organized?
The announcement described a new neutral governance model and named five newly elected Technical Steering Committee members:
- Marie Bremner
- Raphael Defosseus
- Hunter Gatewood
- Scott Moeller
- Pravin Shelar
The release presented the TSC as part of a cross-community structure for technical direction. It does not establish that these individuals still hold those roles.
Mark Collier, COO of the Open Infrastructure Foundation and a member of the Magma Core Foundation governing board, said: “We support the development of Magma to form a next-generation mobile networking stack that’s aligned with our mission to create open infrastructure code that runs in production.” This is an attributed stakeholder view, not independent validation of production use.

What did the announcement actually prove?
It documented a foundation and governance transition, a 2021 membership expansion of 11 organizations, the three component names, and the initial TSC lineup. It did not provide a compatibility matrix, performance benchmark, adoption study, or independently verified deployment results. Company statements in the release about customer experience, cost reductions, readiness or deployments remain claims by the named speakers.
