Choose the Magico A3 if your room can accommodate a 44-inch, 110-pound floorstander and you want the higher published sensitivity and deeper stated bass extension. Choose the Magico A1 if a compact cabinet is easier to place and you can provide a stable stand, adequate clearance, and an amplifier comfortable with a low-sensitivity 4-ohm load. Neither model is automatically “the room-size speaker.” The sensible choice depends on floor area, listening level, bass expectations, delivery access, stand logistics, and amplifier capability.
The comparison below uses Magico’s current product specifications, the company’s launch documentation, and independent A1 reviews and measurements. Frequency-response and sensitivity figures are identified by source because they are not interchangeable, and no published number guarantees the response you will get in your own room.

A3: a dedicated floorstanding system
Magico describes the A3 as a three-way, four-driver floorstander. Its 1.1-inch beryllium tweeter handles high frequencies, a 6-inch driver handles the midrange, and two 7-inch drivers handle bass. The cabinet is 44 inches tall, 9.25 inches wide, and 11 inches deep, with a listed weight of 110 pounds. Magico says the enclosure is formed with machined 6061 T6 aircraft-grade aluminum on its product page (manufacturer description).

That height can place the tweeter near a seated listener’s ear level, but the speaker still needs breathing room from walls and enough space for toe-in and safe access. The cabinet’s nominal depth is not the whole installation footprint: speaker terminals, cables, base hardware, and the distance you leave behind the cabinet all extend beyond 11 inches. A narrow cabinet can therefore require more practical floor area than its width suggests.
A1: compact cabinet, not a shelf speaker
The A1 is a two-way bookshelf loudspeaker with a 1.1-inch beryllium tweeter and one 6.5-inch mid-bass driver. Its cabinet measures 15.6 inches high, 8.5 inches wide, and 12 inches deep, and weighs 48 pounds. Magico’s own description of the design includes a fully braced aluminum enclosure, beryllium dome tweeter, carbon Nanographene cone, and elliptical crossover (Magico press release).
“Bookshelf” describes the form factor, not the recommended location. A shelf can add reflections, place the tweeter at the wrong height, and leave too little space behind the cabinet. A rigid, stable stand normally provides better control over height, orientation, and isolation from furniture. The stand’s top plate, width, depth, mass, and attachment method must suit a 48-pound speaker; the finished footprint will be larger than the A1 cabinet alone.
How much room does the A3 need?
No source establishes a universal room-size cutoff for the A3, so a rule such as “A3 for large rooms only” would be misleading. Use a physical and acoustic checklist instead:

- Measure the complete area available for each speaker, including the space needed to aim the cabinets toward the listening position.
- Confirm that a 44-inch-tall, 110-pound cabinet can be delivered through doors, hallways, stairwells, and turns without damage or unsafe lifting.
- Leave room for rear and side clearance, power-amplifier cables, and access to the terminals.
- Check that the listening position is not forced immediately against a wall simply to make the speakers fit.
- Plan for children, pets, foot traffic, and furniture that could contact a heavy cabinet.
A3 suitability is therefore a geometry and listening-goal decision, not a square-footage formula. A physically large room may still be difficult if the layout leaves no placement flexibility; a smaller room may work if the listener can position the speakers and listening seat sensibly and control bass with setup.
Will the A1 work with your amplifier?
Magico currently lists the A1 at 84 dB sensitivity and 4 ohms nominal impedance. That combination is more demanding than the A3’s published 88 dB and 4-ohm figures, especially when you want high playback levels or sit far from the speakers. The lower sensitivity means the amplifier must supply more power for the same acoustic output, while the 4-ohm load requires an amplifier that remains stable rather than merely advertising a high wattage into an easier impedance.
Independent evidence reinforces the need for careful matching without creating a universal wattage prescription. What Hi-Fi? describes the A1 as low in sensitivity and says a capable amplifier is needed (review). A Hi-Fi News laboratory report measured A1 sensitivity at 81.6 dB, 82.4 dB, and 82.3 dB under its stated methods (lab report). Those measured values should not be silently substituted for Magico’s rating: they come from a particular laboratory method, while the 84 dB figure is the current manufacturer specification.
Amplifier-matching procedure
- Read the amplifier’s 4-ohm specifications. Look for continuous power or current capability into 4 ohms, not only a headline figure measured into 8 ohms.
- Check protection behavior. An amplifier that frequently enters protection, becomes excessively hot, or sounds strained is not a good match, even if its nominal wattage appears adequate.
- Account for listening distance and level. A nearfield listener at moderate levels places a different demand on the amplifier than a listener several meters away who wants orchestral peaks or cinema-level playback.
- Use the actual amplifier for an audition when possible. If that is impossible, audition with an amplifier of comparable 4-ohm stability and power capability rather than relying on a different low-demand speaker.
- Leave headroom. Operating an undersized amplifier at its limit can cause clipping, which is more dangerous to a tweeter than clean output within the amplifier’s capability.
Neither Magico’s specifications nor the independent reviews justify naming one required wattage for every room. Amplifier design, listening distance, music crest factor, room gain, and the listener’s preferred level all change the result.

Bass extension: what the published numbers do—and do not—say
The current A3 product page lists 26 Hz–50 kHz. Magico’s original A3 launch release states 22 Hz–50 kHz (launch release). These are two published figures from different documents; they should not be merged into a single “official” range. For present-day product-page specifications, use 26 Hz–50 kHz and identify 22 Hz as the launch-document figure.
The current A1 page lists 35 Hz–50 kHz. On paper, the A3 therefore reaches lower than the A1, and its two 7-inch bass drivers provide a different low-frequency architecture from the A1’s single 6.5-inch mid-bass driver. That does not guarantee that every A3 will sound deeper in every room. Boundary reinforcement, listening position, room modes, crossover behavior, and playback level can alter perceived and measured bass substantially.
Manufacturer frequency-response ranges are normally measured under specified conditions; they are not the same as a flat response at the listening seat. Treat the values as design and comparison information. If deep bass, high level, or consistent low-frequency balance is central to the purchase, audition both models in a room with similar dimensions and furnishings, or use room measurement after installation.
Placement and stands for the A1
Independent reviewers have reported positioning the A1 well into a room and using substantial stands. Those are documented review setups, not mandatory distances for every owner. They do establish an important practical point: compact dimensions do not remove the need for placement experimentation.

Stand requirements
- Choose a stand rated for at least the speaker’s 48-pound mass, with a top plate that supports the cabinet securely.
- Match stand height so the tweeter is near ear level in the normal listening position; verify this with the listener seated, not standing.
- Use a broad, stable base and check for wobble before placing the speaker.
- Confirm that the stand does not block the rear port or terminals and that cable bends do not pull the speaker forward.
- Secure the speaker against accidental knocks where the stand and room conditions require it.
Do not assume a heavy stand automatically improves sound. Stability, correct height, safe support, and freedom to position the speaker are the primary requirements. The Absolute Sound and What Hi-Fi? reviews provide examples of substantial-stand and in-room positioning choices (The Absolute Sound review; What Hi-Fi? review).
Positioning process
- Start with the speakers symmetrically placed relative to the room’s main listening axis.
- Keep the tweeters at the intended seated-ear height and angle both cabinets toward the listening position by the same amount.
- Move the pair forward and backward in small, equal increments while listening for changes in bass evenness and image focus.
- Adjust side-to-side spacing and toe-in together; changing only one speaker can create an unstable center image.
- After each move, check that furniture, walls, and shelves are not creating an obvious reflection or blocking the cabinet.
The final position is a compromise among bass smoothness, stereo image, traffic clearance, and visual practicality. A1 owners should not place the cabinets on a shelf simply because they fit there.
Which model fits common room and system priorities?
| Your priority | More natural starting point | Reason and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Deeper published bass and higher sensitivity | A3 | The current A3 page lists 26 Hz–50 kHz and 88 dB sensitivity; the launch document lists 22 Hz–50 kHz, so identify the source when quoting the range. |
| Small cabinet and flexible furniture layout | A1 | The 15.6-inch cabinet is easier to move than a 44-inch floorstander, but a proper stand and clearance remain part of the installation. |
| Limited amplifier current or uncertain 4-ohm stability | Neither until the amplifier is verified | Both are listed as 4 ohms; the A1’s lower 84 dB published sensitivity makes matching especially important. |
| Minimal additional hardware | A3 | The A3 is self-supporting; the A1 requires stands or another genuinely stable support solution. |
| Easy lifting and frequent rearrangement | A1, with safe handling | The A1 weighs 48 pounds per cabinet, but lifting it onto a stand still requires care. The A3 weighs 110 pounds per cabinet. |
| Guaranteed performance for a particular room size | Neither can be chosen by size alone | No cited source provides a room-size threshold, and in-room response depends on placement and acoustics. |
A practical decision path before purchase
- Draw the room. Mark walls, doors, furniture, listening seat, and the maximum safe placement area. Add the A3’s cabinet dimensions or the A1’s cabinet plus stand footprint.
- Measure access. Check the route from delivery point to room, including stair turns and narrow doorways. The A3’s 110-pound weight makes this a real logistical issue.
- Identify your listening target. Decide whether your priority is moderate nearfield listening, sustained loud playback, organ and electronic bass, or a visually unobtrusive installation. Do not infer the answer from cabinet type alone.
- Verify the amplifier. Confirm 4-ohm stability, realistic continuous output, ventilation, and protection behavior. Treat the A1’s lower sensitivity as a reason to be especially conservative.
- Plan the A1 stand if applicable. Select height, top-plate dimensions, stability, and cable clearance before ordering the speaker.
- Audition in comparable conditions. Use the same amplifier, source, listening position, and approximate placement when comparing models. A dealer demonstration in a different room cannot predict your exact bass response.
- Recheck placement after installation. Allow time for symmetrical positioning and small forward/backward adjustments rather than judging either model from an improvised first location.
What the specifications leave unresolved
Published sensitivity, impedance, dimensions, and frequency range are useful for screening compatibility, but they do not describe every audible or practical outcome. The figures do not establish a universal room-size recommendation, a guaranteed maximum sound level, or a particular tonal balance in your room. They also do not tell you whether your amplifier’s protection circuit will tolerate the speaker’s real impedance behavior; that is why amplifier documentation and an audition matter.

Prices, availability, and model generation
Magico’s A3 launch release gave a suggested retail price of $9,800 per pair and a first-quarter 2018 shipping target. That is historical launch information, not a current price. Current dealer pricing, local currency, inventory, warranty terms, and delivery charges are not established by the specifications cited here, so obtain a dated quote from an authorized seller before treating any figure as payable today.
News about a newly announced A3 2027 revision should not be confused with the original A3 product page used in this comparison. Confirm the exact model generation, included hardware, and current specification sheet on the quotation before ordering.
Bottom line: A3 or A1?
Select the Magico A3 when you have a suitable floor plan, safe delivery access, and an amplifier that can control a 4-ohm load. Its published 88 dB sensitivity and lower stated bass limit make it the more straightforward candidate for listeners who prioritize output headroom and bass extension without adding stands.

Select the Magico A1 when a compact cabinet is valuable and you can treat the stand, placement, and amplifier as part of the speaker system. Its 84 dB published sensitivity—and lower values reported by an independent laboratory—make amplifier capability a central purchase check, not an afterthought.
If you cannot verify the amplifier or provide a stable, well-positioned stand for the A1, do not choose it solely because the cabinet is smaller. If the A3 cannot be delivered safely or placed with useful clearance, do not choose it solely because its specifications look larger. The right model is the one whose physical demands, electrical requirements, and bass expectations you can satisfy in your actual room.
