Good alternatives to the Magico A3 include the Bowers & Wilkins 803 D4, Focal Sopra N°3 and Wilson Audio Sasha V. They are not sonic equivalents: each uses a different cabinet alignment, driver layout and impedance profile. Use the specifications below to narrow an audition list, then verify current prices, dealer support and amplifier compatibility in your country.
What the Magico A3 is, and what an alternative must match
The Magico A3 is a three-way floorstanding loudspeaker built around a sealed, extensively braced 6061-T6 aluminum cabinet. Its driver complement comprises a 1-inch MB7 beryllium-dome tweeter, a 6-inch graphene Nano-Tec midrange and two 7-inch graphene Nano-Tec bass drivers. The sealed enclosure and rigid metal construction are central to its design identity: bass alignment, cabinet behavior and placement requirements differ from those of a ported tower.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
Magico published 88 dB sensitivity, 4-ohm impedance, a 22 Hz–50 kHz frequency-response range and a recommended 50–300 W RMS amplifier range. The cabinet measures 44 × 11 × 9.25 inches and weighs 110 lb. Magico’s December 2017 announcement listed an original US suggested retail price of $9,800 per pair and a planned first-quarter 2018 shipment. Those figures are launch-era historical information, not a current quote or assurance of availability.

An alternative therefore should be judged on more than response bandwidth. Consider the cabinet alignment, low-frequency behavior in your room, the speaker’s real electrical load, physical access to the listening room, local service and the amplifier you actually intend to use.

These measurements are not directly interchangeable. Focal specifies its response tolerance and low-frequency point under stated conditions; Bowers & Wilkins gives a ±3 dB figure from the reference axis; Wilson Audio reports a room-average response. None of those numbers predicts which speaker will sound preferable in your room.
Bowers & Wilkins 803 D4: a more sensitive vented-box option
What changes compared with the A3
The 803 D4 replaces the A3’s sealed aluminum enclosure with a three-way vented box. Its 25 mm diamond-dome tweeter, 130 mm Continuum FST midrange and twin 180 mm Aerofoil bass units represent a different engineering route to bandwidth and output. A ported alignment can interact more strongly with room boundaries than a sealed design, so placement and distance from rear walls deserve attention during an audition.
On the published figures, the 803 D4 has higher sensitivity and a less demanding nominal impedance than the A3. That does not make it an automatically easier load: the manufacturer also lists a 3-ohm minimum. A nominal 8-ohm label should not be treated as permission to use any amplifier without checking its current capability and protection behavior.
Who should audition it
- Listeners whose amplifier has comfortable headroom but may benefit from a higher-sensitivity design.
- Rooms where the larger cabinet and vented bass alignment can be positioned well away from corners and rear walls.
- Buyers who want a broad dealer network and are prepared to verify a substantial current price rather than rely on an old listing.
Price and practical checks
The US product page surfaced a price of $23,000 per pair. Treat that as a time- and market-sensitive figure: request a written quote, ask whether it includes the manufacturer’s bases or accessories, and confirm warranty terms in your country. The 62.15 kg cabinet and 1165 mm height also make delivery planning important; measure doors, stair turns and the final listening position before ordering.
Focal Sopra N°3: high sensitivity and larger bass drivers
Design and electrical profile
Focal’s Sopra N°3 is a three-way bass-reflex column using a 27 mm pure-beryllium inverted-dome tweeter, a 6.5-inch W-cone midrange and two 8.25-inch W-cone woofers. Its published sensitivity is the highest in this group, while the nominal impedance is 8 ohms. The specified minimum is still close to 3 ohms, so amplifier suitability must be assessed from the complete impedance profile rather than the nominal label alone.
Focal publishes a response of 33 Hz–40 kHz within ±3 dB and a 26 Hz point at −6 dB. Those two statements describe different tolerances; do not compare the −6 dB figure directly with another manufacturer’s ±3 dB bandwidth. The bass-reflex enclosure also means that port interaction, boundary distance and room modes will influence what you hear.

Wilson Audio Sasha V: a demanding high-end audition
What the published guide tells you
Wilson Audio’s installation and care guide lists a 20 Hz–32 kHz room-average response within ±3 dB and a 4-ohm nominal impedance. It also identifies a 2.36-ohm minimum at 82 Hz. That minimum is the lowest stated load among the speakers in this comparison and should be treated as a central amplifier-selection issue.
System matching and logistics
Before arranging a Sasha V audition, ask the dealer to demonstrate it with an amplifier that remains stable into low impedances. Have the dealer explain the speaker’s adjustment and installation procedure, because Wilson’s modular high-end designs are intended to be set up carefully rather than simply unpacked and placed at random. The cited guide does not provide a comparable price, complete dimensional specification or recommended wattage range; confirm those details locally before making a purchase decision.
Why include it on a shortlist
The Sasha V belongs on a shortlist when the budget, room and support network justify a specialist installation. It is not a drop-in substitute for the A3. Its stated impedance minimum, room-average response convention and installation requirements make a direct specification ranking inappropriate; an in-room demonstration is essential.
How to compare these speakers without over-reading the numbers
1. Start with cabinet alignment and room placement
The A3 is sealed, while the 803 D4 and Sopra N°3 are vented or bass-reflex designs. Ported speakers can produce strong low-frequency output but may excite boundary-related peaks if placed too close to a wall or corner. A sealed speaker may offer a different low-frequency roll-off and integration behavior. Neither alignment is universally better. Mark several possible positions on the floor, keep left and right distances symmetrical, and listen at each position before deciding that a speaker is inherently too bass-heavy or too lean.

Sensitivity indicates how much acoustic output a speaker can produce from a given electrical input under the manufacturer’s stated conditions. Impedance indicates the electrical load, but a nominal value is only a summary. The Bowers & Wilkins and Focal models both publish minimums near 3 ohms; the Wilson guide gives a 2.36-ohm minimum. Check your amplifier’s continuous power rating, current delivery, minimum-load specification and protection history. A high wattage number alone does not guarantee stability.

3. Match the amplifier to listening distance and level
Estimate the listening distance, desired peak level and room size before choosing an amplifier. A nearfield listener in a small room has different demands from someone sitting several metres away in a large, absorptive room. Ask the dealer to use the amplifier you own, or the exact model you plan to buy, and to demonstrate realistic listening levels rather than only short, loud bursts. Listen for compression, hardening of vocals, bass loss or protection shutdown; those are reasons to reassess the amplifier-speaker pairing.
4. Treat response figures as descriptions, not rankings
Frequency-response ranges use different tolerances and measurement conventions here. Focal and Bowers & Wilkins specify ±3 dB conditions, while Wilson reports a room-average response. The A3’s published range comes from its launch specification. These figures help identify design intent and potential bandwidth, but they cannot establish tonal preference, imaging, distortion or dynamics in your room.
5. Account for footprint, floor loading and access
All four options are substantial floorstanding speakers. Compare cabinet width and depth with your listening-room plan, not only the front-panel appearance. Check floor loading on suspended floors, measure lift and stair access, and reserve space for unpacking. Ask the dealer whether delivery requires two technicians, special dollies or a manufacturer-approved setup procedure.

A practical audition procedure
- Prepare familiar recordings. Choose tracks with unprocessed vocals, acoustic instruments, dense bass and wide stereo ambience. Use the same files, source component and volume reference for every model.
- Set levels carefully. Small loudness differences can make one speaker seem more detailed or dynamic. Ask the dealer to match levels as closely as practical and note the setting used.
- Check bass at several seats. Walk around the room while a sustained bass line plays. Large changes between seats usually indicate room modes or placement issues, not simply a “better” or “worse” speaker.
- Evaluate voices and timing. Listen for stable vocal image, consonant clarity and whether the center image remains locked when you move slightly left or right.
- Use realistic duration. Spend at least 20–30 minutes with each serious candidate. Fatigue, treble glare or bass overhang may not appear during a two-minute demonstration.
- Repeat with your electronics. If possible, bring your amplifier and source, or ask for the dealer’s closest equivalent. Recheck at quiet, moderate and high—but safe—levels.
- Document setup variables. Record toe-in, distance from walls, listening distance, amplifier model and any room treatment. Without these notes, a later comparison can become memory-driven rather than useful.
Price, warranty and availability checks
Do not use the A3’s historical launch MSRP or a surfaced web price as a current market ranking. Request dated written quotes for the exact finish and region. Confirm whether taxes, freight, bases, spikes, installation and room setup are included. Ask how warranty claims are handled if the dealer is in another country, and whether replacement drivers or crossover service are locally supported.
For discontinued, demo or used examples, obtain the serial number, proof of purchase and a condition report. Check cabinet edges, driver diaphragms, binding posts, grilles and any proprietary adjustment hardware. A lower purchase price can be offset by freight, insurance, specialist setup or unavailable parts.
Which speaker should you audition first?
- Choose the Magico A3 shortlist position if you value a sealed, rigid aluminum cabinet and your amplifier is comfortable with a 4-ohm load. Verify whether the model is still supported and what current examples cost.
- Start with the 803 D4 if you want a vented design, higher stated sensitivity and a nominal 8-ohm label, while accepting that its minimum load still reaches 3 ohms.
- Start with the Sopra N°3 if room size and amplifier headroom make its larger bass drivers and higher stated sensitivity attractive, and you can manage a deep, heavy cabinet.
- Arrange a Sasha V demonstration if you are prepared for specialist installation and an amplifier capable of handling its stated 2.36-ohm minimum. Treat it as a system project, not a casual replacement.
Questions to answer before ordering
Will the speaker fit the room? Sketch the listening position, side-wall clearance and rear-wall distance to scale. The 803 D4 is 1165 mm tall, the Sopra N°3 is 1264 mm tall, and both are more than 350 mm wide or deep in at least one dimension. The A3’s 44 × 11 × 9.25-inch footprint may be easier to accommodate, but its 110-pound weight still requires a safe route from delivery point to listening room.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Does the amplifier have enough real headroom? Compare continuous output into 8, 4 and, where published, lower loads. The A3 is specified at 50–300 W RMS, the 803 D4 at 50–500 W, and the Sopra N°3 at 40–400 W. These ranges are manufacturer guidance, not a guarantee that every amplifier at the top of the range is suitable. A dealer should confirm stability with the speaker connected, particularly for the 3-ohm and 2.36-ohm minima.
What is included in the quoted price? Ask for the exact finish, pair price, delivery, unpacking, bases or spikes, installation and tax in writing. The 803 D4 page surfaced $23,000 per pair in the United States, while the A3’s $9,800 figure dates to its 2017 launch. No current figure is established here for the Sopra N°3 or Sasha V, so a local quote is essential.
Can you live with the setup? A speaker that sounds impressive for five minutes may be unsuitable if it requires moving furniture every time you listen. Ask the dealer to mark the recommended position, explain toe-in and provide written setup notes. For Wilson’s modular design, confirm who performs final adjustment and what happens if you move house.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common pitfalls
- Comparing bandwidth without tolerance. A 26 Hz −6 dB point is not equivalent to a 22 Hz or 19 Hz range stated under another tolerance.
- Assuming nominal impedance is the whole load. Minimum impedance and the frequency at which it occurs matter to the amplifier.
- Using price as a sound-quality scale. Launch MSRP, current retail price and used-market cost describe different transactions.
- Ignoring room modes. A bass peak at one seat can disappear a metre away; reposition the speaker and listener before rejecting a design.
- Underestimating delivery. Heavy cabinets, stairs, narrow doors and suspended floors can add cost and risk.
- Auditioning with unfamiliar electronics. A dealer’s amplifier may flatter or constrain a speaker. Repeat the test with your own equipment whenever possible.
A concise decision path
- Eliminate models that cannot fit through the delivery route or sit safely in the room.
- Eliminate amplifier combinations that are not rated for the speaker’s likely low-impedance demand.
- Request current written quotes, including freight, installation and warranty support.
- Audition at matched levels with familiar music and several seating positions.
- Repeat the finalist demonstration after the speakers have been positioned as they will be at home.
The most defensible shortlist is the one that can be demonstrated in your room, with your amplifier, at a verified price and with service available where you live. Specifications narrow the field; they do not substitute for that audition.

Is the Magico A3 price still $9,800 per pair?
$9,800 per pair was Magico’s original US suggested retail price announced in December 2017. Treat it as historical. Confirm current new, demo or used pricing, availability and warranty status with a local dealer.
How much amplifier power do these speakers need?
Magico lists 50–300 W RMS for the A3, Bowers & Wilkins lists 50–500 W for the 803 D4, and Focal lists 40–400 W for the Sopra N°3. Wilson’s cited guide does not provide a comparable wattage range. The amplifier must also remain stable into the speaker’s minimum impedance.
Are the 803 D4 and Sopra N°3 direct replacements for the A3?
No. The 803 D4 and Sopra N°3 use vented or bass-reflex cabinets, while the A3 uses a sealed cabinet. Their drivers, response conventions, sensitivity and impedance behavior differ, so audition them as alternative system choices rather than expected sonic matches.
What should I check when buying a used or demo pair?
Request the serial number, proof of purchase, condition report and warranty details. Inspect cabinet edges, driver diaphragms, binding posts, grilles and proprietary setup hardware. Add freight, insurance, installation and possible parts or service costs to the purchase price.
Do I need professional installation?
Professional delivery is prudent for these heavy towers, especially on stairs or through narrow access points. The Wilson Sasha V deserves particular attention because its modular design and adjustment procedure call for careful dealer setup. Ask what delivery and final positioning include.
The Bottom Line
The A3 remains an appealing reference point for a sealed, rigid 4-ohm tower, but the 803 D4, Sopra N°3 and Sasha V broaden the choice rather than duplicate it. Choose by room, amplifier stability, physical logistics, current written pricing and a level-matched audition—not by response figures alone.
