What the two mice are designed to do
Magic Mouse USB-C: a gesture surface first
The current Magic Mouse is a very low-profile Bluetooth mouse with a Multi-Touch top. Apple specifically documents gestures such as swiping between web pages and scrolling through documents. The top behaves more like a small trackpad than a conventional scroll-wheel mouse: you move a finger across the surface rather than turning a wheel.
#1 Best Overall
- Magic Mouse is wireless and rechargeable, with an optimised foot design that lets it glide smoothly across your desk.
- The Multi-Touch surface allows you to perform simple gestures such as swiping between web pages and scrolling through documents.
- The rechargeable battery will power your Magic Mouse for about a month or more between charges.
- It’s ready to go straight out of the box and pairs automatically with your Mac, and it includes a woven USB-C Charge Cable that lets you pair and charge by connecting to a USB-C port on your Mac.
Pairing is designed to be simple on a Mac. Apple’s current specification identifies Bluetooth connectivity and automatic pairing with a Mac. That makes the Magic Mouse attractive when you want to connect it and begin working without configuring a receiver or installing another control application.
The USB-C version was introduced in 2024. Apple’s current specification lists dimensions of 2.16 × 5.71 × 11.35 cm and a weight of 99 g. Older Apple support material still describes a 2015 Magic Mouse with a Lightning connector; that is a different version and should not be confused with the current USB-C model.
MX Master 3S for Mac: a control-heavy productivity mouse
The MX Master 3S for Mac uses a larger contoured body and a conventional control layout. Logitech lists seven customizable buttons, a main scroll wheel, a thumb wheel and a gesture button. Its 8,000 DPI sensor, quiet clicks and MagSpeed wheel are designed for people who want dedicated controls instead of surface gestures.

The company says the contour positions the arm in a more natural posture, but that is a manufacturer design claim, not independent evidence that it will be more comfortable for every hand or work style.
Interaction: gestures or physical controls?
When the Magic Mouse’s surface makes sense
- You regularly swipe between browser pages or full-screen Mac spaces.
- You prefer a clean top with no visible wheel or button cluster.
- You already use trackpad-style gestures and do not want to learn a new control layout.
- You want basic operation without Logitech’s desktop software.
Multi-Touch is also useful when the direction and length of a scroll matter more than a fixed number of wheel clicks. You can move a finger continuously across the surface, although the exact feel is different from a physical wheel and is a matter of preference.

When the MX Master’s controls make sense
- You need a dedicated thumb wheel for sideways movement in wide spreadsheets, timelines or design canvases.
- You want physical forward and back buttons instead of a surface gesture.
- You use shortcuts often enough that seven assignable buttons can save repeated keyboard commands.
- You want a wheel that can move from tactile, line-by-line scrolling to rapid free-spin scrolling.
Logitech’s MagSpeed wheel supports ratchet and free-spin modes. Logitech advertises scrolling speeds of up to 1,000 lines per second; that is a company specification, not an independent benchmark.
Shape, size and hand fit
The Magic Mouse’s 2.16 cm listed height creates a distinctly low profile. It is 99 g, so it is also 42 g lighter than the MX Master 3S for Mac. That combination can suit a small desk, a travel setup or anyone who prefers a mouse that takes up little visual and physical space.
The MX Master 3S for Mac is taller, wider and heavier, with a pronounced contour. A larger body gives your palm and thumb more defined contact areas and places the extra controls within reach, but those same dimensions can feel excessive to someone who prefers fingertip control or has limited desk room. The specifications establish the physical differences; they do not establish a universal ergonomic winner.
If possible, compare the body shape in person or check the return policy before treating either design as an ergonomic solution. Hand size, grip style, desk height and the amount of wrist movement all change the result.
Scrolling and navigation in everyday work
Magic Mouse scrolling
Scrolling on the Magic Mouse is performed on its Multi-Touch surface. Apple documents scrolling through documents and swiping between web pages, so the basic navigation model is familiar to anyone who uses a Mac trackpad. There is no separate thumb wheel for horizontal movement; you use surface gestures instead.

MX Master scrolling
The MX Master 3S for Mac gives you three distinct navigation mechanisms: the main MagSpeed wheel, its ratchet or free-spin behavior, and the thumb wheel for horizontal scrolling. That arrangement is useful when a document mixes long vertical passages with wide tables or timelines. The wheel also gives tactile feedback in ratchet mode, which some users find easier to control for short movements.
Logitech Options+ can expose additional gesture behavior and button assignments. The hardware works as a mouse without those customizations, but the advertised Mac-specific shortcuts depend on installing the software.
Charging and battery trade-offs
Magic Mouse USB-C
Apple estimates “about a month or more” between charges for the current Magic Mouse USB-C. The box includes a USB-C charge cable, and the charging port is on the underside. Apple Support explicitly states that Magic Mouse is unavailable for use while charging. In practice, a depleted battery means turning the mouse over, connecting the cable and temporarily using another pointing device or the keyboard until charging is complete.
MX Master 3S for Mac
Logitech estimates up to 70 days from a full charge and says a one-minute charge can provide three hours of use. Those are manufacturer estimates and depend on usage and conditions. The mouse charges through USB-C. The Logitech pages reviewed for this comparison do not confirm whether the mouse can be operated while its cable is connected, so do not assume a wired fallback without checking the current manual.
The practical distinction is therefore not simply “which lasts longer.” Apple’s design makes charging an interruption because of the underside port and no-use-while-charging limitation, while Logitech emphasizes a long stated runtime and a quick-charge figure. Treat both numbers as planning guidance rather than guaranteed schedules.

Connectivity and switching between devices
The Magic Mouse uses Bluetooth and is intended to pair automatically with a Mac. That is straightforward for a single-Mac desk, especially when you want to avoid a USB receiver.
The MX Master 3S for Mac supports Bluetooth Low Energy and compatible Logi Bolt receiver connections. Logitech says it can connect to and switch among up to three devices. The receiver is not listed in the box contents in the technical specification, so a receiver-based setup may require obtaining one separately. Bluetooth is the simpler option when your Mac has working Bluetooth and you do not need the receiver.
Multi-computer Flow features are available through Logitech Options+. They are useful when the same mouse moves between computers, but they add software setup and permissions to the initial configuration.
What Logitech Options+ adds
Logitech’s setup documentation says the gesture button requires Logitech Options+ and that the Mac back/forward buttons also require Options+. Options+ can map buttons, enable gestures, create app-specific assignments and configure Flow across computers. It also provides settings for the MagSpeed wheel’s behavior.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →This creates a clear trade-off:
- Magic Mouse: fewer configuration decisions and a Mac-native gesture model.
- MX Master 3S for Mac: more potential shortcuts and per-application control, provided you install and maintain Logitech’s software.
If you use a managed work Mac where installing utilities is restricted, verify that policy before choosing the MX Master for its advanced features. Its basic pointer, clicking and scrolling functions do not depend on custom mappings, but the extra Mac behavior does.

- In Options+, choose the mouse and assign buttons for the applications you use. Test each assignment before relying on it in a work process.
Set up with a Logi Bolt receiver
- Obtain a compatible Logi Bolt receiver if you need receiver connectivity; Logitech’s specification does not list one in the box contents.
- Connect the receiver to the Mac, using an appropriate adapter or hub if your Mac lacks the required port.
- Use Logitech’s pairing process in Options+ to connect the mouse to the receiver.
- Reserve the remaining Easy-Switch slots for other computers if you plan to use the mouse across devices.

Price, stock and model-year cautions
At the time of the October 2026 review, Logitech’s US product page displayed a $119.99 list price for the MX Master 3S for Mac and marked it “Sold Out Temporarily.” Price and stock are volatile, so check the current product page before buying. No stable price is established here for the Magic Mouse USB-C.
“MX Master” is not a precise model name. The direct comparison in this article is with the MX Master 3S for Mac. Logitech documentation also describes an MX Master 4 for Business, including macOS 12 or later compatibility at release and a 70-day battery estimate. That documentation does not establish a current consumer version, a Mac-specific retail edition or a direct replacement for the 3S for Mac, so it should not be treated as one.
A practical decision checklist
- Choose your scrolling method. Pick surface gestures if you think in trackpad swipes; pick a wheel and thumb wheel if you want tactile vertical and horizontal control.
- Decide whether you will install software. The MX Master’s advanced Mac mappings require Logitech Options+. If software installation is undesirable or restricted, its customization advantage is reduced.
- Check the charging interruption you can tolerate. The Magic Mouse cannot be used while charging. Logitech’s quick-charge claim is useful, but the reviewed documents do not confirm wired operation during charging.
- Measure your workspace and consider your grip. The Magic Mouse is 99 g and low profile; the MX Master is 141 g with a much larger contoured body. Those facts describe fit possibilities, not guaranteed comfort.
- Count your devices. A single Mac favors the simpler Bluetooth path. Multiple computers favor the MX Master’s three-device switching and optional Flow features.
- Verify the exact listing. Confirm that the product says “Magic Mouse USB-C” or “MX Master 3S for Mac,” and recheck current price, stock and included accessories.
Limitations behind the comparison
The figures in this article come from Apple and Logitech documentation. There is no independent comparative study here measuring comfort, pointer accuracy, battery runtime, click durability or productivity across a population of Mac users. Logitech’s natural-posture language, 8,000 DPI figure, 1,000-lines-per-second scrolling claim and battery estimates should therefore be read as specifications or marketing claims, not laboratory comparisons.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThat evidence is still enough for a practical purchase decision because the main differences are visible and operational: Multi-Touch versus physical controls, low profile versus contoured body, one Mac versus up to three devices, and simple pairing versus software-enabled customization.
Verdict
Buy the Magic Mouse USB-C when the appeal is a slim 99 g design, automatic Mac pairing and trackpad-style swipes and scrolling. Buy the Logitech MX Master 3S for Mac when you will use its thumb wheel, physical navigation buttons, seven customizable controls, adaptive scrolling and multi-device switching. The right answer is the interaction model you will use every day, not a blanket claim that one shape or battery estimate suits every Mac user.
