Check compatibility before comparing features
Keyboard cases are cut to a particular chassis. “iPad Air” is not enough information to select one: you also need the screen-size class, generation or chip family, and the model number shown in iPadOS or on the packaging.

Magic Keyboard compatibility in the cited Apple listings
Apple’s current US pages list an 11-inch Magic Keyboard version for iPad Air models identified as M2, M3 and M4, as well as the fourth- and fifth-generation iPad Air. The cited 13-inch listing covers M2, M3 and M4 iPad Air models. Apple also specifies iPadOS 18.3 or later for the current product pages.
Combo Touch compatibility in the cited Logitech listings
Logitech lists 11-inch and 13-inch versions for iPad Air models identified as M2, M3 and M4, and lists iPad Air fifth generation among the supported devices. The 11-inch and 13-inch cases are separate products; a case that fits one size cannot be assumed to fit the other.
How to verify your iPad
- Open Settings > General > About and note the model name and model number.
- Confirm whether your display belongs to the 11-inch or 13-inch case family. Do not use a seller’s generic “iPad Air” title as the only check.
- Match the generation or chip designation against the manufacturer’s compatibility list for the exact keyboard SKU.
- Check the return policy before opening the package, particularly when a marketplace listing combines several sizes in one product page.
Compatibility should decide the purchase before hinge preference or price. Similar-looking iPad Air generations can have different camera, magnet or dimension layouts.
Choose the hinge and tablet modes you actually use
Magic Keyboard: a floating cantilever workstation
The Magic Keyboard suspends the iPad above the keyboard in a floating cantilever arrangement. The hinge offers multiple viewing angles and folds into a case that protects the front and back of the tablet. This is a single-piece typing setup: open it for a laptop-like position, adjust the angle, and close it when carrying the iPad.
The cantilever approach avoids a separate leg behind the tablet. That can matter when a tray, desk or lap has limited depth. It also keeps the screen visually elevated above the keys. The cited material does not establish a measured stability or comfort advantage, so treat the hinge layout as a mode and space preference rather than proof of superior ergonomics.

Combo Touch: case-first flexibility
Combo Touch uses a formfitting protective case with a flexible kickstand and a keyboard that detaches. You can leave the case on when reading, sketching, browsing with touch or watching video, then attach the keyboard when you need to type. The tablet therefore has a keyboard-on mode and a genuine keyboard-off mode without removing its protective shell.
The rear stand has a practical trade-off. It supports adjustable viewing angles, but it extends behind the iPad. In a Tom’s Guide hands-on comparison, one reviewer found that footprint awkward on an airplane because the stand consumed space behind the tablet. That is one reviewer’s qualitative observation, not a controlled measurement or a universal result; check the depth of your usual tray table or narrow desk if cramped seating is common.

- Select Magic Keyboard if you normally type with the iPad and only occasionally close the case. Its published design centers on an integrated floating keyboard.
- Select Combo Touch if you frequently remove the keyboard for handwriting, reading or video while keeping the iPad protected.
- For airplanes, small café tables or shallow lap trays, compare the physical space behind the tablet, not only the screen angle.
- For a desk where you want the screen elevated and the keyboard always ready, either design can work; the deciding factor is whether you want the rear stand or cantilever hinge.
Keyboard and trackpad differences
What Apple specifies for Magic Keyboard
Apple lists a large glass trackpad, scissor keys with 1 mm of travel and a 14-key function row. The function row gives dedicated controls for common system actions instead of requiring a modifier-key combination for every shortcut. The glass surface is a specific construction claim from Apple; it is not evidence of a measured tracking or durability advantage over the Logitech trackpad.
The 1 mm figure describes key travel, not typing speed, noise, force or comfort. Those qualities depend on the user, software and posture. No controlled side-by-side typing test was established for these products, so do not treat the specification as a performance ranking.
What Logitech and Apple list for Combo Touch
Logitech describes a backlit keyboard and precise trackpad. The Apple Store listing calls it full-size and backlit and describes adjustable scissor keys. Backlighting can help in dim rooms, while the detachable design lets you use the iPad without carrying the keyboard as part of the working surface.

- Sleek 7-in-1 USB-C Hub: Features an HDMI port, two USB-A 3.0 ports, and a USB-C data port, each providing 5Gbps transfer speeds. It also includes a USB-C PD input port for charging up to 100W and dual SD and TF card slots, all in a compact design.
- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
The available specifications do not provide a directly comparable key-travel number, measured actuation force, latency test or typing-speed result for Combo Touch. It is therefore reasonable to compare the published layouts and modes, but not to claim that one is objectively faster or more comfortable.

The Magic Keyboard’s 14-key row is the clearer fit if brightness, media, volume or other system controls are part of your daily workflow. Combo Touch’s cited description emphasizes backlighting, adjustable scissor keys and a full-size trackpad rather than a matching function-row specification. If a particular shortcut matters, inspect the keyboard layout for your exact regional SKU before purchase.
Charging, ports and daily connections
Magic Keyboard pass-through charging
Apple’s keyboard has its own USB-C connector. It can charge the iPad Air through the keyboard while leaving the iPad’s built-in USB-C port free for another accessory, such as a drive, display adapter or audio interface. This is the most concrete functional distinction when you regularly need wired accessories and charging at the same time.
Pass-through charging does not mean the keyboard adds a second general-purpose data port. The cited Apple material establishes charging pass-through; it does not establish data I/O through that connector. Plan accessory connections through the iPad’s own port.
Combo Touch connection
Apple’s store listing identifies Smart Connector connectivity for the Combo Touch listing. That connector supplies the keyboard connection without a separate keyboard battery or charging cable being identified in the cited material. The available listing does not establish that Combo Touch’s connector provides additional data ports, so do not buy it expecting a hub.

Decision rule for port-heavy work
If you charge while attaching a USB-C accessory, Magic Keyboard’s dedicated charging connector is a concrete reason to favor it. If your accessories are wireless or you usually remove the keyboard before using the iPad’s port, the detachable design may matter more than pass-through charging.
Protection, Pencil storage and carrying
Protection with Magic Keyboard
Apple describes the Magic Keyboard as folding into a case that protects the front and back of the iPad Air. Its protection is integrated with the cantilever keyboard, so the tablet and keyboard travel as one unit. The cited page does not identify a Pencil storage compartment.
Protection with Combo Touch
Combo Touch is a formfitting protective case, and its keyboard can be removed without removing that case. Apple’s listing says it provides space to store Apple Pencil while the case stays on. This is useful if the Pencil normally travels with the tablet and you do not want a separate sleeve or loose accessory.
The source does not specify which Apple Pencil model is supported beyond the product’s stated iPad compatibility. Confirm Pencil compatibility for your iPad Air and the exact case revision rather than assuming every Pencil generation fits the holder.
Carry considerations
Magic Keyboard folds into a closed keyboard case with no separate detachable panel to misplace. Combo Touch gives you more modes but creates two components when the keyboard is removed. The 13-inch Combo Touch listing records a weight of 685.9 g and dimensions of 28.5 × 22.58 × 1.51 cm; those figures apply to that listed 13-inch version and should not be generalized to the 11-inch model. The same listing states a one-year limited hardware warranty.

- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.

Neither product’s cited material supplies a directly comparable weight, thickness, drop rating or long-term durability result for every size. If bag weight is critical, compare the exact 11-inch or 13-inch SKU specifications rather than extrapolating from the 13-inch Combo Touch figures.

At the research date, Apple’s US listings showed $269 for the 11-inch Magic Keyboard and $319 for the 13-inch version. Logitech’s official page showed a $199.99–$229.99 range, while an Apple Store listing showed $229.95 for a 13-inch Combo Touch variant. These are observed listing prices, not permanent MSRP guarantees; seller, size, promotions and time can change the amount.
| Product and size context | Observed US listing price | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Magic Keyboard, 11-inch | $269 | Apple listing observed around October 13, 2026. |
| Magic Keyboard, 13-inch | $319 | Apple listing observed around October 13, 2026. |
| Combo Touch, Logitech page | $199.99–$229.99 | Range shown on Logitech’s US page; the upper end corresponded to its 13-inch tier in the cited listing. |
| Combo Touch, 13-inch Apple Store listing | $229.95 | Apple Store listing price for the listed 13-inch variant; seller-specific. |
Do not compare the lowest number in the Logitech range with every Magic Keyboard SKU as if they were identical sizes. Match 11-inch with 11-inch and 13-inch with 13-inch, then account for the features you would otherwise buy separately, such as a Pencil holder or protective case.
Which one should you choose?
Choose Magic Keyboard when these are your priorities
- You want the floating cantilever appearance and a continuous hinge rather than a rear kickstand.
- You use the iPad as a primary typing device and prefer an integrated keyboard that does not detach.
- A glass trackpad, 1 mm scissor-key travel and a 14-key function row match the controls you want.
- You often charge while connecting a USB-C accessory and need the iPad’s own port available.
- You prefer a closed case that folds around the tablet without carrying a separate keyboard panel.
Choose Combo Touch when these are your priorities
- You want to remove the keyboard for reading, drawing, touch use or video while leaving the protective case attached.
- An adjustable kickstand is more useful to you than a floating cantilever hinge.
- You want a backlit keyboard and the listing’s full-size trackpad and adjustable scissor keys.
- You carry Apple Pencil with the iPad and want storage built into the case.
- You prefer the observed Logitech price range, provided the exact size and seller listing fit your iPad.
When neither feature settles the decision
If you rarely type, paying for either integrated keyboard may be difficult to justify compared with a case and separate keyboard, but the cited material does not provide a full alternative-product comparison. If you type all day and need a particular desktop shortcut, test the regional layout or buy from a seller with a practical return policy; published specifications cannot predict your personal comfort.
A practical buying checklist
- Identify the iPad. Record the model name, model number and screen-size class in Settings > General > About.
- Select the exact case size. Do not substitute an 11-inch case for a 13-inch model or vice versa.
- Check generation support. For Magic Keyboard, compare your device with Apple’s listed M2, M3, M4 and fourth- or fifth-generation entries for the relevant size. For Combo Touch, compare against Logitech’s listed M2, M3, M4 and fifth-generation entries.
- Update the operating system. Apple’s current Magic Keyboard listing requires iPadOS 18.3 or later.
- Decide whether keyboard removal is essential. If yes, Combo Touch is the clearer match because its keyboard detaches while the case remains.
- Measure your workspace. Allow room behind the iPad for Combo Touch’s kickstand, especially on airplane trays and shallow desks.
- Plan charging and accessories. Choose Magic Keyboard if pass-through charging while using the iPad USB-C port is a regular requirement.
- Account for Pencil storage. Choose the case that includes the storage arrangement you need, and verify the Pencil model separately.
- Recheck price and warranty. Confirm the seller, current amount, return terms and the one-year limited hardware warranty stated for the listed 13-inch Combo Touch.
What the available evidence does not establish
Specifications explain how these cases are designed, but they do not settle every ownership question. No controlled side-by-side test was established for typing speed, key feel, trackpad latency, durability, connection reliability, battery behavior, hinge longevity or long-term comfort. Vendor descriptions should therefore be read as feature claims, not independent performance measurements.
The cited prices and compatibility lists were current observations around October 13, 2026. Retail pages can change by region, seller and promotion. The 685.9 g weight and 28.5 × 22.58 × 1.51 cm dimensions apply to the listed 13-inch Combo Touch, not automatically to its 11-inch counterpart. Verify live details at checkout.
Bottom-line decision
For a mostly laptop-style iPad Air with frequent wired accessories, the Magic Keyboard’s cantilever hinge, glass trackpad, 14-key row and USB-C charging pass-through make the strongest case. For an iPad that alternates between typing and tablet use, Combo Touch’s detachable keyboard, protective case, kickstand and Pencil storage are more useful. Start with exact compatibility, then choose the mode you will use every day; the feature list does not support declaring one a universal winner.
