Starting with Nauctis: The Sunken Realm, Magic’s first set of 2027, Wizards of the Coast will rename Play Boosters as Booster Packs and revise the contents of both Booster Packs and Collector Boosters. The changes add rare God Packs, change foil contents and introduce traditional foil Japan Showcase cards to Booster Packs. Wizards says prices will not increase as a result.
What changes in Magic booster packs?
Wizards announced the changes on October 5, 2026. They begin with Nauctis: The Sunken Realm and continue with Magic Multiverse sets. Universes Beyond sets are expected to adopt the changes in 2028. The announcement is available from Wizards of the Coast.

Booster Packs replace Play Boosters
Play Boosters will simply be called Booster Packs. Wizards says the new name reflects the product, rather than a change in its role as the standard pack.

Why is Wizards changing the packs?
Wizards says it wants openings to feel more exciting and meaningful. It also says removing lower-rarity cards creates printing capacity for God Packs and Japan Showcase cards in Booster Packs. Those are the publisher’s stated reasons; the announcement does not independently measure how players will respond.
