What changed with the Xbox Series X|S edition?
This is a separate current-generation edition of Mafia III: Definitive Edition, rather than a setting that unlocks inside the old Xbox One build. 2K announced availability for Xbox Series X|S on October 8, 2026, with advertised 60 FPS gameplay, improved loading times and fixes for several legacy issues.

The offer covers owners of Mafia III: Definitive Edition, Mafia: Trilogy and Mafia: The Omerta Collection, subject to the ownership and platform conditions in 2K’s instructions. The Xbox-specific free-upgrade guidance is aimed at digital Xbox One purchases made before October 8. Purchases made on or after that date are described as already including the cross-generation edition.

“Cross-generation” matters because the entitlement is tied to the qualifying Xbox purchase, while the Series X|S release is a distinct edition with its own installation and performance claims. The upgrade is therefore not simply an automatic frame-rate toggle for the Xbox One version. Check which product your account owns before choosing a Store listing.

Is the Mafia III Xbox upgrade free?
For qualifying digital owners, yes. The exact route depends on which product is attached to your Microsoft account.
| What you own | Purchase timing | Where to look | What 2K says |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mafia: Trilogy or Mafia: The Omerta Collection (digital Xbox One) | Purchased before October 8, 2026 | Your Xbox game library | The free Series X|S edition should be available from the library listing. |
| Standalone Mafia III: Definitive Edition (digital Xbox One) | Purchased before October 8, 2026 | Search the Xbox Store for the free Series X|S version | 2K directs standalone owners to the Store rather than only the library page. |
| Any qualifying digital edition purchased on or after October 8, 2026 | October 8, 2026 or later | Your library and installed-game listings | 2K says the purchase already includes the cross-generation edition. |
| Xbox disc copy | Varies | Microsoft’s current disc-to-digital licensing guidance | 2K points disc owners to Xbox’s licensing instructions; the exact eligibility requirements are not specified in the accessible 2K article. |
“Free” refers to the entitlement for an eligible owner; it does not mean every Xbox disc automatically qualifies. A disc license may depend on Microsoft’s current licensing rules, so check the live Xbox instructions before assuming that a particular disc can claim the digital Series X|S edition.
There is no separate upgrade price listed for an eligible digital owner in 2K’s instructions. If a Store page displays a charge, do not assume that paying is necessary: first verify the Microsoft account, the exact edition and whether the purchase was made before or after October 8.

Digital Trilogy or Omerta owners
- Sign in on the Xbox console with the Microsoft account that owns the digital copy.
- Open My games & apps, then the full game library.
- Locate Mafia: Trilogy or Mafia: The Omerta Collection and check the available editions or install options.
- Select the Series X|S edition and begin the download if the free entitlement is shown.
Digital standalone Definitive Edition owners
- Use the account that purchased Mafia III: Definitive Edition.
- Open the Xbox Store and search for the Mafia III: Definitive Edition Series X|S release.
- Choose the listing identified as the Series X|S version.
- Confirm that the price is free before starting the installation.
Owners who bought after October 8
2K says these purchases already include the cross-generation edition. Check the game’s library entry for the Series X|S install option rather than looking for a separate upgrade charge.
Disc owners
2K does not publish a standalone disc-upgrade promise in the accessible article. Instead, it sends Xbox disc owners to Microsoft’s disc-to-digital licensing instructions. Because those requirements can change, use the current Xbox guidance for the console, region and disc edition you own. Do not treat ownership of any physical copy as automatic proof of eligibility.
The disc route is the one area where 2K’s article deliberately leaves the detailed decision to Xbox. If the current Microsoft instructions do not recognize your disc, the 2K article does not establish a free Series X|S entitlement for that copy.

Can I transfer my Xbox One save to Xbox Series X|S?
No. 2K’s upgrade guidance says Xbox One save files cannot be moved to the Series X|S edition. A separate official 2K support response dated October 8, 2026, also states that save files and achievements will not transfer from the old console edition to the new one.
That means the current-generation release should be treated as a fresh start. Before installing it, make sure you understand that existing story progress, completed activities and other save-dependent state will not reappear in the new edition. The restriction applies to the edition change; it is not a claim that your original Xbox One installation has been erased.
Do not confuse ownership continuity with save continuity. The same Microsoft account can be entitled to both editions, yet the old campaign state still will not populate the Series X|S build. If finishing an existing playthrough is more important than the newer performance target, keep using the Xbox One edition for that campaign.
Do achievements carry over?
No. Achievement progress from the Xbox One edition does not transfer to the Series X|S edition. A player moving to the new build should expect to earn its achievements independently, even when the same Xbox account owns both versions.
2K’s October 8 support response groups achievements with save files as non-transferable. Plan accordingly if you are close to completing the original achievement list: switching editions will not preserve that progress in the new release.
Does Mafia III run at 60 FPS on Series X|S?
2K advertises 60 FPS gameplay for the Xbox Series X|S edition. The statement is a publisher specification, not an independent frame-rate test. The same upgrade article also promises improved loading times and says several older issues have been fixed, but it does not provide a test methodology, minimum frame rate or detailed breakdown of which fixes apply in every situation.

| Edition | Frame-rate statement | Resolution statement | Loading statement | Source context |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Xbox Series X|S edition, released October 8, 2026 | 60 FPS gameplay advertised | Not stated in 2K’s accessible upgrade article | Improved loading times advertised | 2K’s 2026 upgrade announcement |
| Xbox One X version | Consistent 30 FPS described | Full 4K described | Not stated in the cited interview | Hangar 13 executive producer Andy Wilson, Xbox Wire interview, November 16, 2017 |
The 60 FPS wording does not by itself establish a locked frame rate in every scene, nor does it specify separate targets for Series X and Series S. Those details are not included in the cited 2K announcement. The safe comparison is simply that 2K advertises 60 FPS for the new edition, while the older Xbox One X description cited a consistent 30 FPS.
Does the new version run at 4K?
There is no confirmed resolution figure in the accessible 2K article for the Series X|S edition. You should not describe it as 4K on the basis of the older Xbox One X specification.
In a November 16, 2017 Xbox Wire interview, Hangar 13 executive producer Andy Wilson described the Xbox One X version as receiving a full 4K upgrade, HDR and graphical improvements while maintaining a consistent 30 FPS. Those details belong to the Xbox One X release. They do not establish the output resolution of the 2026 Series X|S build.

Can I play Mafia III offline?
2K’s Mafia III: FAQ, updated July 8, 2026, says the game can be played without an online connection and recommends downloading available patches. That offline-play answer concerns running the game after installation.
Claiming the Series X|S entitlement is a different step: the instructions use the Xbox library or Store, so the console normally needs access to Xbox’s online services to verify ownership and download the edition. Download patches while connected if you want the fixes referenced by 2K, then use the installed game offline where supported.

What should I do if the upgrade does not appear?
- Check the product type. Trilogy and Omerta owners are directed to the library, while standalone Definitive Edition owners are directed to search the Xbox Store.
- Check the purchase date. The free-upgrade instructions specifically describe eligible digital Xbox One purchases made before October 8, 2026. Later purchases are supposed to include the cross-generation entitlement already.
- Use the purchasing account. The entitlement is associated with the account that owns the digital purchase; browsing from a different account can show a paid listing instead.
- Verify the edition name. Search for the Series X|S version rather than selecting the older Xbox One listing.
- For a disc, stop before buying a second copy. 2K directs physical owners to Microsoft’s current disc-to-digital licensing rules, and the accessible 2K article does not verify every disc scenario.
- Check the listing price. A qualifying digital upgrade should be shown as free. If the Store displays a charge, recheck the account, edition and purchase date before proceeding.
If those checks do not resolve the listing, consult the current Xbox licensing guidance and 2K support. Exact disc eligibility and any Store behavior changes after the October 8 launch are not established by the published upgrade article.
Should you switch editions?
The Series X|S edition is most attractive if smoother 60 FPS gameplay, shorter loading and the current-generation fixes matter more to you than preserving existing progress. The cost of moving is practical rather than monetary for eligible owners: you must begin without the Xbox One save and earn achievements again.
Keep the Xbox One installation if continuing an existing campaign without interruption is your priority. Install the Series X|S edition when you are willing to restart for the newer performance target. The two decisions are independent: owning the upgrade does not migrate your old save, and keeping the old build does not grant the newer edition’s advertised performance features.
For a new buyer, the key question is which product listing is being purchased and whether it says the cross-generation edition is included. For an existing digital owner, the key question is where 2K says to claim it. For a disc owner, the key question is whether Microsoft’s current licensing process recognizes that physical license.
