Neither listing publishes a resolution target, frame-time measurements, or a console-by-console benchmark, so there is no evidence-based technical winner between Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5. The editions include the main game, its story expansions and bonus packs on both platforms, with differences mainly in how each storefront documents compatibility and features.
What the official listings actually confirm
The Xbox Store lists Mafia III: Definitive Edition as optimized for Xbox Series X|S. Its description advertises 60 FPS gameplay and technical improvements, and its capability information includes HDR10, single-player support and “60 fps+.” The PlayStation Store lists the edition for PS5 and PS4 and likewise advertises 60 FPS gameplay and technical improvements.

Those are publisher storefront claims, not independent measurements. They establish the feature being offered, but they do not prove that every scene holds a perfect 60 frames per second, that frame pacing is identical on every console, or that the two versions use the same resolution. The listings also do not explain what “technical improvements” specifically change.

Does Mafia III run at 60 FPS on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S?
Both storefronts say that it does. That is the strongest confirmed answer available from the official product pages. The wording does not say “locked 60 FPS,” does not identify a minimum frame rate and does not provide frame-time graphs or a test method.

Why “60 FPS gameplay” is not the same as a locked 60 FPS test
A 60 FPS target describes the intended presentation or supported mode. A measured result would need to record the game during demanding sequences and show whether frame delivery remains close to 16.67 milliseconds per frame. Drops, uneven frame pacing or brief traversal hitches could exist without contradicting a general store claim. No official console-by-console measurements for Series X, Series S or PS5 are supplied here.
What a trustworthy comparison would need to measure
- The exact game build and edition installed on each console.
- Separate tests on Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S and PS5 rather than treating “Xbox Series X|S” as one specification.
- The output resolution or rendering resolution, measured with a repeatable method.
- Frame-rate readings and frame-time plots in busy city scenes, driving, combat and cutscenes.
- The same display settings, patches and visual mode on every platform.
Without that information, calling one console smoother or declaring a winner would go beyond the available evidence.
Resolution and visual upgrades: what is known and unknown
Neither official listing states a Mafia III resolution number. Do not treat a console’s maximum output capability as the game’s rendering resolution. Microsoft’s general backward-compatibility guidance says that most Xbox One games work on Series X|S and that selected titles can render at up to 4K, but that platform-wide statement is not a Mafia III specification. It cannot fill the missing game-specific figure.

The listings do not identify whether it refers to resolution, texture filtering, shadows, draw distance, loading, anti-aliasing, HDR implementation or another change. You may notice differences on your own display, but the official descriptions alone do not let you attribute a particular visual upgrade to either version.
How to check your own output without mislabeling it as the game’s resolution
- Confirm the console is running the current Mafia III: Definitive Edition listing, not an older separately installed version.
- Record the console model: Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S or PS5.
- Note the television or monitor’s input mode and HDR setting.
- Use the display’s information panel, if available, to record the signal it receives.
- Describe that result as the console’s output signal. Do not call it the game’s internal rendering resolution unless a technical test establishes that.
Included game, DLC and bonus content
The Definitive Edition listings describe the main Mafia III campaign together with the story expansions Faster, Baby!, Stones Unturned and Sign of the Times. Bonus packs are also listed. Both platform descriptions present the package as including the core game and story content rather than selling the expansions as an automatically separate purchase.
Store catalogs can contain multiple SKUs, bundles and regional variants. Before paying, open the exact product page and expand the edition or included-content section. Check that the title says Definitive Edition and that the DLC names appear in the package description. This is especially important if your library already contains an older release.

What the listings do not establish about DLC
- They do not provide a universal rule for transferring DLC ownership from every older SKU.
- They do not resolve every save-transfer scenario between previous-generation and current-generation installations.
- They do not guarantee that a purchase made in one platform ecosystem grants a license in the other.
Licenses are tied to the platform account and store listing in which they were purchased. If you already own the game, inspect the item in your Xbox or PlayStation library first and look for an install or upgrade option before buying another copy.

Xbox Series X|S edition: platform-specific information
The Xbox Store identifies the game as optimized for Xbox Series X|S and lists an Xbox One game in the bundle. Its capability labels name HDR10, single-player and 60 fps+, while the description advertises 60 FPS gameplay and technical improvements.
Series X and Series S are not interchangeable test results
“Xbox Series X|S” covers two consoles with different hardware profiles. The storefront treats them as one optimized family, but it does not publish separate resolution or frame-rate figures. A result measured on Series X should not automatically be presented as a Series S result, and vice versa.
What HDR10 means for a buyer
HDR10 appearing in the Xbox capability list means the listing identifies HDR10 support as a capability. It does not state the game’s peak brightness, tone-mapping behavior or whether every scene uses HDR identically. Your television must also support HDR10, and the console’s HDR settings can affect the final image.
PlayStation 5 edition: platform-specific information
The PlayStation Store lists Mafia III: Definitive Edition for both PS5 and PS4 and advertises 60 FPS gameplay and technical improvements. The PS5 page also warns that some PS4 features may be absent on PS5, but it does not enumerate which features are affected.

Offline play, subscriptions and updates
According to 2K’s FAQ, you do not need PlayStation Plus or Xbox Game Pass Core, nor any online connection, to play the game straight out of the box. That statement addresses starting the game and playing its single-player content. It does not promise that every account-linked, store or update function works offline.
2K recommends connecting the console to the internet to download updates and patches. A practical first launch therefore looks like this:
- Install the edition from your disc or digital library.
- Connect to the internet and allow available game and system updates to finish.
- Launch the game once while signed in to the purchasing platform account so the license can be validated if required.
- After installation and updates complete, test the single-player campaign offline if you need an offline setup.
Patch availability, account requirements and store policies can change, so check the current platform listing if you are installing from an older disc or a previously owned license.
Ownership and upgrade checks before you buy
The current listings do not resolve every prior-owner entitlement. Do not assume that owning a PS4 or Xbox One copy automatically produces the same current-generation license in every region and SKU.
If you already own the game digitally
- Open your Xbox or PlayStation library on the console you plan to use.
- Search for Mafia III: Definitive Edition, not only “Mafia III.”
- Open the product details and check whether the console offers Install, Download or an edition-specific upgrade at no additional charge.
- Verify that the DLC and bonus packs are shown under the same entitlement.
- Only then compare the purchase price of a new copy with the entitlement already attached to your account.
If you own a disc
Check the exact disc edition and regional compatibility before deleting an older installation. A disc-based license generally requires the disc to remain available for verification, even when the game files are installed on the console. The store page is the authoritative place to check the current SKU and any upgrade language.
If you are choosing a platform for the first time
Choose the ecosystem where you already own the console, accessories and account library unless a specific feature matters more to you. The official listings do not establish a decisive performance advantage, a resolution advantage or a content advantage for either platform.

Mistake: treating 60 FPS as a guaranteed lock
Fix: read it as an advertised gameplay feature. Until a test publishes frame-time data for the exact build and console, avoid promises about perfect stability.
Mistake: inferring resolution from the console’s maximum output
Fix: distinguish the display signal from internal rendering resolution. Neither store page provides the latter.
Mistake: assuming every “technical improvement” is documented

Mistake: interpreting the PS5 feature warning as a complete incompatibility list
Fix: treat it as a general notice. The page does not name the absent PS4 features, so do not guess which ones they are.
What an independent performance review should publish
If you are evaluating videos or articles beyond the store pages, look for methodology rather than a headline number. A useful report identifies the console model, game build, patch level and display mode; tests the same scenes on every platform; separates resolution from output signal; and shows frame-time behavior instead of quoting only an average.
- Hardware: PS5, Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S should be identified separately.
- Software: edition, patch and system software versions should be recorded.
- Scenes: demanding driving routes, combat, crowded areas and cutscenes should be included.
- Metrics: frame rate, frame pacing and resolution method should be explained.
- Settings: HDR, display mode and any selectable graphics options should match across tests.
No such independent benchmark is established by the official listings summarized here. Until one is available, the responsible verdict remains limited to the advertised features.

Both current-generation listings present Mafia III: Definitive Edition as a 60 FPS, technically improved version and include the same core story package: the main game, Faster, Baby!, Stones Unturned, Sign of the Times and bonus packs. Xbox explicitly lists HDR10, single-player and 60 fps+ capabilities and marks the game optimized for Series X|S. PlayStation lists the game for PS5 and PS4 and notes that some PS4 features may be absent on PS5.
Neither store states a resolution or supplies measured frame-rate stability. Pick the platform you already use, verify the exact Definitive Edition and ownership entitlement, and connect to the internet once to obtain updates. A stronger technical winner would require controlled testing that the available official documentation does not provide.
