Your result can fall outside every figure in the table. A player who moves directly through story missions may finish sooner than the main-story estimate, while someone who explores districts, pursues every collectible, experiments with stealth, and completes all available side content can take longer than the average completionist report. The three story expansions included with the Definitive Edition also add playable content beyond the base campaign, so a player who owns that edition should regard the estimates as a guide to the main game rather than a complete “everything included” runtime.

Does Mafia 3 have multiplayer?
The current Xbox listing for Mafia III: Definitive Edition labels the game Single player. The reviewed official and store information does not document cooperative missions, competitive modes, an online lobby, or any other multiplayer feature. Plan to play as a solo campaign rather than buying it for online co-op.

That single-player classification is the strongest current platform signal. It does not mean the game requires a permanent connection: 2K separately states that basic play works without online connectivity. Multiplayer availability and internet requirements are different questions, and the answer to the first is that no multiplayer mode is documented for this edition.
Is Mafia 3 cross-platform or cross-play?
No cross-play mode is identified in the official answers and store details reviewed for this FAQ. Because the game is presented as single-player, there is no documented multiplayer session for players on different platforms to join. Do not assume that an Xbox player can connect to a PlayStation or PC player.
Cross-play is also distinct from cross-save and cross-progression. How do I start the Mafia 3 DLC?
The story expansions are not available from the opening minutes. 2K gives a specific progression gate: Lincoln must complete The Sit Down and have all three lieutenants by his side. Once both conditions are met, the missions appear through an indicated location on the in-game map.
- Continue the main campaign until you complete The Sit Down.
- Recruit and retain all three lieutenants so they are present in Lincoln’s organization.
- Open the map after those requirements are satisfied.
- Look for the indicated DLC location or mission marker.
- Travel to that location and interact with the prompt to begin the available expansion mission.
If no expansion marker appears, first verify the two story requirements rather than reinstalling immediately. A player who has purchased DLC but has not finished The Sit Down or does not yet have all three lieutenants will not have reached the unlock point described by 2K.

Do I need PS Plus, Xbox Game Pass Core, or an internet connection?
No subscription is required for ordinary offline play. 2K’s FAQ states: “You don’t need either of those services (or any online connectivity) to play the game straight out of the box.” In the context of current console naming, that means PlayStation Plus and Xbox Game Pass Core are not prerequisites for launching and playing the single-player campaign.
2K still recommends connecting the console or PC to the internet so it can download patches and updates. That recommendation affects maintenance and access to the latest fixes, not the basic ability to start the game offline. If you install from a disc or an already-downloaded digital license, you can play the campaign without arranging an online multiplayer subscription.
Which platforms and editions should existing owners know about?
2K says existing owners on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Steam received the Definitive Edition at no extra charge. The practical download process differs by platform:

Those instructions specifically address the platforms named by 2K. They may not describe every later storefront migration, backward-compatibility arrangement, regional catalog, or account situation. If an older console purchase does not show the expansions, check the same account’s owned add-ons and the platform store’s downloadable-content section before purchasing again.

An older 2K launch announcement described the Deluxe Edition as a digital release with limited physical retail availability. That historical statement does not prove that a new physical copy is currently stocked in every region; verify the exact platform, edition, disc condition, and included entitlements on the store listing you intend to buy.
How loyalty, choices, and district tools affect play
Mafia III’s systems make the length and feel of a play-through depend on decisions, not only mission count. The official FAQ highlights several mechanics that are useful to understand before committing to a particular strategy.
Lieutenant loyalty unlocks upgrades
Weapon and vehicle attribute upgrades become available as the lieutenants’ loyalty rises. Assigning territory and managing relationships therefore has a mechanical consequence in addition to its story impact. If a weapon or vehicle improvement is unavailable, review the relevant lieutenant’s loyalty progression rather than assuming the item is missing from your edition.
Choices can change gameplay and narrative outcomes
Your approach to a situation can alter gameplay. The FAQ specifically notes that a stealth approach affects how an encounter plays out. Balancing the lieutenants’ loyalty also affects narrative outcomes, so there is no single universally optimal distribution if you care about seeing a particular story result. Consider whether you value immediate tactical advantages, a preferred character relationship, or a specific narrative direction before assigning control of a district.

Wiretaps expose enemies and collectibles
Wiretaps reveal nearby enemies and collectibles on the map. In a district that has been tapped, attempting to take over a racket can sometimes give you the option to recruit its boss, which increases total earnings. Without wiretap information, the FAQ says you have no option except killing the boss when confronted. Tapping districts is therefore more than a map-clearing convenience: it can open a different resolution to a racket takeover and improve income.
Finding fuses and using Intel View
Nearby fuses are located around junction boxes. The map and Intel View can reveal where to look. When a fuse objective seems stalled, inspect junction boxes in the surrounding area and switch to Intel View rather than searching randomly across the whole district.
Scoped aiming controls
On an Xbox controller, use the Left Control Stick while in scope mode to aim. On PlayStation 4, use L3 while scoped. These instructions apply to the control guidance in 2K’s FAQ; button layouts can be affected by remapping or platform settings, so a customized control scheme may differ.
Linking My2K
If you want to connect the game to a My2K account, pause the game, open the Game Menu, and choose Link My2K. This account-linking option should not be confused with multiplayer or cross-save support. The available FAQ information does not promise that linking an account transfers campaign progress between platforms.

The DLC is listed as owned but cannot be started
Confirm that the installed product is the Definitive Edition or that the separate content pack has finished downloading. Then check campaign progress: The Sit Down must be complete and all three lieutenants must be by Lincoln’s side before the map location appears.

The console asks for an online subscription
A subscription prompt may relate to a store page, account service, or a different online feature rather than campaign access. 2K’s offline-play statement says PS Plus and Xbox Game Pass Core are not needed to play out of the box. Close the multiplayer or store flow and launch the installed single-player game directly.
An update is unavailable while offline
Offline play and offline patching are different. The campaign can run without internet connectivity, but 2K recommends connecting for updates and patches. If you want the latest fixes, connect briefly, allow the platform to complete its update, and then return to offline play if required.
A save does not appear on another platform
Do not infer cross-save from the offline FAQ or from My2K linking. Cross-platform save transfer was not established in the available information. Treat each platform as having its own save environment unless the platform holder or a current game support page explicitly confirms a transfer method.
Which version is the sensible purchase?
- Choose Definitive Edition if you want the base campaign, all three story expansions, and both listed bonus packs in one product.
- Check an existing PS4 or Xbox One license first because 2K says eligible owners received the Definitive Edition at no extra charge, with console DLC delivered through the platform store.
- Check Steam’s library before buying again because the FAQ says the DLC is added automatically for existing owners.
- Specify your platform when shopping and verify whether a listing is for Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, or Steam.
- Do not buy for multiplayer: the current Xbox listing identifies the game as single-player, and no cross-play mode is documented.
