The upgrade is reported as available to digital owners, the Series X|S listing may not appear automatically in your store results, and physical-disc owners should not assume they qualify. Neither the Xbox Store listing nor the Pure Xbox report on the update, published October 8, 2026, states a price, so check the store page for the charge shown on your account before you install.
What the Series X|S version changes
The headline change is frame rate. The Xbox Store describes the Series X|S edition as a 60 FPS game with technical improvements. The console-upgrade patch notes, as reproduced by Pure Xbox, put it this way:

The 60 FPS claim is tied to the Series X|S listing. Xbox One is listed as a supported platform on the same store page, but the reported sources do not claim the same frame rate there, so do not expect Xbox One performance to match.

Frame rate is not uniform across every cutscene. Real-time cinematics run at 60 FPS, but some pre-rendered movies still play at 30 FPS. The patch notes say:
“Some cinematics, however, are pre-rendered movies that will play at 30 FPS.”

Who can get the upgrade
Pure Xbox reports that the update is available to digital owners of the game. Eligibility for physical-disc owners is handled differently, covered in the section below. Because the Series X|S version may not appear in your library or top search results, the report suggests searching the Xbox Store manually.

How to find and install the Series X|S edition
Pure Xbox outlines the following fallback route. It notes that you may not need it, so check your library and store results first.
- From the Xbox dashboard, press Y to open search.
- Search for “Mafia iii”.
- Choose “Mafia iii Definitive Edition for Xbox Series X|S” from the results.
- Open “Show in Store.”
- Select the Series X|S edition and install it if you are eligible.
Search for the full Series X|S title rather than “Mafia 3.” The Store listing uses the Roman numeral “III,” and the search string in the report uses “iii.”

If you own the game on disc
Pure Xbox mentions Xbox Disc to Digital, the route that converts a physical disc into a digital license. According to the report, claiming a digital license by inserting a disc may qualify you for the new version, but the report qualifies this with “at least in theory.” That is not an official guarantee that every physical Xbox One disc owner qualifies. If the Series X|S edition does not show as eligible after you complete the Disc to Digital process, the report does not describe a further fallback.

The Xbox Store lists Mafia III: Definitive Edition as published by 2K and developed by Hangar 13. The listing lists Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S as supported platforms. The bundle includes the main game, the story DLC, and bonus packs. The story DLC is named as:
