Short answer: Mafia III: Definitive Edition is the 2016 Mafia III game packaged with its post-launch story expansions and bonus packs. It is a complete-content edition, not a ground-up remake of Mafia III. If you already own the original on a console, 2K says you can download the DLC separately at no charge; on PC, the DLC should be enabled automatically.
The practical question is therefore not whether the Definitive Edition tells a newly remade story. It is whether your existing copy already has the same add-ons, which platform and store account you use, and whether the listing you are considering is the correct current SKU.

What Mafia III: Definitive Edition includes
The Xbox product listing identifies five add-on components alongside the main game: three story expansions and two bonus packs. The included package is:

- Faster, Baby!, a story DLC.
- Stones Unturned, a story DLC.
- Sign of the Times, a story DLC.
- Family Kick-Back Pack, a bonus-content pack.
- Judge, Jury & Executioner Weapons Pack, a weapons bonus pack.
2K’s 2020 announcement for Mafia: Trilogy describes Mafia III: Definitive Edition more broadly as including all original bonus add-on content. The itemized Xbox listing is useful because it names the three story DLCs and the two packs rather than leaving “all bonus content” undefined.
#1 Best Overall
That bundle is the edition’s main value. The base campaign is still the same Mafia III release; the difference is that the additional content is assembled with it instead of requiring a separate Season Pass, expansion purchase, or download entitlement.
What the three story DLC names mean for a buyer
The three expansions are separate add-ons, so a store can display the main game and DLC as distinct products even when a Definitive Edition entitlement includes both. This explains why a product page may show a “main game only” label while also stating that DLC is available separately. Read the ownership and add-on section for your account, not just the headline product name.
What the bonus packs add to the package
The Family Kick-Back Pack and Judge, Jury & Executioner Weapons Pack are bonus add-ons rather than additional full campaigns. Their inclusion matters when comparing an original base-game disc or download with the all-content edition, but the available official descriptions do not establish a new campaign, a rebuilt game engine, or a universal visual overhaul for Definitive Edition.

Is Definitive Edition a remake or a remaster?
No evidence in the official material identifies Mafia III: Definitive Edition as a ground-up remake. 2K uses that language for the first Mafia game in its Mafia: Trilogy announcement, explicitly calling that title a built-from-the-ground-up remake. The same announcement presents Mafia III: Definitive Edition through its bundled original bonus content.
That distinction prevents a common buying mistake. Do not expect a rewritten story, redesigned missions, or a remake-level reconstruction simply because “Definitive Edition” appears in the title. The supported difference is content packaging and entitlement. The sources also do not establish a graphics upgrade that applies identically to every platform.

There is one platform-specific technical statement: the current Xbox listing describes 60 frames per second gameplay and technical improvements for Xbox Series X|S. That statement belongs to the Xbox Series X|S listing; it should not be generalized to the PlayStation version or the PC version without checking those stores and their current compatibility notes.
How the original 2016 editions compare
Mafia III launched in 2016. A 2K Support version guide from that launch period distinguishes three original editions. It is useful for understanding what an early purchaser may own, but it is not a current store catalog and should not be treated as one.

| Edition or ownership route | What the contemporaneous information establishes | How it compares with Definitive Edition |
|---|---|---|
| Standard Edition | Base game and preorder content were listed for the launch-era Standard Edition. | It did not necessarily include the later story DLC or every bonus pack. |
| Digital Deluxe Edition | Base game with the Season Pass in the launch-era guide. | May already provide the major add-ons, but verify the actual DLC entitlements on the current account. |
| Collector’s Edition | Base game, Season Pass, and physical collector items in the launch-era guide. | Physical extras do not automatically make it identical to a current digital Definitive Edition listing. |
| Definitive Edition | Main game, three named story DLCs, and two named bonus packs according to the Xbox listing; 2K also describes all original bonus add-on content. | Designed to put the game and add-on content under one edition name. |
| Existing owner | Console owners can obtain the DLC pack free, according to 2K Support; PC DLC should be enabled automatically. | Buying another copy may be unnecessary if the account receives the add-on entitlement. |
The exact contents of every disc, regional SKU, and platform listing are not established as identical. A launch-era Deluxe or Collector’s purchase can have a different entitlement history from a later digital purchase, and physical collector items are separate from downloadable game content.
If you already own Mafia III
Check your existing entitlement before buying Definitive Edition again. 2K Support’s “How to Download Mafia III’s DLC for Free,” updated July 5, 2023, gives different guidance for consoles and PC.
Console owners
- Sign in to the same PlayStation or Xbox account that owns Mafia III.
- Open the platform store and search for
Mafia III: DLC Content Pack. - Choose the free add-on listing, confirm that it is associated with your game entitlement, and start the download.
- Open the game’s manage-content or add-ons screen and verify that the installed items appear.
- Launch Mafia III and check that the story expansions and bonus content are available from the game’s menus or content selection.
2K’s instruction is that existing console owners do not need to purchase Definitive Edition merely to enjoy the DLC. Store interfaces can change, so use the current prompts shown by your platform. If the free pack is not displayed, confirm that the game and the store account are on the same platform, that a disc is from a compatible region, and that you are not signed into a different account.

PC owners
- Open the PC game client account that owns Mafia III.
- Check the game’s properties, manage-DLC panel, or installed-content list.
- Confirm that the three story expansions and bonus packs are enabled or queued for installation.
- Restart the client or verify the game files if the add-ons do not appear after entitlement synchronization.
2K says PC DLC should be automatically enabled. That does not mean every client uses the same screen or download timing; the practical check is whether the DLC is listed as owned and installed on the account that owns the base game.

Where Definitive Edition is available
2K’s 2020 trilogy announcement and launch materials describe Mafia III: Definitive Edition as available both on its own and as part of Mafia: Trilogy. The named launch platforms were PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
The PlayStation product listing reviewed identifies a PS4 version and presents the full game with story DLC framing. Its captured store text also says “Main game only. DLC available for free separately.” Store text can vary by country, account, and the way a product is grouped, so treat that wording as a prompt to inspect the specific edition and add-on entitlements rather than as proof that every PS4 purchase has the same package.
The current Xbox listing adds Xbox Series X|S support language, including 60 FPS gameplay and technical improvements. Because that is a statement on the Xbox listing, it is not evidence that the PS4 or PC versions have the same frame-rate mode or technical changes.
Standalone purchase or Mafia: Trilogy?
A standalone Definitive Edition is appropriate when you want Mafia III and its add-ons without purchasing the other games. Mafia: Trilogy is the bundle route when you want the trilogy package. Compare the product description, included games, and your existing library before checkout; the word “trilogy” does not change which Mafia III DLC is attached to an individual entitlement.
A practical comparison checklist
Use these comparison points when deciding between an original copy, a Definitive Edition listing, and a trilogy bundle:
| Question | Why it matters | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Are all three story DLCs listed? | A base-game listing may omit post-launch expansions. | Look for Faster, Baby!, Stones Unturned, and Sign of the Times. |
| Are both bonus packs included? | “All bonus content” and a base game are not the same entitlement. | Look for Family Kick-Back Pack and Judge, Jury & Executioner Weapons Pack. |
| Do you already own Mafia III? | A second purchase can duplicate content you can download free on console. | Search for Mafia III: DLC Content Pack while signed into the owning account. |
| Which platform is the listing for? | Features and entitlement rules can differ by platform. | Check PS4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, or PC wording before buying. |
| Is it standalone or part of Mafia: Trilogy? | The bundle changes the number of games, not necessarily the Mafia III add-on list. | Read the complete “included” section and your library’s ownership record. |
| Is it physical or digital? | Disc region, used-copy history, and download entitlements can differ. | Confirm the format and the account or voucher details for that specific listing. |
Common buying and installation pitfalls
Assuming the edition name guarantees identical content
“Definitive Edition” is a useful shorthand, but the evidence does not prove that every region, platform, disc, and digital SKU has an identical presentation. Use the actual store’s included-content list and your account’s add-on page as the final check.
Buying again before checking free DLC
Console owners who already own Mafia III should first search for the free DLC Content Pack. If the platform recognizes the base game, repurchasing the complete edition may provide no additional benefit beyond a different library label or a replacement copy.
Expecting a remake-level upgrade
The edition’s confirmed distinction is bundled content. The official material does not establish a new story, rebuilt mission design, or universal graphics overhaul. Only the Xbox Series X|S listing makes a specific 60 FPS and technical-improvements claim.
Confusing a trilogy entitlement with a Mafia III entitlement
Mafia: Trilogy is a separate bundle context. Make sure you know whether your transaction adds Mafia III alone or the other trilogy titles as well, and check the individual game entries after purchase.

Not seeing DLC after installation
Check the owning account, platform, region compatibility for physical media, and the store’s manage-add-ons screen. On PC, allow the client to synchronize the entitlement; on console, search directly for the free DLC Content Pack if it is not already queued.
Who should buy Mafia III: Definitive Edition?
New players
For a first purchase, Definitive Edition is the straightforward way to obtain the base game with the three named story expansions and the two bonus packs in one package, provided the listing you select identifies those contents for your platform.
Players who own the Standard Edition
Check the account’s DLC page before spending money. If the console store offers the free Mafia III: DLC Content Pack, download it instead of buying another copy. On PC, verify that the add-ons are automatically enabled.

The launch-era guide says those editions included the Season Pass, and the Collector’s Edition also included physical items. Compare your actual account entitlements with the Definitive Edition list. A physical collector item cannot be recreated by a digital upgrade, while already-owned DLC may make a second game purchase unnecessary.
Players choosing between standalone and trilogy
Choose standalone when your goal is Mafia III and its add-ons only. Choose the trilogy package when you also want the other Mafia games and its price and platform availability suit you. In either case, inspect the current product page because prices, promotions, and store wording change.
Bottom line
Mafia III: Definitive Edition is best understood as the complete-content package for Mafia III: the original game, Faster, Baby!, Stones Unturned, Sign of the Times, Family Kick-Back Pack, and Judge, Jury & Executioner Weapons Pack. It is not supported by the available official descriptions as a ground-up remake. Existing console owners should claim the free DLC pack first, while PC owners should check that the DLC has been automatically enabled. Platform-specific claims—especially Xbox Series X|S support, 60 FPS, and technical improvements—must be verified against the store listing for the system you actually use.
