What is new in the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S editions?
Mafia III: Definitive Edition now has separate native listings for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, rather than being presented only as the older PS4 or Xbox One release running through backward compatibility. The PlayStation Store and Xbox Store listings both give October 8, 2026 as the release date for the current-generation editions.

How the advertised performance improvements should be understood
60-FPS gameplay
The PS5 and Xbox Series X|S listings advertise gameplay at 60 frames per second. That should be read as the target or supported presentation described by the publisher and storefront, not as a laboratory result showing that every scene holds exactly 60 frames per second. The official material does not include frame-time charts, minimum frame rates or separate measurements for PS5, PS5 Pro, Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S.
For a player coming from the PS4 or Xbox One release, the intended benefit is a smoother image during driving, combat and camera movement. The practical result can still vary by scene, display settings and console model. In particular, the sources do not establish whether Series S uses the same resolution or rendering settings as Series X, so do not assume the two Xbox models are visually identical.
Increased resolution
2K lists increased resolution as one of the technical upgrades. That means the native editions are designed to render the game more sharply than the previous console versions, but no official listing in the available material names a 1080p, 1440p, 4K or dynamic-resolution target. A television or monitor may also scale the output, so the number shown by a display is not proof of the game’s internal render resolution.

The current-generation versions are described as having reduced loading times. Faster storage and the native builds are intended to shorten waits when starting the game or moving between sections, but 2K does not publish a duration in seconds or a test method. Treat the improvement as a stated technical goal rather than a guaranteed percentage reduction.

Bug fixes
Bug fixes are part of the 2026 edition description. The announcement does not provide a complete change log, identify every corrected mission or specify whether a particular PS4 or Xbox One issue is fixed. If you are returning because of one named bug, check the current platform listing and any post-release notes before assuming that issue has been addressed.
PS5-specific features
DualSense support
The PlayStation Store listing identifies support for DualSense vibration and adaptive trigger effects. A compatible DualSense controller can therefore provide more than the basic rumble available on older hardware. The listing does not explain which actions use trigger resistance or how extensively the effects are applied, so the feature should be viewed as supported rather than as a detailed control redesign.
PS5 Pro Enhanced label
The same listing labels the game “PS5 Pro Enhanced.” That designation confirms that the store recognizes enhancements for Sony’s higher-specification PS5 Pro model. It does not, by itself, specify a resolution, frame-rate mode or image-quality setting. The available official information gives no PS5-versus-PS5 Pro benchmark, so buyers should not infer a particular Pro-only output from the label.
Xbox Series X|S-specific features
HDR10
The Xbox Store listing includes HDR10 capability. On a compatible HDR10 television, the console can output high-dynamic-range video when the system and display are configured for HDR. HDR10 support does not establish a specific peak-brightness level, calibration recommendation or image-quality parity with PS5.

60 fps+ storefront capability label
Xbox also marks the release with a “60 fps+” capability label, while the wider product description advertises 60-FPS gameplay. These are storefront capability indicators, not an independent test of sustained performance. They also do not document separate settings for Series X and Series S.
Single-player classification
The Xbox listing identifies the title as single-player. That is the same core campaign format players know from the previous releases; the current-generation edition is not presented as adding a multiplayer mode.
What happens to your PS4 or Xbox One progress?
Progress continuity is the clearest disadvantage for an existing owner. 2K states that saves and achievements from the previous console versions do not transfer to the corresponding native editions:

- A PS4 save does not transfer to the PS5 edition.
- PS4 achievements do not carry into the PS5 achievement set.
- An Xbox One save does not transfer to the Xbox Series X|S edition.
- Xbox One achievements do not carry into the native Series edition.
This means a current-generation purchase should be treated as a new progression track. Cloud synchronization or console-to-console migration cannot be assumed to solve the problem, because the restriction concerns the edition itself rather than merely where the save file is stored. Keep the old installation if you want to continue an unfinished PS4 or Xbox One campaign.

The current Definitive Edition bundle includes the base game and its major add-on content:
- Faster, Baby! story DLC
- Stones Unturned story DLC
- Sign of the Times story DLC
- Family Kick-Back Pack
- Judge, Jury & Executioner Weapons Pack
The bundle description establishes inclusion of these items; it does not indicate that the 2026 native editions add a new story chapter, mission pack or multiplayer component. If you already own downloadable content separately, compare the exact product name shown in your regional store before buying again.

Do not assume that an old copy automatically qualifies for a free upgrade. The cited storefront listings confirm that native PS5 and Xbox Series X|S editions exist, but they do not establish a universal entitlement rule covering every purchase date, disc, digital license or region.

Before purchasing, open the Mafia III product page while signed into the account that owns the older game. Check whether the store displays an upgrade price, an included entitlement or a separate purchase requirement. Disc owners should also verify whether their console model accepts the disc: a digital-only console cannot validate a disc license. Because the available official material does not settle all of these cases, the platform’s current checkout screen is the authoritative place to confirm eligibility.
Which version should a returning player use?
Choose the native PS5 or Xbox Series X|S edition when:
- You want the advertised 60-FPS presentation on current hardware.
- Shorter loading times and the stated resolution increase matter more than preserving existing progress.
- You want the PS5 DualSense features, PS5 Pro Enhanced designation or Xbox HDR10 support.
- You are beginning the campaign again or have finished the old version.
- You want the complete bundle with all listed story DLC and bonus packs in one product.
Keep using the PS4 or Xbox One edition when:
- You are midway through a campaign and do not want to restart.
- Your priority is retaining the old save and achievement history.
- Your current setup does not support HDR10 or you do not use a DualSense controller.
- The store does not show a confirmed upgrade entitlement for your license.
On Xbox, Series X and Series S share the native-edition listing, but the available specifications do not provide a complete model-by-model comparison. On PlayStation, the Pro label confirms additional optimization recognition without defining the exact settings. Choose based on the features you can verify in your own store listing rather than on assumed parity.
What the official information does not tell us
Several details remain unquantified. There is no published numeric resolution for any of the four current-generation console configurations, no measured loading-time comparison, no test of frame-rate consistency and no full bug-fix list. The sources also do not provide a detailed split between Xbox Series X and Series S or a technical explanation of what the PS5 Pro enhancements change.
Those omissions matter when comparing reviews or user reports. A screenshot labelled “4K” may describe output resolution rather than internal rendering, and an anecdotal claim about a smooth 60 FPS is not equivalent to a documented benchmark. Until 2K or the platform holders publish more granular specifications, the defensible comparison is limited to the advertised improvements and the platform features listed above.
How to check that you are buying the native edition
- Open the PlayStation Store or Xbox Store on the account and console where you intend to play.
- Search for the complete product name, Mafia III: Definitive Edition, and confirm that the platform is shown as PS5 or Xbox Series X|S rather than only PS4 or Xbox One.
- Read the product features: the PS5 page should show the DualSense and PS5 Pro Enhanced labels; the Xbox page should show HDR10, single-player and the 60 fps+ capability label.
- Confirm that the listed bundle contains the three story DLC packs and the two bonus weapon or outfit packs if you expect the complete edition.
- Review the price or upgrade prompt tied to your account. Do not infer eligibility from a listing for the separate first-game remake.
- After purchase, install the native version and keep the previous installation if you still need access to its save.
Bottom line for PS4 and Xbox One owners
The 2026 PS5 and Xbox Series X|S releases are meaningful technical refreshes: native listings, advertised 60-FPS gameplay, increased resolution, reduced loading times and bug fixes, with additional platform features such as DualSense effects, PS5 Pro Enhanced status and Xbox HDR10. They are not documented as a fully benchmarked, identical 4K/60 experience across every model. The decisive trade-off is progress: saves and achievements do not transfer, and a universal free-upgrade rule has not been established. Buy the native edition for its current-generation presentation, but retain the old version if your existing campaign or achievement history is more important than the technical improvements.
