The Definitive Edition is a content bundle, not a separate campaign. It contains the full Mafia III game, three story expansions and two bonus packs. The official 2K Trilogy FAQ identifies the package contents as follows:

What platforms is Mafia III Definitive Edition on?
Current official store pages list the game for both generations of PlayStation and Xbox:

“60 FPS” here is a feature claim in the platform description, not an independently measured frame-rate test. Actual availability, pricing and edition labels can vary by account region, so open the store page for the console and country where you intend to play.
PS4 and PS5
The PlayStation listing identifies both PS4 and PS5 versions. The PS5 entry specifically calls out 60 FPS gameplay and technical improvements. That description does not, by itself, establish that a PS4 save can be imported into the PS5 version or that every PS4 owner receives a PS5 entitlement.
Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S
The Xbox listing identifies Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. Its Series X|S description makes the equivalent 60 FPS and technical-improvements claim. The listing does not confirm that an Xbox One save transfers to Series X|S or that an owner’s account automatically includes every later-generation listing.

What about PC?
The 2K ownership FAQ discusses Steam ownership, but the material available here does not establish a complete, current list of PC storefronts. If you play on PC, verify the store and account entitlement directly rather than assuming that every PC launcher carries the same edition.
How existing owners receive the bundled content
The 2K Trilogy FAQ says existing Mafia III owners on Xbox One, PS4 and Steam receive the Definitive Edition entitlement. Its instructions describe the following process for the ownership situation covered by that FAQ:
- On Xbox One and PS4, owners obtain the DLC and bonus-pack bundle through their respective console stores at no additional charge.
- On Steam, the additional content is added automatically.
These instructions describe the accounts and editions addressed by that FAQ. They are not a universal guarantee for every later console listing, disc region, used copy or account configuration. Sign in to the account that owns the base game and check the platform store’s add-ons or library page before deleting or repurchasing anything.

Can you play offline without PS Plus or Game Pass Core?
Yes. 2K’s Mafia III FAQ, updated July 8, 2026, states that neither PlayStation Plus nor Xbox Game Pass Core, and no online connection, is required to play “straight out of the box.”

“You don’t need either of those services (or any online connectivity) to play the game straight out of the box.”
The same answer encourages connecting the console or PC to the internet to download game updates and patches. Offline capability means the base installation can be launched without a subscription; it does not mean that updates are unnecessary or that an unpatched installation will have every fix and improvement.
Practical offline setup
- Install the game and any included add-ons while signed in to the owning platform account.
- Connect to the internet at least once, if possible, so the platform can check for patches and download the included DLC entitlement.
- Launch the game after updates finish and confirm that the expansion locations appear on the in-game map once the story prerequisite is met.
- For later offline sessions, start the game from the installed library rather than attempting to download an add-on while disconnected.
How do you start the DLC missions?
All three lieutenants and a specific story mission are required. The exact guidance in the 2K Trilogy FAQ is: “After Lincoln has completed the ‘Sit Down’ mission and has all three Lieutenants by his side, you’ll be able start DLC missions by going to the indicated location on the in-game map.”

- Recruit and retain all three lieutenants so they are by Lincoln’s side.
- Open the in-game map and locate the marker for the relevant expansion.
- Travel to that indicated location and enter it to begin the DLC mission chain.
If a DLC marker is absent, first verify both conditions: the Sit Down mission must be complete, and all three lieutenants must be present. Installing the packs alone does not bypass this story gate.

How lieutenant loyalty and choices affect progression
Lieutenant loyalty unlocks upgrades
According to the Mafia III FAQ, weapon and vehicle attribute upgrades become available as lieutenant loyalty increases. Loyalty is therefore part of the progression system, not merely a dialogue statistic. Assignments and decisions that change a lieutenant’s standing can affect when those upgrades become available.
Stealth changes mission gameplay
2K also states that stealth choices affect mission gameplay. Approaching an objective quietly can therefore produce a different tactical experience from a loud assault, even when the overall campaign objective is the same.
Balancing loyalty affects the narrative experience
The FAQ says that balancing lieutenant loyalty affects the narrative experience. It does not provide a guaranteed mission order, ending outcome or numeric loyalty threshold, so treat loyalty management as a strategic choice rather than a promise of one specific result.
Can a PS4 save transfer to PS5, or an Xbox One save to Series X|S?
That policy is not confirmed by the current platform listings or the support pages cited above. The existence of separate PS4/PS5 and Xbox One/Series X|S listings does not prove that saves migrate, and it does not prove that they do not.

Before starting a new-generation playthrough, check the save-transfer instructions for your platform and ask 2K Support about your exact edition, account and region. Do not delete the old installation or overwrite the original save until the transfer policy is explicitly confirmed. Cloud-save behavior, disc upgrades and digital entitlements can differ by platform and account, so a general statement would be misleading.
What should you do if a mission will not progress?
The available 2K FAQ does not provide checkpoint-specific recovery steps for an objective that fails to advance, a reload loop or a save that will not load. It also does not validate community workarounds involving data deletion, save-file edits or repeated checkpoint resets.
Collect the details support needs
- Platform and generation: PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S or PC.
- Digital or disc ownership, including the store region and account that owns the game.
- The exact mission name and objective text.
- What happens when progression stops: missing marker, frozen character, failed trigger, crash or a save-load error.
- Whether the game and all available patches are installed.
Use a conservative recovery sequence
- Pause and note the exact objective and location instead of immediately deleting a save.
- Quit to the platform dashboard and relaunch the game after confirming that installation and updates are complete.
- Load an earlier in-game save only if one already exists; do not overwrite the only copy while testing.
- If the same objective still fails, contact 2K Support with the details above and follow the case-specific instructions.
The original Mafia III Xbox One online manual explains the original controls and systems, but it does not settle current-generation save transfer or provide a verified fix for a blocked mission.
