Can an iCloud calendar invite infect your Mac? Not by itself in the MacSync attack described by Kaspersky in September 2026. The chain began when a person downloaded and ran a malicious app; in at least one sample, software already running on the Mac then fetched a public iCloud calendar file and passed its contents to a shell. The calendar was a way to retrieve commands, not the initial infection.
How the iCloud calendar was used
Kaspersky’s analysis describes a malicious disk-image app that removed its quarantine attribute and decrypted a link for a later downloader. In at least one sample, that link led to a public iCloud calendar. Other samples used links to attacker-controlled servers, so the calendar method was not universal. Kaspersky’s technical report

The downloader fetched the calendar data and fed it line by line into zsh, a command-line shell. The ordinary calendar text was not valid shell syntax and produced errors. The attacker’s commands placed after the event’s DESCRIPTION: line could run, fetching a compressed archive hosted on iCloud. That archive contained an app bundle which led to further stages.

This is different from opening Calendar or viewing an event: the reported behavior required a malicious loader to actively retrieve the file and pipe its contents into a shell. Kaspersky’s report does not say that Apple Calendar was compromised or that simply receiving an invitation ran commands.

How the attack reached a Mac
MacSync is described as malware-as-a-service, with operators choosing how to lure people into running it. The newer samples Kaspersky examined started with malicious disk images. One campaign promoted a nonexistent cryptocurrency wallet called Toria through a dedicated page and social media. The broader lures included fake or cracked software and social engineering. Help Net Security’s September 2026 coverage
The essential step was running the malicious app or loader. Kaspersky reports that the newer payload used Swift and Objective-C components, in contrast with earlier variants written in AppleScript. Its malware analyst Sergey Puzan said the attackers had “substantially overhauled their approach” to running the stealer and backdoor payloads, moving from AppleScripts to executable files written in Swift and Objective-C. What MacSync tried to steal
The infostealer targeted information with value for account access, cryptocurrency theft, and follow-on attacks. Kaspersky lists these categories:

- The device login and password, the Keychain file, and system information.
- Developer configuration for SSH, AWS, Kubernetes, and Git.

These targets make the threat relevant beyond browser accounts: developer credentials and shell history can expose access paths to work systems as well as personal information.

How a separate backdoor sought to stay on the Mac
Kaspersky also found an Objective-C backdoor disguised as Finder. It used a LaunchAgent named com.apple.finder.agent, changes to .zshrc, and global Git hooks for persistence. A helper reportedly terminated several notification processes to prevent an alert about the new LaunchAgent.
The backdoor could run AppleScript supplied by an attacker and perform other tasks. Kaspersky did not have the server-supplied scripts for every command, however, so some functions were inferred from command names and status messages rather than confirmed from the scripts themselves. The researchers also could not determine what a component called sn_relay did. A possible role in intercepting browser traffic was a suspicion based on names and server messages, not an established capability. Kaspersky’s technical report

What to do if you encountered a suspicious installer or command
- Do not paste unfamiliar commands from websites, messages, or support chats into Terminal.
- Avoid suspicious disk-image downloads, especially software offered as a crack or through an unexpected promotion.
- Be cautious if an unfamiliar installer unexpectedly asks for an administrator password.
- If you believe you ran a suspicious app or command, seek trusted macOS security or incident-response help. The reporting does not validate a MacSync-specific cleanup procedure, so avoid improvising one from descriptions of the malware.
The Kaspersky and Help Net Security reporting cited here does not establish a victim count, prevalence estimate, financial-loss figure, or detection rate for this campaign. It also does not endorse a particular consumer security product as a way to detect or remove MacSync.
