Set whether macOS enrollment is allowed and whether personally owned devices are allowed. First make sure corporate Macs are registered by serial number or enrolled through Apple Automated Device Enrollment (ADE): Intune otherwise classifies Macs as personally owned by default. These restrictions manage enrollment eligibility; Microsoft says they are not security features.
Choose the right restriction
Intune has two kinds of enrollment restriction. Device platform restrictions control whether a platform such as macOS can enroll and whether personally owned devices can enroll. Device limit restrictions cap the number of devices a user can enroll. To block personal Macs while allowing organization-owned Macs, configure the macOS platform restriction and ensure the corporate Macs are identified correctly.

Intune applies its default policy to user and userless enrollments until a higher-priority policy is assigned. Restrictions apply to user-driven enrollment; for enrollment scenarios that are not user-driven, Intune enforces the default policy. Check assignment and priority rather than assuming a newly created policy governs every enrollment route.

Configure a macOS platform restriction
- Sign in to the Intune admin center and go to Devices > Device onboarding > Enrollment > Device platform restriction.
- Open the macOS restriction tab and create a restriction or edit an existing one.
- Set the MDM platform control to allow or block macOS enrollment. Set the Personally-owned control to match your BYOD policy.
- Assign the restriction to the intended users or groups, then review its priority so it takes precedence where intended.
- If using Apple device filters, review the available properties: manufacturer, model, OS version, ownership, and enrollment policy name.
An Intune Administrator role is required to create, edit, delete, or reprioritize device platform restrictions. Other built-in Intune roles have read-only access. After assigning a group or filter, allow for processing time: Microsoft says assignment processing between Microsoft Entra and Intune typically takes about 15 minutes.

Make sure Intune recognizes corporate Macs
Intune classifies macOS devices as personally owned by default. For this restriction to allow company Macs while blocking personal ones, register corporate Mac serial numbers or enroll the devices through Apple ADE. Check serial-number records and ADE assignments before enforcing a personal-device block; otherwise, an intended company device may still be treated as personal.
Microsoft recommends BYOD device enrollment for personal Macs and ADE or Apple Configurator for organization-owned Macs. Choose the enrollment route based on ownership and the level of control the organization needs:

Prepare organization-owned Macs with ADE
Microsoft’s ADE setup guidance lists these prerequisites: a new or wiped eligible Mac purchased through Apple Business or Apple School Manager, access to the Apple portal, an active Apple token (.p7m file), and an Apple MDM push certificate in Intune. ADE supports supervised, over-the-air enrollment policies during setup; it can also install device configurations users may not be able to remove.
In an ADE enrollment policy, locked enrollment can prevent users from unenrolling their Macs. Microsoft says this setting cannot be changed after enrollment without wiping the device, so decide whether to enable it before deploying the policy. For supported macOS ADE devices, local administrator account configuration can also enable Microsoft LAPS, which manages a randomized administrator password through Intune.

Know what restrictions do—and do not—control
Enrollment restrictions affect new enrollments, not Macs that are already enrolled. Use them to set an enrollment boundary, then manage existing devices through the organization’s broader security and compliance controls.
Microsoft describes enrollment restrictions as a best-effort barrier for non-malicious users, not a security feature: a compromised device may misrepresent its attributes. A restriction therefore should not be treated as proof that an enrolling Mac is trustworthy or as protection against a determined attacker.
