If macOS Tahoe does not appear in System Settings → General → Software Update, the cause is usually one of four things: the Mac is not compatible, it is already running the newest version available to it, Software Update needs to be refreshed, or a work or school policy is deferring the upgrade. Apple lists macOS Tahoe 26.6.2 as its current Tahoe release, with security fixes, as of August 18, 2026 (Apple’s Tahoe update history).
Work through the checks below in order. Refreshing Software Update cannot override a hardware restriction or an organization’s management policy.

1. Check which macOS version is installed
First establish whether you need a major upgrade to Tahoe or only a point update within Tahoe.
- Open the Apple menu.
- Choose About This Mac.
- Read the macOS name and version. Select the version number to reveal additional build information.
Moving from Sequoia 15 (or an older release) to Tahoe 26 is an upgrade. Moving from Tahoe 26.6.1 to 26.6.2 is an update. A Mac that cannot run Tahoe can still receive updates for the macOS generation it supports. Apple explains this distinction in Update macOS on Mac.

Compare your installed version with Apple’s current release page rather than relying on an older support article. Apple’s pages can be updated at different times and may show regional publication dates.
2. Verify that the exact Mac model supports Tahoe 26
Software Update offers only software compatible with the Mac model. Do not decide eligibility from “Intel” or “Apple silicon” alone: Apple supports selected Intel models as well as Apple-silicon Macs.
In About This Mac, record the model name and year (or chip), then compare it with Apple’s detailed list at macOS Tahoe 26 is compatible with these computers. The supported families include:

3. Refresh Software Update using Apple’s documented controls
- Open Apple menu → System Settings → General → Software Update.
- Wait for the automatic check to finish.
- If no release appears, click Check for Update.
- With Software Update open, press Command-R to refresh it.
- Close and reopen System Settings, then check Software Update again.
Apple also says you can search for Software Update with Spotlight and open it from the results. If Tahoe is incompatible, these refresh actions will not make it appear.
4. Restart, connect power, and try again
Restart the Mac before escalating. This is especially sensible after a failed attempt, a settings change, a long period of sleep or uptime, or when Software Update says a restart is pending.
- Connect a MacBook to power.
- Use a reliable internet connection.
- Temporarily disconnect a VPN, content filter, or captive-portal network if it interferes with Apple services.
- Close demanding applications before starting the installer.
Back up first with Time Machine or another current backup. During installation the Mac can restart several times and may show progress bars or a temporarily blank screen. Do not close the lid or put the Mac to sleep while installation is running; these precautions are covered in Apple’s update instructions.
5. Review automatic-update and security settings
- Open System Settings → General → Software Update.
- Select More Info beside Automatic Updates.
- Confirm the options you want are enabled.
- Also check System Settings → Privacy & Security → Background Security Improvements and enable Automatically Install if appropriate.
Apple separately recommends enabling Install system data files and security updates. These controls help deliver security and background updates; they do not make an unsupported Mac eligible for Tahoe and do not guarantee that a major upgrade will be offered immediately. 6. Check storage and network conditions
Apple does not publish one universal free-space number for every Tahoe installation in the cited upgrade guidance. The installer can need substantial temporary space, so follow the amount Software Update displays and free space if macOS reports that storage is insufficient.
- Keep the Mac on power throughout the download and installation.
- Prefer a stable, unrestricted network rather than a captive portal.
- Remove unnecessary files if the startup disk is nearly full.
- Retry after restarting if the download stalls or the check repeatedly fails.
These conditions can explain a failed check or installation, but they do not explain an unsupported model being offered Tahoe.
7. Determine whether the Mac is managed by an employer or school
A business or school Mac can deliberately defer major operating-system upgrades through mobile-device-management (MDM) software. In that case, no amount of pressing Check for Update will bypass the policy.
Apple documents a specific Sequoia scenario in which an administrator may need to update the Mac to Sequoia 15.7.5 or later, use one deferral period for all operating-system updates, install the organization-approved Tahoe version through its device-management service, or remove/change the major-update deferral. These actions require administrator access. Contact your IT administrator rather than removing management profiles or attempting to circumvent the policy. 8. If Tahoe appears but installation fails
A visible update that fails to install is a different problem from an update that never appears. For an installation failure:
- Confirm that your backup is current.
- Connect power and ensure the Mac has the storage shown as necessary by Software Update.
- Restart and retry the installation.
- Leave the Mac alone through restarts, progress bars, or a temporary blank display.
- If the same error returns, follow Apple’s installation or startup-recovery guidance and contact Apple Support.
Do not treat a failed installer as evidence that the Mac is incompatible; confirm the model and the exact error separately.
9. What “Your Mac is up to date” can mean
That message does not necessarily mean the Mac runs the newest macOS generation overall. It can mean the Mac is already on its newest compatible release, Tahoe is not compatible with the model, an MDM policy is deferring the upgrade, or Software Update has not completed a successful refresh.

Use the sequence above to distinguish those cases. Once compatibility, version, management, network, power, and storage have been checked, contact Apple Support if an eligible Mac still cannot detect the release.

10. If the Mac is unsupported
There is no normal Software Update fix for a model outside Apple’s Tahoe compatibility list. Install the newest macOS version Apple supports for that Mac instead, if one is offered.
Apple’s installer application, macOS Recovery, and bootable installer media are alternative installation methods, but Apple presents Software Update as the preferred route because it offers compatible software. Use alternatives only as escalation options and follow Apple’s instructions at How to upgrade to macOS Tahoe 26. Unofficial patchers are outside Apple’s supported installation path and can affect security, updates, drivers, supportability, and data integrity.
A diagnosis-first checklist
- Identify the installed macOS in About This Mac.
- Record the exact Mac model and compare it with Apple’s Tahoe list.
- Refresh System Settings → General → Software Update with Check for Update, Command-R, and a reopen.
- Restart, connect power, and use a reliable network.
- Check available storage and automatic-update settings.
- Ask whether an employer or school manages the Mac.
- If the Mac is eligible but the update remains absent, retry later and contact Apple Support.
The Bottom Line
When Tahoe is missing, check compatibility and the installed version before trying fixes. Refresh Software Update, restart on power, verify storage and network conditions, and involve the administrator for a managed Mac. If Apple’s model list excludes your Mac, the newest compatible macOS—not Tahoe—is the supported destination.
