MacKenzie Scott’s Last Days in Two Nations (A History in Eighteen Minds) is a speculative political novel released free in installments on Substack in August 2026. Its divided-America setting and 18 perspectives have prompted critics to debate whether its uncertainty is deliberate or whether the story is simply difficult to follow. The reviews do not establish what Scott intended the novel to mean, so there is no settled answer to what message she is trying to send.
What is Last Days in Two Nations about?
The novel imagines an America split between the relatively free “Still United” states and the authoritarian Dakota Membership, governed by Damian Paxton. It follows 18 perspectives, as signaled by its subtitle, A History in Eighteen Minds. Reviewers describe a world shaped by coercive controls, including gene-editing and re-education.
The book is speculative fiction, not a factual account of current U.S. politics. Its political premise invites comparisons and interpretations, but the available reviews do not establish that any character is a portrait of a particular real person.
Why are critics calling it baffling?
“Baffling” is a critical judgment, not a consensus fact. The complaints cluster around two different issues: uncertainty about what events mean, and difficulty tracking basic narrative information such as who is speaking, when a scene occurs, and what is at stake.

The ending and the unanswered questions
In Business Insider, writer and editor Eve Sneider calls the ending “a baffling conclusion fit for a baffling project.” Her review argues that the novel’s turns and conclusion leave readers with more questions than answers about Scott’s message. Sneider also criticizes the PDF’s manuscript-like, double-spaced presentation and reports typos; those are her assessments of the edition and its polish.
Confusion in the opening and the format
Vanity Fair’s Keziah Weir examined the prologue and early chapters while serialization was still underway, so her piece is not a review of the completed novel. She found the premise ambitious and the opening atmospheric, but describes wanting repeatedly to mark up the text, points to apparent inconsistencies, and says the presentation gives the work an unfinished feel.

Fortune also reports that the New York Post described the novel as “hard to untangle.” That characterization is relayed through Fortune.
Does the novel’s ambiguity have a purpose?
Possibly—but the distinction matters. Speaking to Fortune, Morissa Schwartz, founder of GenZ Publishing and a literature doctorate, said of the prologue and epilogue: “Ambiguity appears purposeful in the framing sections.” She also cautioned that purposeful ambiguity does not remove the need for readers to understand the speaker, chronology, and stakes: uncertainty about an event’s meaning is different from confusion about the basic shape of a scene.

Schwartz also warns against treating the cast as a puzzle whose answer is a set of real-world equivalents: “Hunting for a real-world counterpart can become a distraction if it turns every character into a clue and leaves their psychological contradictions unread.” That is a useful limit on political interpretation, not proof of what Scott intended.
What message is Scott trying to send?
The reviews suggest possible themes—authoritarian control, morally compromised choices, relationships, narcissistic power, and the instability of a single linear account—but those are interpretations by critics, not a definitive explanation from Scott. The available reporting does not document an authorial statement explaining the novel’s intended message. Readers can draw their own conclusions, but claiming that Scott meant a specific political allegory would go beyond what has been established.

Scott has previously described an interest in complexity and sustained writing. In a 2013 interview with Charlie Rose, quoted by Fortune, she said: “I tend to be interested in complex problems more than simple ones,” and “I like to work on long projects. I like to endlessly analyze conversations and think about words and tinker with words.” That earlier comment offers context for her approach to writing; it does not explain this novel’s particular meaning.

Fortune reports the work at about 80,000 words and 317 pages; Inc. independently describes it as an 80,000-word, 317-page manuscript. Those are reported figures, not independently verified measurements here.
This is Scott’s return to fiction after 13 years. Her previous novels were The Testing of Luther Albright (2005) and Traps (2013). Fortune says the first won an American Book Award and that Traps received a cooler critical response; Vanity Fair notes that both earlier books were traditionally published, with Traps published by Knopf.
What the Substack release does—and does not—show
Publishing in installments gave readers direct access to the work and, in principle, a way to follow it as it appeared. Inc quotes She Writes Press publisher Brooke Warner on the appeal of that model: “Substack gives you a connection to your readers that is impossible with books, where people can comment in real time.” A direct-to-reader route is not the same as evidence that the format caused the novel’s critical response, and Scott’s experience should not be treated as typical for writers seeking readers or income.
Inc also quotes publishing industry expert Jane Friedman: “There’s nothing to be learned here if you’re an ordinary writer.” Her point is that Substack still requires promotion and marketing; it does not guarantee an audience or earnings. A Substack spokesperson told Inc, “We want to give people the tools and flexibility to publish on their own terms, without needing an invitation or permission from us.” These comments describe the platform and publishing trade-offs, not Scott’s reason for choosing it, which the available coverage does not establish.

Scott’s earlier novels
The Testing of Luther Albright (2005) and Traps (2013) are the two novels that preceded Last Days in Two Nations. They provide career context for her return to fiction, but neither their reception nor their publishing route settles how to interpret the 2026 novel.
