The “worst issue” in the original headline was Apple’s decision to sell entry-level MacBooks with just 8GB of unified memory—not the keyboard, webcam, notch, ports, or battery. Apple’s mainstream MacBook Air and MacBook Pro lines have since moved away from the headline-making 8GB configurations, but the fix is not universal: the budget MacBook Neo and refurbished older machines still require a model-by-model check.
For most buyers planning to keep a MacBook for several years, 16GB is the safer starting point. Heavy creative, development, virtual-machine, and local-AI workloads need more, and Apple-silicon memory generally cannot be upgraded after purchase.
What problem was Apple supposed to fix?
The complaint was simple: Apple charged entry-level prices for laptops configured with 8GB of unified memory while many comparable Windows laptops offered 16GB. BGR’s August 27, 2024 report said Apple might change that approach after reports that M4 systems were being tested with 16GB or 32GB of memory.
Apple had argued that its silicon, memory compression, and macOS efficiency made 8GB more comparable with a larger capacity on other platforms. That is Apple’s position, not a universal conversion rule: the amount of memory available still limits how many demanding tasks can remain active at once.

Why unified memory matters
Apple silicon uses one shared memory pool for the CPU, GPU, image and video processing, applications, browser tabs, and on-device features such as Apple Intelligence. A graphics-heavy application therefore competes for the same pool used by macOS and ordinary programs.
- 8GB can be adequate: Web browsing, email, documents, streaming, and light schoolwork are reasonable workloads, especially at a substantial discount.
- Memory pressure appears sooner: Many browser tabs, video calls, photo editors, development tools, or large spreadsheets can force compression or swapping.
- Storage is not RAM: An SSD or cloud account holds files; it does not provide equivalent working memory for active applications.
More memory does not automatically make every task faster. Its main benefit is headroom: fewer slowdowns when the workload exceeds the available pool, and more flexibility as applications and operating systems grow.

What changed between 2024 and 2026?
Mainstream Air and Pro models
Apple’s current mainstream laptop families are the M5 MacBook Air, available in 13-inch and 15-inch sizes, and the M5 Pro/Max MacBook Pro, available in 14-inch and 16-inch sizes. Apple’s 2026 availability announcement reflects that lineup shift, but the newsroom copy does not provide every configuration’s memory tier. Check the configuration shown for your country before ordering.

MacBook Neo is a separate budget tier
Apple introduced MacBook Neo on March 4, 2026, with availability beginning March 11. It starts at $599 in the United States, or $499 with the listed education price, and uses an A18 Pro chip in a fanless 13-inch laptop. Apple claims up to 16 hours of battery life. The announcement does not state the base memory capacity, so do not assume that Neo has the same memory policy as Air or Pro; verify the live product listing.

Older and refurbished machines
Retailers and Apple’s refurbished store may still offer 8GB M1, M2, or M3 MacBooks. The old limitation can therefore reappear even if the newest mainstream models have moved on. Check memory, battery condition, warranty, return terms, and the exact chip before paying.

How much memory should you choose?
| User and workload | Sensible target | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Email, documents, streaming, light browsing | 8GB may suffice if heavily discounted | Light multitasking places fewer demands on memory |
| Student with many tabs and productivity apps | 16GB | More headroom for multitasking and longer ownership |
| Developer, photographer, musician, or power user | 16–24GB | IDE projects, containers, RAW files, and audio sessions can grow quickly |
| Video editor, 3D artist, engineer, or local-AI user | 24–48GB or more | Large media, models, and engineering projects consume substantial memory |
| Virtual machines or several development environments | 32GB or more | Guest systems and containers share memory with macOS |
These are buying guidelines, not performance guarantees. Application behavior, swap activity, storage speed, and project size all affect the result.

Assume an Apple-silicon MacBook’s unified memory is fixed at purchase. An external SSD can add file space for media libraries and backups, but it cannot turn an 8GB machine into a 16GB machine. Choose memory first, then choose storage for the files you keep locally.

Buy now when
- You need a laptop immediately and the selected Air or Pro configuration provides enough memory.
- You are replacing an Intel Mac or an 8GB machine and can find a good current or refurbished price.
- You do not need the uncertain features of a future redesign.
Wait when
- You specifically want a rumored OLED display, thinner chassis, or touchscreen.
- You are considering a high-end 14-inch or 16-inch Pro and can wait into 2027.
- A major redesign matters more to you than launch certainty and price.
What is the rumored next MacBook Pro?
Separate reports describe a future high-end MacBook Pro with an OLED display, thinner and lighter body, touchscreen support, and a hole-punch camera that could replace the notch. A pill-shaped Dynamic Island has also been reported. The timing is described as late 2026 to early 2027, with early 2027 reportedly more likely because of memory-chip supply constraints.
These are reports, not Apple-confirmed specifications. Apple has not confirmed the final name, chip branding, memory tiers, price, display, touchscreen, Dynamic Island, or release date.
MacRumors’ report on the possible redesign and earlier touchscreen and Dynamic Island reporting.
That rumored notch change is a different story from the 8GB controversy. The original headline concerned memory capacity; the possible OLED redesign concerns the chassis and display.
A practical buying order
- Choose memory first. Select a capacity that matches your workload and expected ownership period.
- Choose local storage second. Add capacity for media and project files, or plan for an external SSD.
- Compare new, refurbished, and discounted previous-generation models. Confirm battery, warranty, memory, and return terms.
- Consider protection based on risk. AppleCare+ terms and prices vary by model and region; check Apple’s Mac coverage page.
- Use external storage only for files. Apple, Samsung, and SanDisk offer portable SSDs, but none substitutes for unified memory: Apple storage, Samsung portable SSDs, and SanDisk portable SSDs.
- Protect important data. Consider iCloud+ or Backblaze alongside a local backup.
Bottom line
Apple appears to have substantially reduced the 8GB problem in its mainstream MacBook Air and MacBook Pro generations, but it has not become safe to treat every MacBook as identical. The $599 MacBook Neo, refurbished stock, and older models must be checked individually. For most buyers who multitask and want several years of use, 16GB is the safer minimum; demanding users should buy more at checkout. Wait for the rumored OLED Pro only if its possible redesign matters more than certainty, current availability, and potentially higher pricing.
