Buy the current MacBook Pro if you need a dependable, fully specified laptop before the end of 2026. The M5 generation is already shipping, with published prices, ports, memory limits, display specifications and battery claims. Wait for the rumored OLED MacBook Pro only if your existing Mac still does everything you need and a touchscreen or OLED contrast is important enough to justify an unknown price, release date and first-generation design.
As of October 16, 2026, Apple has not announced an OLED MacBook Pro. Reports point to a possible late-October announcement, but the timing and specifications can change. That makes this a decision about certainty versus potentially meaningful display and input changes, not a simple choice between two products you can already compare.

What you can buy today
Apple announced 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models with M5 Pro and M5 Max chips on March 3, 2026. The range runs macOS Tahoe and includes Liquid Retina XDR displays, Thunderbolt 5, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and a 12MP Center Stage camera. Apple rates the line for up to 24 hours of battery life, although that is an “up to” figure from Apple rather than a guarantee for every configuration or workload.

Apple’s senior vice president of Hardware Engineering, John Ternus, said the M5 Pro and M5 Max MacBook Pro were “now up to 4x faster than the previous generation.” Apple’s testing in January and February 2026 also reported up to four times the AI performance of the previous generation and up to eight times that of M1 models. Those are Apple test results, so treat them as an indication of the company’s target workloads rather than a universal application benchmark.
What the rumored OLED model could change
OLED is not a confirmed MacBook Pro specification yet. Bloomberg reported on October 9, 2026 that Apple was planning a launch on or around Tuesday, October 27, for its first touch-screen MacBook. The same report said late-October announcements could include 14-inch MacBook Pro and iMac models with M6 chips. The report cited unnamed people familiar with Apple’s plans, and Apple had not announced the products at that point.
Reporting summarized by MacRumors described 14-inch and 16-inch OLED MacBook Pro models with touch support, possibly arriving in October or November 2026, and said Apple was testing them with macOS 27.2. A later report revised an earlier thinness expectation: the new machines were expected to be significantly lighter rather than significantly thinner. These details remain reports, not published specifications.
There is no reliable public price, final product name, exact chip configuration, battery rating or shipping date for an OLED MacBook Pro. Do not treat any of those as settled until Apple publishes them. A first-generation design could also carry a premium over the current range.

Buy now if one of these situations applies
You need a laptop for work, school or a move
If your current computer is failing, your workload is blocked or you must travel with a reliable machine, waiting for an unannounced product creates a risk that no display improvement can remove. The current 14-inch M5 gives you a known starting price and storage allocation, while M5 Pro and M5 Max let you select a documented memory ceiling and Thunderbolt 5 connectivity.
Your work depends on sustained performance
Video editing, software builds, large code projects, 3D work and local AI workloads benefit from choosing a chip and memory configuration today rather than guessing what a future model will offer. M5 Pro’s 64GB ceiling and M5 Max’s 128GB ceiling are especially relevant when your applications regularly approach the limits of a lower-memory system.
You need specific ports or displays now
M5 Pro and M5 Max models are documented with three Thunderbolt 5 ports. That gives you a firm basis for planning docks, fast storage and professional peripherals. Check the exact configuration before ordering, particularly if you are considering the standard M5 model rather than a Pro or Max system.

You want a predictable budget
The $1,699 U.S. starting price for the 14-inch M5 includes 1TB storage. You can calculate the cost of a higher-memory or larger-storage configuration from Apple’s current options. An OLED model has no published price, so waiting may mean paying more than your planned budget or accepting a smaller configuration to stay within it.

Wait if your current Mac is still comfortably adequate
OLED contrast is your main reason to upgrade
OLED can turn individual pixels off for very deep blacks, which may make dark interfaces, HDR video and high-contrast imagery look different from the current Liquid Retina XDR panel. Whether that difference matters depends on your work and viewing habits. If you mostly write, browse, manage email or use office software, the existing display may already satisfy you.
You specifically want touch input
A touchscreen would change how you interact with a MacBook, but touch support is only reported at this stage. Do not postpone an essential purchase on the assumption that a touch model will ship on a particular date. Wait only when your current Mac can cover the interim and touch is a genuine priority rather than a curiosity.
You prefer a lighter machine
Recent reporting points to a significantly lighter redesign rather than a significantly thinner one. That distinction matters: a lighter computer could improve travel comfort without changing how much space it occupies in a bag. The amount of weight saved, chassis dimensions and impact on battery life have not been published.

The first OLED, touch-enabled MacBook Pro would introduce a new display and input design. Early buyers may encounter a higher price, limited configuration choices or software behavior that becomes clearer after launch. Waiting makes sense when you can accept those trade-offs in exchange for being among the first to use the new hardware.

How to decide based on urgency
- Set a hard date. Decide when you must have a working laptop. If that date is before Apple confirms availability and delivery for the OLED model, choose a current MacBook Pro.
- List non-negotiable requirements. Write down the memory, storage, ports, display size and battery expectations your work requires. Match those against the published M5 configurations, not against rumored specifications.
- Separate needs from preferences. A failing battery, insufficient memory or incompatible port is a need. OLED contrast, touch and a lighter chassis are preferences unless your job depends on them.
- Set a maximum price. Include memory and storage upgrades in the current model’s cost. Because the OLED price is unknown, decide how much uncertainty you can tolerate above that limit.
- Choose a trigger for waiting. If you wait, use Apple’s announcement and specification pages as the trigger to reassess. Do not place an order from a rumor alone.
Choosing the current configuration
14-inch M5
The 14-inch M5 is the clearest choice for buyers who want the lowest current entry price and a compact professional laptop. Its $1,699 U.S. starting configuration includes 1TB storage. It is suitable when your applications do not require the higher memory ceilings or documented three-port Thunderbolt 5 arrangement associated with M5 Pro and M5 Max.
M5 Pro
M5 Pro is the middle ground for demanding professional work. Apple specifies up to 64GB unified memory, and M5 Pro models include three Thunderbolt 5 ports. Choose it when you routinely compile, render, edit or run multiple heavy applications and the standard M5 configuration would leave too little headroom.
M5 Max
M5 Max is aimed at the heaviest workloads in this generation. It supports up to 128GB unified memory and three Thunderbolt 5 ports. The extra memory capacity is valuable for large media projects, complex scenes, extensive datasets and other tasks that would otherwise force frequent swapping or project splitting.
16-inch models
The 16-inch M5 Pro and M5 Max configurations start at 1TB or 2TB depending on the chip and can be configured up to 8TB. Select this size when the larger workspace and internal storage are more important than carrying the smallest system. The larger chassis may also be preferable for long sessions at a desk, but Apple’s published battery claim remains an “up to 24 hours” figure rather than a promise for every 16-inch configuration.

What to monitor if you decide to wait
- Apple’s announcement: Confirm whether a product exists, its exact name, screen sizes, chips and release date.
- Complete technical specifications: Look for memory and storage ceilings, port counts, external-display support, camera details and battery testing conditions.
- Actual ordering and shipping: An announcement date is not the same as inventory or delivery. Wait for a stated order date and region-specific availability.
- Configuration pricing: Compare an OLED model with the M5 configuration you would otherwise buy, including memory and storage upgrades.
- Software support: Check which macOS version ships and whether touch behavior is supported in the applications you use.
Common mistakes to avoid
Treating a reported launch date as a guarantee
The October 27 date came from a report published October 9, not from an Apple product announcement. The window could slip, and a launch in one region may not mean immediate stock elsewhere.
Assuming the rumored M6 performance
An M6 chip was mentioned in reporting about a possible 14-inch model, but Apple has not published its specifications or benchmark results. Use the documented M5 performance and memory options when making a purchase decision today.
Assuming “lighter” means “thinner”
Later reporting specifically revised the earlier thinness expectation. Until Apple publishes dimensions and weight, do not buy a case or reorganize a travel setup around an unverified size.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsBuying less memory to afford an unknown future model
Unified memory is configured at purchase. If your current workload needs more capacity, delaying or compromising today can cost more time than a future display saves. Select the memory your applications require now.
Bottom line for October 2026
The current M5 MacBook Pro is already a complete, high-end laptop with a published $1,699 U.S. starting price for the 14-inch model, 1TB storage at that entry point, Liquid Retina XDR, modern wireless standards and a documented path to M5 Pro or M5 Max performance. Buy it when timing, ports, memory or budget certainty matters.
Wait through the reported late-October window only when your existing Mac remains reliable and OLED contrast, touch input or a lighter redesign is the specific upgrade you want. Revisit the decision after Apple publishes the product’s price, configurations, battery rating and shipping date; until then, those details are unknown rather than purchasing facts.
