Use automatic brightness, keep the screen no brighter than necessary, turn the display off quickly when you step away, and use macOS battery-saving controls. Treat these as risk-reduction measures rather than a guarantee against image retention: Apple publishes no MacBook Pro-specific percentage reduction in burn-in risk and no setting that permanently prevents it.
What these settings can—and cannot—prevent
Current MacBook Pro models use Liquid Retina XDR displays with mini-LED backlighting. A static toolbar, window, or menu left on screen for long periods can contribute to image persistence risk, while high brightness and heat increase power use. Reducing brightness and unattended screen-on time addresses both concerns.

Image persistence is not the same as a permanently damaged panel. A faint residual image that disappears after changing content or sleeping the Mac can be temporary. Apple does not promise that a Liquid Retina XDR display cannot retain an image, nor does it publish a MacBook Pro-specific burn-in percentage or a guaranteed preventive setting. The controls below therefore reduce exposure and energy demand; they do not make static content risk-free.

Apple warns that disabling auto-brightness may affect battery life, energy consumption, and long-term display performance. If the control is missing, the MacBook Pro model or macOS release may manage brightness differently; use the manual slider instead of assuming a hidden automatic mode is active.
When to override it
For color-critical work, a controlled manual level can make repeated edits more consistent because ambient light changes no longer move the display luminance. Set the lowest level that lets you judge detail accurately, then restore automatic brightness when the job is finished. This is a workflow choice, not evidence that manual brightness protects the panel better.
2. Set the lowest comfortable manual brightness
Use the brightness keys or the slider in System Settings > Displays. Apple recommends dimming the display to conserve energy. Lower output also reduces the time pixels and backlight components spend at high intensity.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- For ordinary writing, browsing, and coding, start around the middle of the range and lower it until text remains comfortable.
- In a dark room, reduce brightness further rather than compensating with a very bright white interface.
- For photography, video, or design, choose a level that matches your calibrated workflow; do not dim so far that you misjudge shadows or highlights.
- After connecting or disconnecting an external display, check the MacBook Pro slider again because perceived brightness can change with room lighting.
There is no Apple-published “safe” brightness percentage. The useful rule is to avoid maximum brightness unless the room or content genuinely requires it.
3. Turn the display off while you are away
Go to Apple menu > System Settings > Lock Screen. Set both Turn display off on battery when inactive and Turn display off on power adapter when inactive to a reasonably short interval. A display-off timer removes static interface elements when the Mac is unattended, unlike merely locking the session while leaving the panel lit.

Choosing an interval
- Mobile work: Choose a short interval, such as a few minutes, to save battery and eliminate unattended static content.
- Desk work: Use a longer interval if frequent interruptions make a short timeout disruptive, but keep it short enough that an abandoned document is not displayed for hours.
- Presentations or monitoring: Temporarily extend the interval only when the screen must remain visible, then restore your normal value.
Use a hot corner, a display-sleep keyboard shortcut, or simply close the lid when you know you are leaving. Those actions are more reliable than expecting a long timeout to protect the panel.
4. Configure Battery settings that lower display and graphics demand
Open System Settings > Battery. The exact controls depend on the MacBook Pro model and macOS version, but Apple documents the following options as energy-saving measures.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchLow Power Mode
Enable Low Power Mode when running on battery if you can accept reduced peak performance. macOS limits or defers some background and graphics activity, which can reduce total power draw. It does not replace a display timeout and does not itself guarantee protection from image persistence.
Slightly dim the display on battery
Turn on Slightly dim the display on battery. macOS lowers display output automatically when the charger is disconnected, reducing battery consumption without requiring you to adjust the slider every time.
Automatic graphics switching
On supported dual-GPU MacBook Pro models, keep Automatic graphics switching enabled. The Mac can use the more efficient graphics processor for light tasks and switch to the higher-power processor only when needed. This setting can reduce system energy use, although demanding applications may still force discrete graphics.

Optimised Battery Charging
Enable Optimised Battery Charging. It reduces the amount of time the battery remains fully charged by learning your routine and delaying the final charge when appropriate. This protects battery lifespan rather than the display directly, but a healthier battery makes it easier to use lower-power display settings away from an outlet.
5. Handle HDR brightness and heat deliberately
Apple’s 2026 specifications list current MacBook Pro Liquid Retina XDR displays at up to 1,600 nits peak HDR brightness and 1,000 nits sustained full-screen brightness. Those figures describe capability under specified conditions, not a recommended everyday setting. Sustained HDR windows at high luminance can increase heat and power use.
When the screen limits brightness
If macOS temporarily limits brightness during sustained HDR playback or editing, Apple’s 2025 support guidance advises:
- Close or hide HDR windows and other bright HDR content.
- Move the Mac to a cooler environment and lower the room temperature if practical.
- Put the Mac to sleep for 5–10 minutes so the display can cool.
Do not interpret a temporary limit as proof of permanent panel damage. It is a thermal-management response. Keeping the room cooler and avoiding unnecessary full-screen HDR reduces the frequency of that response and cuts energy demand.
Should HDR stay on all day?
Leave HDR enabled when you are grading HDR video, reviewing HDR photography, or watching HDR material where highlight detail matters. For documents, web pages, messaging, and standard desktop work, SDR is usually sufficient and avoids driving the display at HDR levels continuously. The practical protection is to use HDR for HDR content, not to force every window into the brightest mode.

6. Optimise video playback on battery
In System Settings > Battery, enable Optimise video streaming while on battery when available. Apple says this can play HDR video in SDR on battery, which requires less energy. HDR quality and peak highlights may be reduced, so disable the option for battery-powered HDR review or mastering work.
This control affects supported streaming and playback scenarios; it does not convert every application or every local file. Check the result with your normal video app before relying on it for a color-critical decision.
7. Understand True Tone and ProMotion
True Tone
True Tone changes color temperature to match ambient light. It is primarily a viewing-comfort and color-consistency choice. Apple does not present it as a burn-in control. Keep it enabled for general work if the warmer or cooler appearance is comfortable; turn it off when you need a fixed color environment.
ProMotion
ProMotion changes refresh rate, up to 120Hz on supported MacBook Pro models, to improve scrolling and motion quality. Apple has not published a claim that selecting a particular fixed refresh rate prevents image persistence. Use the default adaptive behavior unless an application or color workflow requires another rate. Lowering refresh rate may reduce some graphics activity, but it is not a substitute for dimming or display sleep.

A practical setup sequence
- Open System Settings > Displays and enable Automatically adjust brightness if available.
- Set brightness to the lowest level that keeps text and image detail comfortable.
- Open System Settings > Lock Screen and shorten both battery and power-adapter display-off timers.
- Open System Settings > Battery; enable Low Power Mode for battery use, Slightly dim the display on battery, Optimised Battery Charging, and Automatic graphics switching on supported models.
- Enable Optimise video streaming while on battery if reduced HDR quality is acceptable.
- Keep HDR for HDR-specific work; use SDR for ordinary desktop activity.
- When leaving the Mac, invoke display sleep or close the lid instead of relying only on a long timeout.
Color-critical and high-brightness workflows
Editors, photographers, and developers who need stable visual conditions should separate protection from calibration. Use a consistent room light, disable True Tone during critical evaluation, and choose a repeatable manual brightness. Keep the display-off timer long enough to avoid interruptions during an active review, but use display sleep whenever the workstation is genuinely unattended.
Best Value
For HDR mastering, allow the panel to reach the brightness required by the specification of the content, then hide HDR windows when they are not being evaluated. If brightness limiting occurs, follow the cooling steps rather than repeatedly forcing the slider higher.
What to do if you notice a residual image
First, test for temporary persistence
- Change to varied full-screen content with no fixed toolbar or window.
- Reduce brightness to a comfortable level.
- Put the Mac to sleep for several minutes, then check again.
- Restart macOS if the image remains visible across normal desktop changes.
Temporary persistence that fades is different from a persistent defect. Avoid “pixel refresher” utilities or extreme brightness cycles that Apple has not identified as a MacBook Pro remedy.
Escalate a persistent problem
If a residual image remains after varied content, sleep, and a restart, document when it appears and contact Apple Support or an Apple-certified service provider. AppleCare+ coverage and repair availability vary by country and plan, so confirm the terms for your region before authorising service.
Battery expectations and model differences
Battery life varies with chip, screen size, brightness, wireless activity, applications, and temperature. Apple rates one current 16-inch MacBook Pro configuration for up to 24 hours of video streaming, measured under Apple’s stated brightness, Wi-Fi, and preproduction conditions. That is a laboratory-style maximum for that configuration, not a promise for every model or workload. Bright HDR editing, sustained graphics rendering, and a high manual brightness can produce substantially shorter runtime.
Menu names and availability also vary by macOS release and MacBook Pro model. If a setting in this guide is absent, do not substitute an unrelated utility: use the controls your Mac exposes, keep brightness reasonable, and rely on display sleep for unattended periods.
