To set up parental controls on a MacBook Neo, first give your child a separate standard user account and Apple Account. Then configure Screen Time either from a parent’s device through Family Sharing or directly while signed in to the child’s Mac account. The available defaults and remote-management features can vary by age, region, and macOS version, so check the settings on the device your child will use.
Start with a separate child account
Apple recommends that a child use their own user account and Apple Account, even when sharing a Mac with the family. Separate accounts keep the child’s apps and information apart from the parent’s. On a new MacBook Neo, follow Setup Assistant to create a user account; it can also guide you through connecting to Wi-Fi, creating a Child Account if needed, and setting up parental controls. Some parts of setup require an internet connection, and the Mac may need an update during initial setup. See Apple’s MacBook Neo setup guide and child-Mac setup guidance.

Add a child account to a Mac the family already shares
- Sign in to an administrator account and open System Settings > Users & Groups.
- Select Add User and authenticate if prompted.
- Choose Standard for the new account, then create it.
- Sign in to the child’s new account and use the child’s Apple Account information when prompted—not the parent’s.
- When both parent and child use the Mac, log out of the child’s account when finished so the next person starts in their own account.
Apple’s guide is titled Set up a Mac for your kid. (Use the device’s displayed labels if they differ from these instructions.)

Manage Screen Time through Family Sharing
- On the parent’s Mac, open System Settings > Screen Time.
- Choose the child from the Family Member menu.
- Select Set Up Screen Time For Your Child and follow the prompts.
- Review the offered setup choices, which can include content restrictions, Communication Safety, Screen Distance, App & Website Activity, time away from screens, and a four-digit Screen Time passcode.
If the Family Member menu is missing, check that the parent is signed in to an Apple Account and that Family Sharing is set up. Apple describes Family Sharing as the most flexible and convenient way to manage a child’s Screen Time. Follow its Mac Screen Time setup guide for the current prompts.

Set Screen Time up on the child’s Mac account
If you are not using Family Sharing, sign in to the child’s Mac account and set up Screen Time there. This lets you configure controls on the child’s Mac without managing them from a parent’s device.
Choose controls by what you need to manage
Screen Time groups its controls by purpose. Start with the issue you want to address, then review the corresponding setting in the child’s account or family controls.

Apple says Content & Privacy Restrictions can allow or block sensitive or explicit content in Music, Apple TV, Books, and other apps, as well as built-in apps and features such as Camera and AirDrop. See Apple’s Mac restrictions guide. Choose limits that fit your child and household; Apple’s settings describe available controls, not a one-size-fits-all profile.

Defaults depend on age and location
Apple says Communication Safety and Screen Distance are on by default for children under 13, and the Web Content Filter blocks adult content. Apple also notes that the under-13 threshold varies by country or region. These are documented defaults, not a substitute for reviewing the child’s actual settings: check what is enabled on the device and adjust it as needed.

Family-wide controls may require version 27 or later
Apple says all devices in a Family Sharing group need version 27 or later to use the latest Screen Time features for managing a child across the family. If a family member’s device cannot update, the previous Screen Time and parental-controls experience remains available, or you can adjust controls directly on the child’s device. See Apple’s Kids and Families guide for the version requirement and update options.

Screen Time provides settings for activity, schedules, app and website limits, communication, content, purchases, downloads, privacy, and access to the controls themselves. Which settings you can manage remotely depends on Family Sharing and the software versions on family devices; setup defaults also vary by age and region. These controls do not guarantee a child’s safety or replace supervision and family conversations.
