MacBook Air vs. Windows ultrabook: what’s the difference in 2026?

The short answer: a MacBook Air is a specific Apple laptop line running macOS, while “Windows ultrabook” is a broad category covering thin, light Windows laptops from many manufacturers. The operating system, app compatibility and ecosystem usually matter more than the label. Apple’s current Air range is the M5 MacBook Air in 13-inch and 15-inch sizes; a fair Windows comparison requires naming one exact model and configuration.

Choose the Air when your required software and peripherals work well with macOS and you value Apple’s hardware, battery estimates and ecosystem. Choose a Windows ultrabook when you need Windows-only software, a particular enterprise or school setup, broader hardware choice, or a Windows-specific accessory and gaming ecosystem. Neither category is a universal winner.

What the two terms actually describe

MacBook Air is one defined product family

MacBook Air identifies Apple hardware with Apple-designed processors and macOS. Apple’s current specification page lists M5 models with 13-inch and 15-inch screens. Because the family has a defined operating system, processor architecture and industrial design, published specifications provide a useful baseline—provided you use the current M5 generation and the exact memory and storage configuration you intend to buy.

Windows ultrabook is a buying category, not a specification

“Ultrabook” is commonly used for portable Windows notebooks, but it does not identify one manufacturer, processor, screen, port layout, battery size or price. A Windows ultrabook may use an Intel, AMD or Arm processor; offer a matte or glossy display; weigh substantially more or less than another model; and include anything from a minimal USB-C selection to a much broader set of ports. Treat the phrase as a request for a class of products, not as a single rival to the MacBook Air.

Operating system and app compatibility come first

macOS versus Windows changes everyday work

The largest practical difference is not thickness or benchmark speed; it is the operating system. macOS and Windows have different system settings, file-management conventions, security controls, update behavior, accessibility features and software catalogs. Your choice should start with the applications, services, peripherals and workflows you already use or must use.

  • List every essential application for work or school, including browser extensions, plug-ins and specialist utilities.
  • Check whether your organization requires Windows device management, a Windows-only client, a particular VPN, or a driver that exists only for Windows.
  • Check creative, engineering, scientific and accessibility software by exact version, not merely by product name.
  • Confirm that printers, scanners, audio interfaces, docks, security keys and other accessories have drivers for the operating system and processor architecture you plan to buy.

A MacBook Air can be an excellent everyday computer and still be the wrong purchase if one indispensable program or peripheral has no supported macOS version. The reverse is equally true for a Windows ultrabook.

What Windows on Arm changes

Some current Windows ultraportables use Arm processors rather than the traditional x86 designs. Microsoft Support says most Windows apps can run on Windows 11 Arm-based PCs. Native Arm applications generally deliver the best performance; Microsoft states, “Apps rebuilt for Windows Arm-based PCs have the best performance.” Windows 11 version 24H2 includes Prism emulation for applications that were not built for Arm.

Microsoft lists native Arm versions or support examples including Microsoft 365 applications, Chrome, Slack, Spotify, Blender, Affinity Suite and DaVinci Resolve. These examples do not guarantee that every release, plug-in or workflow will work. Check the developer’s compatibility notes for the version you need.

Drivers and specialist software can still decide the purchase

Windows on Arm requires a built-in or vendor-provided Arm64 driver for hardware. Microsoft identifies possible limitations involving some games that use anti-cheat drivers, certain assistive technologies, applications that customize Windows and some third-party antivirus software. If your work depends on a specialist driver or security tool, obtain confirmation from its maker before buying an Arm-based Windows laptop.

Current MacBook Air hardware baseline

Apple’s current specification page lists the M5 MacBook Air in two screen sizes. The figures below describe Apple’s listed configuration and are not a substitute for checking the exact regional build you will order.

Specification 13-inch MacBook Air M5 15-inch MacBook Air M5
Display size 13.6 inches diagonally 15.3 inches diagonally
Listed brightness 500 nits Not stated in the supplied specification summary
Listed weight 2.7 pounds 3.3 pounds
Baseline memory and storage 16GB unified memory and 512GB SSD in the listed configuration Configuration varies; check the selected build
Higher configurations Higher memory and storage options are available Higher memory and storage options are available
Ports listed for the 13-inch model Two Thunderbolt 4 USB-C ports, MagSafe 3, 3.5 mm headphone jack Check the exact model specification

Battery life: why advertised hours do not produce a winner

Apple’s current estimates

Apple lists the current MacBook Air at up to 18 hours of video streaming and up to 15 hours of wireless web. These are Apple estimates for its current Air, not a controlled head-to-head result against a named Windows ultrabook.

What Apple’s earlier test notes tell you

Apple’s support document for the previous M4 generation describes a January 2025 test using pre-production 13-inch systems with an M4 10-core CPU and 8-core GPU, and 15-inch systems with an M4 10-core CPU and 10-core GPU. Each system had 16GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD. Wireless-web testing browsed 25 popular websites over Wi-Fi; video testing streamed 1080p content in Safari over Wi-Fi. Apple also fixed brightness and keyboard-backlight settings and warned that actual battery life varies with use and configuration. That methodology explains how Apple produced the M4 figures; it is not an M5 test result.

Microsoft’s Copilot+ claims

In an April 25, 2025 Windows Experience Blog post, Microsoft claimed that Copilot+ PCs offered up to 22 hours of video playback and up to 15 hours of web browsing, and that top-performing devices were up to 13% faster than the MacBook Air M4. Those are Microsoft’s claims for a class of Copilot+ PCs and a comparison with the M4 generation. They are not a general Windows-ultrabook result and are not a matched test against the current M5 Air.

Displays, size and ports

Screen choice

The Air gives you a 13.6-inch or 15.3-inch display choice within one family. A Windows ultrabook may offer different aspect ratios, refresh rates, panel technologies, resolutions and brightness levels even within one product line. Compare the panel specification for the exact model, especially if you work outdoors, edit photos or video, use scaling-heavy applications, or want a high-refresh display.

Port planning

Apple lists two Thunderbolt 4 USB-C ports, a MagSafe 3 charging connector and a 3.5 mm headphone jack for the 13-inch Air. Two USB-C ports can be sufficient for charging and one accessory, but a desk with a monitor, storage drive, wired network, card reader and other equipment may require a hub or dock. Select that accessory only after counting your displays, power delivery, data speeds and connectors; the available specifications do not verify any particular hub model.

Windows ultrabooks differ widely here. One model may include USB-A, HDMI, a microSD slot or a dedicated audio jack; another may be nearly all USB-C. A broader port selection can reduce adapters, while a thinner design with fewer ports may be easier to carry. Check whether every port supports the speed, display output and charging mode your setup needs.

External displays

Apple lists support for up to two external displays on the 13-inch Air, subject to specified display modes and resolutions. Windows support depends on the laptop’s processor, graphics hardware, USB-C or Thunderbolt implementation, dock and driver. Verify the exact maximum number of displays and their supported resolutions before buying for a multi-monitor desk.

Performance and processor architecture

The Air’s M5 processor and a Windows laptop’s processor may use different architectures, graphics implementations and power limits. A processor name alone does not predict performance in your applications. Browser work, office documents and video playback may feel fast on many modern systems; sustained compiling, 3D work, local media encoding, virtual machines or specialist calculations can expose larger differences.

Compare like-for-like memory and storage. Apple’s listed 13-inch baseline is 16GB of unified memory and a 512GB SSD, with higher options available. A Windows candidate with less memory or a smaller SSD is not an equivalent configuration, even if its advertised processor tier sounds similar. Conversely, a Windows model with more memory, a higher-power processor or discrete graphics may be better suited to a demanding workload but could weigh more and use more battery.

For Arm-based Windows systems, determine whether your key applications run natively or through Prism emulation. Native Arm builds generally offer the best performance, while an emulated application can still be usable but may behave differently with plug-ins, drivers or demanding workloads.

Which choice fits common users?

School and general productivity

For documents, web research, email, video meetings and note-taking, both categories can work well. Choose based on the school’s required applications, file-sharing conventions, exam software, printers and support policy. The 13-inch Air is easier to carry than the 15-inch model; the 15-inch screen can reduce window switching for users who spend long sessions at the laptop.

Business and managed work

Ask your employer whether its identity, device-management, security and remote-access systems support macOS. Some organizations standardize on Windows and provide help-desk procedures or peripherals accordingly. Others support both platforms. Obtain an explicit answer before purchase rather than assuming a browser-based service makes the systems interchangeable.

Creative work

Check the exact application, plug-ins, color-management tools, external drives and cameras you use. Microsoft lists native Arm examples such as Blender, Affinity Suite and DaVinci Resolve, but a listed application does not prove that every plug-in, codec or hardware workflow is supported. Compare display characteristics, sustained performance, memory capacity and external-storage needs, not only the laptop’s thickness.

Gaming

Windows generally offers the broader PC-game ecosystem, but an Arm-based Windows laptop may encounter limitations with games that rely on anti-cheat drivers. Check each important game and anti-cheat system. The MacBook Air is not a universal substitute for a Windows gaming notebook; evaluate the actual game catalog and graphics requirements you care about.

Accessibility and specialist peripherals

Confirm support for screen readers, alternative input devices, scanners, audio hardware, security keys and other assistive or professional equipment. Microsoft specifically notes possible Arm limitations for some assistive technologies, making a driver and vendor check essential for an Arm-based Windows purchase.

How to compare a specific Windows ultrabook with the Air

Once you have a named Windows model, use this sequence instead of comparing category slogans:

  1. Record the exact build. Write down processor model and architecture, memory, SSD capacity, display panel and operating-system edition.
  2. Check required software. Verify every essential application, plug-in and service on macOS or Windows. For Windows on Arm, identify native Arm support or Prism emulation.
  3. Verify peripherals. Confirm Arm64 or x86 driver availability for docks, printers, scanners, audio devices, security keys and accessibility hardware.
  4. Match memory and storage. Compare the Air’s selected unified-memory and SSD configuration with the Windows laptop’s installed capacity, not only its entry-level price.
  5. Compare displays. Check diagonal size, aspect ratio, resolution, panel type, brightness, refresh rate and scaling behavior.
  6. Count ports and displays. Map every monitor, drive, network adapter, card reader and headset to a physical port. Confirm external-display limits and required dock standards.
  7. Compare carry weight. Include the charger and any adapter you would routinely carry.
  8. Interpret battery claims cautiously. Record who measured the figure, the workload, brightness, wireless conditions and configuration. Do not place Apple’s estimate beside Microsoft’s claim as though they were one laboratory test.
  9. Check regional support. Confirm warranty terms, keyboard layout, service availability and the exact configuration sold in your country.
  10. Test the highest-risk workflow. Before the return period ends, install or connect the one application or peripheral that would be most expensive to replace.

Common buying mistakes and how to avoid them

  • Comparing a category with a product: replace “Windows ultrabook” with a named model and configuration.
  • Using an old Air review: current Apple specifications describe M5 13-inch and 15-inch models; older M4 figures and tests should be labeled as older generation information.
  • Treating advertised battery hours as lab results: keep Apple and Microsoft figures attributed and preserve their test-generation qualifications.
  • Assuming Windows software automatically works on Arm: check native Arm support, Prism behavior, plug-ins and drivers.
  • Ignoring ports until after purchase: list every device you connect and verify port speed, display output and charging requirements.
  • Comparing unequal configurations: match memory, storage, display class and, where relevant, graphics capability before judging value or performance.
  • Assuming a browser solves compatibility: desktop clients, security modules, local plug-ins and peripherals can still require a specific operating system or driver.

A practical decision framework

If your priority is… Lean toward… Confirm before buying
Apple ecosystem and macOS workflow MacBook Air Every required app, plug-in and peripheral has macOS support
Windows-only business, school or engineering software Windows ultrabook Exact processor architecture, edition, drivers and organizational support
Smallest everyday carry 13-inch Air or a comparably light Windows model Complete travel weight, charger size and screen comfort
Larger built-in workspace 15-inch Air or a Windows model with a larger display Panel quality, weight and desk or bag fit
Many built-in connectors A Windows model with the required ports Port speeds, display output and charging support
Windows on Arm battery-focused design An Arm-based Windows model Native apps, Prism compatibility, Arm64 drivers and anti-cheat or accessibility limits
Two external monitors from a compact laptop Either category, only after model verification Supported resolutions, dock compatibility and operating-system limits

Bottom line

MacBook Air versus Windows ultrabook is not a one-to-one product comparison. The Air is a defined Apple-and-macOS platform with current M5 13-inch and 15-inch models; Windows ultrabook describes many different laptops. Start with your required software and peripherals, then compare a named Windows model against the matching Air configuration for display, ports, weight, memory, storage, external displays and battery methodology. Apple’s current Air estimates and Microsoft’s 2025 Copilot+ claims are useful context, but they do not prove a category-wide winner. The right choice is the laptop that runs your must-have workflow reliably with the fewest compromises.
