On a Mac, you can connect to a personal VPN through its official app or add a VPN configuration in System Settings using connection details from your provider or network administrator. Apple’s iCloud Private Relay is different: it protects certain Safari and network requests, not all traffic from every app. The right choice depends on whether you need a provider’s VPN, access to a work or school network, or privacy for supported Safari activity.
What a VPN does on a Mac
A VPN creates an encrypted connection, or tunnel, between your device and a VPN server or private network. Depending on how it is configured, traffic covered by that connection travels through the tunnel. A consumer VPN service and an employer’s private-network VPN can use similar platform capabilities but serve different purposes: one routes traffic through a provider’s service, while the other gives authorized users access to organizational resources.

Apple documents support for established VPN protocols across its device platforms, but its platform documentation does not certify consumer VPN providers or identify a best service. Use a consumer VPN app
- Choose a provider that supports your version of macOS and download its official Mac app using the provider’s current instructions.
- Install and open the app, then sign in or create an account as required by the provider.
- Choose a server or connection option in the app and connect. Follow the provider’s instructions for permissions, settings, and disconnecting.
The provider supplies the app’s server access and account details. Apple does not provide a consumer VPN service’s connection credentials.

Add a VPN configuration manually
Manual setup is appropriate when your provider or workplace administrator gives you the required configuration and authentication information. The exact options can depend on your macOS version and the VPN service.
- Open System Settings > Network.
- Click More, then choose Add VPN Configuration.
- Select the available VPN type and enter the server and authentication details supplied by your provider or administrator.
- Save the configuration, then connect from the VPN controls in System Settings. If a field or option is missing, ask the provider or administrator for instructions for your Mac and connection.
Apple documents built-in IKEv2/IPsec support. SSL-VPN requires an appropriate client app, and other legacy or organization-specific options vary by operating system and deployment. Apple’s deployment documentation describes the available approaches; it does not mean every provider supports every option.

Connect to a work or school VPN
Use the profile, app, or setup steps supplied by your organization rather than substituting a personal VPN configuration. In managed deployments, administrators can use configuration profiles, VPN On Demand rules, or per-app VPN. For example, a VPN On Demand rule can require a connection on an unfamiliar network, while per-app VPN sends only designated managed-app traffic through the organizational tunnel. Availability and configuration depend on the organization’s management setup. Apple’s deployment guide covers these options.

Is iCloud Private Relay a VPN?
No. iCloud Private Relay is an iCloud+ privacy service with a narrower scope than a general all-app VPN. Apple says it protects Safari browsing, DNS resolution queries, and certain unencrypted HTTP app traffic. Requests are routed through two separate relays operated by different entities: the design separates knowledge of a user’s IP address from knowledge of the destination website. Sites receive a coarse regional location rather than the user’s precise IP-based location. See Apple’s iCloud Private Relay & Privacy explanation.

Private Relay and a VPN do not independently tunnel the same connection at once. Apple’s developer documentation says an active VPN connection takes precedence over Private Relay for connections that would otherwise be protected by Private Relay. Apple’s Private Relay developer guidance describes this behavior.
How to choose a VPN for Mac
Start with the task, then verify the provider’s claims and setup requirements. Apple advises users to review a VPN provider’s privacy practices; platform compatibility alone says nothing about a provider’s data handling. Apple’s VPNs & Privacy guidance recommends checking how a service handles your data.

- Confirm Apple compatibility: Check that the provider currently supports your macOS version and offers a setup path you can use, such as its official Mac app or a supported manual configuration.
- Read the privacy policy: Determine what connection, device, and account information the provider says it collects and retains. Do not treat a privacy claim as independently verified unless you can confirm the relevant evidence.
- Check protocols and controls: Verify the protocols and connection behaviors the provider actually offers. Apple’s support for a protocol does not establish that a particular service implements it.
- Match the service to the use case: For private work or school resources, use the organization’s VPN. For routing covered traffic through a consumer provider, evaluate a consumer VPN. For supported Safari privacy, consider whether Private Relay meets the need.
What macOS 26 adds for IKEv2 security
Apple’s security documentation says devices running macOS 26 and later can be configured to perform additional IKEv2 key exchanges using ML-KEM for quantum security. This is a platform capability, not a guarantee that a commercial VPN provider supports or enables it. Ask the provider or administrator whether the specific service and configuration use the feature. Apple Platform Security documentation describes the capability.
