1. Bekijk eerst wat ruimte inneemt
Op macOS Ventura 13 en nieuwer open je Apple-menu > Systeeminstellingen > Algemeen > Opslag. Op oudere macOS-versies vind je de opslagweergave via Apple-menu > Over deze Mac > Opslag. De precieze weergave en beschikbare aanbevelingen hangen af van je Mac en macOS-versie. Apple beschrijft de opslagweergave en manieren om ruimte vrij te maken.

Gebruik de categorieën als wegwijzer: bekijk waar veel ruimte wordt gebruikt en open eventuele knoppen voor meer informatie voordat je iets verwijdert. De categorieën kunnen per Mac verschillen, afhankelijk van de apps en bestanden erop.
Wat betekenen Systeemgegevens?
Systeemgegevens is een verzamelcategorie. Daarin kunnen onder meer logs, caches, virtueel geheugen, tijdelijke bestanden, lettertypen, app-ondersteuning en plug-ins vallen. De omvang verandert en macOS beheert deze inhoud. Ga daarom niet lukraak bestanden uit systeemmappen verwijderen om die categorie kleiner te maken. Apple legt uit welke soorten bestanden onder Systeemgegevens kunnen vallen.

2. Zoek herkenbare grote bestanden
Bekijk in de opslaginstellingen de documenten en andere bestanden die veel ruimte innemen. Sorteer in Finder op grootte als dat helpt, en controleer of je een bestand nog gebruikt voordat je het weggooit.
- Controleer downloads en oude documenten die je niet meer nodig hebt.
- Verwijder media die je opnieuw kunt streamen of downloaden als je die lokaal niet wilt bewaren.
- Bekijk oude iPhone- of iPad-reservekopieën en bijlagen in Mail en Berichten.
- Wil je grote foto-, video- of projectbestanden bewaren, verplaats ze dan naar een externe schijf in plaats van ze te verwijderen.
Een externe opslagdrive kan bestanden van de interne schijf halen zonder dat je ze hoeft weg te doen. Zorg dat je belangrijke bestanden niet alleen op één opslaglocatie bewaart; met Time Machine kun je bestanden herstellen na per ongeluk wijzigen of verwijderen. 3. Verwijder apps die je niet gebruikt
Sluit de app eerst. Controleer vervolgens of de maker een eigen verwijderprogramma aanbiedt. Volgens Apple is dat de beste methode wanneer die beschikbaar is, omdat het ook gerelateerde onderdelen zoals inlogonderdelen of extensies kan verwijderen.
Is er geen verwijderprogramma, dan kun je de app via Finder naar de prullenmand verplaatsen. Een app verwijderen verwijdert niet automatisch de documenten die je ermee hebt gemaakt en beëindigt geen abonnement. Zeg een abonnement afzonderlijk op als je dat niet meer wilt betalen. Verwijder geen apps die macOS nodig heeft. Apple geeft stappen voor het verwijderen van apps op de Mac.

4. Gebruik opslagoptimalisatie als die bij je past
De aanbevelingen in Systeeminstellingen > Algemeen > Opslag kunnen onder meer voorstellen om bestanden, foto’s en bijlagen in iCloud te bewaren en bestanden op verzoek beschikbaar te maken. Dit kan lokale opslag besparen, maar bestanden en foto’s gebruiken wel ruimte binnen je iCloud-opslagplan. Kies deze optie dus alleen als cloudopslag en toegang via internet bij je gebruik passen. Apple licht de opslagaanbevelingen toe.
De optie voor opslagoptimalisatie kan bekeken Apple TV-programma’s en oudere Mail-bijlagen verwijderen wanneer de Mac ruimte nodig heeft. macOS kan ook bepaalde veilige caches en logbestanden opruimen wanneer opslag nodig is. Je hoeft die bestanden niet zelf handmatig te wissen.

Let op de instelling om de prullenmand automatisch te legen: die kan items ouder dan 30 dagen verwijderen. Schakel dit alleen in als je niet afhankelijk bent van bestanden die nog in de prullenmand staan.

5. Controleer de prullenmand en maak de ruimte vrij
Verplaats bestanden pas definitief uit de prullenmand als je zeker weet dat je ze niet meer nodig hebt. Een bestand naar de prullenmand verplaatsen geeft de opslagruimte nog niet terug. Apple Support zegt: “When you move a file to the Trash, its storage space doesn’t become available until you empty the Trash.” — “Free up storage space on Mac”.

Als je een bestand wilt bewaren, controleer dan eerst of je een aparte kopie hebt of dat het in een Time Machine-reservekopie staat. Een externe schijf kan dienen om bestanden van de interne schijf te verplaatsen; Time Machine is bedoeld om bestanden te herstellen als je ze per ongeluk wijzigt of verwijdert. Dat zijn verschillende doelen: verplaatsen maakt lokaal ruimte, terwijl een back-up herstel mogelijk maakt.
