For the 2024 Mac mini, check the chip: M4 has Thunderbolt 4, while M4 Pro has Thunderbolt 5. And don’t assume a dock’s host connection makes its built-in SSD slot equally fast.
Start with your Mac mini’s chip and ports
Apple’s Mac mini (2024) technical specifications list two front USB-C ports, each supporting USB 3 up to 10Gb/s, and three rear Thunderbolt ports. The rear ports are Thunderbolt 4 on M4 and Thunderbolt 5 on M4 Pro. Apple specifies up to 40Gb/s for Thunderbolt 4 and up to 120Gb/s for Thunderbolt 5; these are interface specifications, not promised SSD transfer rates.

Both configurations also have HDMI and Ethernet, with Gigabit Ethernet standard and configurable 10Gb Ethernet. That means a dock’s value is not simply the number of ports it adds: decide whether you need easier access to USB and card-reader ports, a built-in storage bay, faster wired networking, or additional display connections.

When the Satechi hub’s built-in NVMe slot makes sense
The Satechi ST-GNMMES combines a Mac mini-specific stand and hub with an M.2 NVMe enclosure. The SSD connection is USB 3.2 at up to 10Gbps, even when the hub connects to an M4 Pro’s Thunderbolt 5 port. The host interface and the internal drive’s link are separate, so this is an integrated storage-and-port expansion choice, not a full-speed Thunderbolt NVMe enclosure.
Check the SSD before buying
Satechi supports M.2 NVMe drives in 2230, 2242, 2260 and 2280 sizes, with capacity supported up to 4TB on its ST-GNMMES product page. SATA M.2 drives are incompatible. Satechi also excludes SSDs with heatsinks and double-sided SSDs. The computer and SSD are sold separately; no particular SSD model is established as the best fit.

Know what the added ports do
The Satechi ST-GNMMES User Manual lists two USB-A data ports rated at 10Gbps, a USB-A 2.0 data port rated at 480Mbps, and a UHS-II SD reader rated up to 312MB/s. Satechi says the USB-A ports are not intended for charging. Choose this hub for data access and card transfers, not as a charging station.

Account for shared power and bandwidth
The hub is bus-powered by the Mac mini, and connected devices share available power and data bandwidth. Satechi says all ports can work at once, but recommends using one storage drive at a time for best performance. Its manual cautions: “When using an SSD, do not connect more than one high-powered peripheral or external storage device to the hub due to power requirements.” If the SSD or another attached device unmounts, reduce the load on the hub. Eject the SSD before disconnecting the hub cable to reduce the risk of lost or corrupted files.

In addition, using multiple functional ports (USB/SD/TF, etc.) simultaneously will also impact the product's transfer speed. This is a normal phenomenon. Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions.)
- 【Sufficient Power Supply】iVANKY 13-in-1 Dock comes equipped with a 20W PD power adapter. When connecting multiple high-power devices—such as external hard drives or charging peripherals—using this external power adapter ensures significantly improved power stability. It completely eliminates issues caused by insufficient power supply, keeping your devices running worry-free.
When a conventional Thunderbolt dock is the better choice
If your setup needs wired networking, multiple peripheral connections or display outputs, a conventional Thunderbolt dock may be a better match than a compact stand with a modest-speed SSD bay. TechRadar’s Kensington SD5010T5 EQ review lists 2.5GbE, HDMI 2.1, SD and microSD readers, 13 ports and a downstream Thunderbolt 5 port. It does not list an SSD slot, so plan on a separate external enclosure if you need to add storage.
Match the dock’s capabilities to the Mac mini and the devices you will actually attach. A Thunderbolt 5 dock does not turn an M4 Mac mini’s Thunderbolt 4 ports into Thunderbolt 5, and an advertised set of display outputs does not guarantee every display arrangement will work with every Mac mini configuration.

Check display support against the exact Mac mini
Apple lists support for up to three simultaneous displays on both 2024 Mac mini chips, but the permitted combinations differ. Before choosing a dock for multiple monitors, verify the exact chip, macOS support, connection path and each display’s resolution and refresh rate against Apple’s technical specifications. A dock’s output count alone cannot establish that a particular multi-display setup is supported.

Choose by the job the dock needs to do
- For a tidy desk and added NVMe storage: Consider the Satechi ST-GNMMES if its 10Gbps SSD link, supported drive formats and shared bus power suit your needs.
- For networking and broader peripheral or display connectivity: Consider a conventional Thunderbolt dock such as the Kensington SD5010T5 EQ, while planning separately for storage.
- For a headless server or AI workstation: Treat either dock as a way to expand physical connections or storage capacity. The cited specifications do not establish that the Satechi enclosure is suitable as a boot drive or server volume, or that adding storage makes a particular AI workload faster.
