If your Mac feels slow while Activity Monitor shows yellow or red Memory Pressure, first determine whether the problem is a single runaway app, a workload that exceeds available memory, or hardware that cannot provide enough RAM. Open Activity Monitor > Memory while the slowdown is happening, then read the pressure graph together with Swap Used, Compressed memory, and App Memory. That combination tells you whether quitting an app, reducing simultaneous work, freeing startup-disk space, or checking for upgradeable memory is the appropriate fix.
What Mac Memory Pressure actually means
Memory Pressure is macOS’s assessment of how efficiently physical memory is serving current processing needs. It is not a simple gauge of how much RAM is empty. The calculation considers free memory, the rate at which macOS is swapping, wired memory that cannot be compressed or moved, and file-cached memory.

Apple describes the colors qualitatively:
| Color | Meaning | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Green | RAM is being used efficiently. | Normal operation; investigate only if a specific app is still misbehaving. |
| Yellow | The Mac might eventually need more RAM for the current workload. | Check whether the color is sustained, identify high-memory apps, and reduce concurrent heavy tasks. |
| Red | The Mac needs more RAM for the current workload. | Quit the process driving memory use, reduce the workload, and check whether the Mac supports a memory upgrade. |
Apple does not publish percentage cutoffs for these colors. A brief yellow spike while opening a large project is different from yellow or red that remains on screen during ordinary work.

macOS uses otherwise idle RAM for file caches and compresses inactive memory as demand rises. Cached data can be discarded when an application needs the space, so a high used-memory figure can coexist with responsive performance. Apple’s guidance is explicit: When you have free or unused memory, your computer performance does not necessarily improve.

Judge the system by sustained pressure and responsiveness, not by trying to maximize the free-memory number. A Mac can show little free RAM and remain healthy when pressure is green and swap activity is modest.
Read the four indicators in Activity Monitor
Launch Activity Monitor from Applications > Utilities, select the Memory tab, and leave it visible while reproducing the slowdown. Each metric answers a different question.
Memory Pressure graph
The graph shows the recent trend rather than a single instant. Note the color when the Mac is slow and whether it returns to green after a short burst. Sustained yellow or red during your normal routine is more significant than a momentary spike caused by launching an app, opening a document, or waking from sleep.

App Memory
App Memory is the amount of memory being used by applications and their processes. Click the App Memory column to sort it and look for a process that dominates the list or grows continuously while you repeat the same task. A large application is not automatically faulty; the useful clue is an unusual increase, a process that remains large after its work is finished, or pressure that falls when you quit it.

Compressed memory
Compression lets macOS keep inactive data in RAM in a smaller form instead of immediately writing it to disk. Rising compressed memory can be a normal response as capacity fills. Interpret it with the pressure graph and your workload: compression by itself is not proof of a leak.
Swap Used
Swap Used is startup-disk space macOS uses to move less-active memory data to and from RAM. It is a signal, not a universal failure threshold. There is no Apple-published amount of swap that automatically means a Mac is unhealthy, and there is no authoritative percentage that predicts a fixed performance loss. Look for swap activity occurring at the same time as sustained yellow or red pressure and visible pauses.
A step-by-step slowdown diagnosis
- Reproduce the real problem. Work with the browser windows, documents, virtual machines, media projects, or development tools that normally trigger the slowdown. A test with everything closed can hide the actual pressure pattern.
- Open Activity Monitor > Memory. Record the pressure color during the lag and watch it for several minutes. Distinguish a short spike from a level that stays elevated.
- Sort by App Memory. Identify the process at the top and watch whether its value keeps climbing. Write down the app name and approximate behavior rather than assuming the largest process is the culprit.
- Check Compressed memory and Swap Used. Rising values alongside sustained pressure indicate that macOS is working harder to fit the workload into physical RAM. Swap without pressure or without a noticeable slowdown is not, by itself, a reason to panic.
- Quit one suspect process. Save work, close the app or browser windows you no longer need, and observe the graph and responsiveness. Apple specifically recommends checking whether an app is driving pressure and quitting it when it is no longer needed.
- Repeat with your normal workload. If pressure returns to green and the Mac becomes responsive after closing one process, that process or its workload is the practical starting point. If pressure remains high, continue to the workload and hardware checks below.
Choose the right fix from the evidence
| Observation | Most useful next step |
|---|---|
| Green pressure, no persistent lag | Do not chase a low free-memory number; macOS is using RAM efficiently. |
| Yellow spike that clears after a task finishes | Keep monitoring; reduce simultaneous heavy work only if the spike causes an actual slowdown. |
| Yellow or red pressure with one app’s App Memory growing | Save work, quit that app or its unneeded windows, and check whether pressure falls. |
| Yellow or red pressure across several demanding apps | Reduce concurrent workloads and inspect login or background items. |
| High pressure and swap during ordinary work, with adequate disk space | Check whether the Mac exposes Upgradeable Memory; if not, plan around its fixed capacity. |
| Swap activity with very little free startup-disk space | Make room on the startup disk so macOS has operating space for swap, while recognizing that disk cleanup does not add physical RAM. |
How to reduce swapping safely
Close memory-heavy apps and windows
Quit applications and browser windows you are not using, especially those with large documents, many active tabs, or long-running sessions. Close the specific process identified in App Memory rather than indiscriminately killing background services. Save work first, because quitting a process discards unsaved changes.
Stage demanding work instead of stacking it
Large browser sessions, virtual machines, media projects, and development tools can each consume substantial memory. Running several at once can push an otherwise healthy Mac into compression and swap. Try a controlled sequence: finish or pause the virtual machine before exporting video, close unused project windows before opening a large dataset, or reduce the number of active browser windows while compiling.

These are workload examples, not universal causes. Confirm the pattern in Activity Monitor rather than assuming that any particular app category is responsible.
Keep usable space on the startup disk
Swap uses space on the startup disk. If the disk is nearly full, macOS has less room to move inactive data. Remove or relocate files you no longer need, empty the Trash, and review large local media or virtual-machine images. Apple does not publish a universal free-space percentage or a swap cutoff, so do not treat a particular number as a guarantee. Disk cleanup creates room for swap; it does not increase the Mac’s physical memory capacity.
Restart only as a diagnostic reset
A restart can clear an app’s abnormal allocation and provide a clean baseline. If memory pressure returns as soon as you reopen the same workload, the restart has not solved insufficient capacity. Use the before-and-after Activity Monitor readings to determine whether the app was leaking or the workload simply exceeds available RAM.

Utilities cannot create additional physical RAM. macOS already compresses inactive memory and reclaims file caches when needed. A tool that reports a larger free-memory number may only force caches or useful data out of memory, potentially causing the system to reload it later. Prefer the built-in Activity Monitor measurements and verify any third-party utility’s safety, macOS compatibility, and incremental value before installing it.

Tell an app leak from a workload that is too large
Signs of a runaway or leaking process
- One process’s App Memory grows steadily while you repeat a modest task.
- Pressure and swap rise even after other applications and unnecessary windows are closed.
- Quitting that process produces a clear, repeatable improvement.
- The same growth returns after relaunching the app and performing the same action.
Document the app version, the action that causes growth, and the Activity Monitor trend. Updating the app, removing an extension, or reporting the reproducible behavior to its developer may then be appropriate. Do not label an app a leak solely because it uses more memory than another app.
Signs the workload exceeds available RAM
- Several demanding applications are active at the same time.
- No single process keeps growing abnormally; memory use reflects the work you chose to keep open.
- Pressure improves when you close a major workload and returns when you reopen it.
- The Mac has sustained yellow or red pressure during routine multitasking rather than only during a one-off spike.
In that case, changing the work pattern can help immediately, but a Mac with non-upgradeable memory may ultimately require a model with greater capacity for the way you work.
Check whether your Mac can receive a RAM upgrade
- Open the Apple menu.
- Choose System Information.
- Select Memory in the hardware section.
- Look for Upgradeable Memory.
If a Memory Slots pane does not appear, Apple’s guidance indicates that upgradeable memory is unavailable for that Mac. Do not buy a generic RAM kit based only on the Mac’s name: compatibility is model-specific, and many Macs use fixed or unified memory that cannot be expanded after purchase.
When the System Information check confirms upgradeability, use a kit or service specified for the exact model and memory type. Verify the supported capacity and installation procedure before opening the computer. If the check shows no upgrade path, physical RAM cannot be added internally; focus on workload changes, software diagnosis, startup-disk capacity, or replacing the Mac with a configuration suited to your memory needs.
What not to conclude from one reading
- “Free memory is low, so RAM is failing.” Cached files and compression make low free memory normal when pressure is green.
- “Any swap means I need more RAM.” Swap is a mechanism, not a universal failure line. Correlate it with sustained pressure and the real slowdown.
- “Red appeared once, so the Mac is permanently damaged.” A one-time peak can follow a legitimate burst. Look for recurrence during ordinary work.
- “Restarting fixed it forever.” A restart can reset an abnormal process but cannot increase installed memory.
- “A cleaner app will create RAM.” macOS already manages compression and caches; a larger free-memory figure is not the same as more capacity.
- “Every Mac can take a RAM kit.” Confirm Upgradeable Memory and the Memory Slots pane for the specific Mac first.
A practical monitoring routine
When a slowdown recurs, keep Activity Monitor open and capture four observations: the pressure color, whether it is sustained or a spike, the process at the top of App Memory, and Swap Used while the lag occurs. Note what you were doing and how many demanding applications were open. Then quit the suspected process or reduce one workload at a time, watching whether the graph and responsiveness change.
This controlled approach separates three cases that feel similar at the keyboard: a single app consuming memory abnormally, a normal but oversized workload, and a Mac whose installed memory cannot meet routine demands. It also prevents you from treating a low free-memory number or an isolated swap reading as a diagnosis.
