The M4 MacBook Air is thin, fast, and impressively efficient—but its design also means your accessories do a lot of the heavy lifting. A smart mix of ports, power, storage, and protection can turn “great laptop” into “great setup” without overspending.
This guide focuses on accessories that work with macOS workflows (files, displays, audio, video calls) and that stay useful as your needs evolve—whether you’re studying, coding, editing, or just keeping everything organized.

Why accessories matter for the M4 MacBook Air
Most people love the MacBook Air’s portability, but they quickly run into three recurring limits: fewer built-in ports, the need for dependable charging, and the reality that internal storage fills up. The right accessories solve all three—and they also improve everyday comfort (thermals, dust protection, and display clarity).
#1 Best Overall
- Massive Expansion: Expand your MacBook's 2 USB-C ports into 1 multi-function USB-C port, 1 USB-C data port, 2 USB-A ports, 1 HDMI port, 1 SD card slot, and 1 microSD card slot—all from one ultra-compact hub.
- High-Speed, High-Def: A multi-function USB-C port supports huge charging power up to 100W, data transfer up to an astounding 40 Gb/s, and media display at resolutions up to 5K.
- Multi-Monitor Display: The HDMI port supports a resolution of 4K@60Hz while the multi-function port supports 5K@60Hz. Connect to both simultaneously to enjoy crystal-clear streaming or mirroring across 2 displays. Note: M1, M2 and M3 MacBooks do not support dual external display.
- Designed for the Latest MacBooks: Works with the latest MacBook Air and MacBook Pro, and is designed specially to avoid obstructing your MacBook's MagSafe port. Note: this hub is not compatible with MacBook Neo.
- What You Get: Anker 547 USB-C Hub (7-in-2, for MacBook), welcome guide, worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Think of accessories as “performance multipliers.” A good hub prevents peripheral chaos. A fast external SSD reduces waiting. A better charger means you’re not improvising power every day.
Before you buy: what to check (ports, power, storage, display)
Before selecting any accessory, verify these fundamentals so you don’t waste money.
1) Ports and display needs
Your MacBook Air uses USB-C/Thunderbolt-style connectivity. If you connect HDMI displays, plan for a hub that supports video output, not just data.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Look for HDMI support with your target resolution (commonly 4K at 30Hz or 60Hz depending on the hub and cable).
- If you run multiple monitors, confirm bandwidth and your exact requirements. Many value hubs are single-display only.
2) Power budget for charging
The M4 MacBook Air is designed to charge over USB-C. A GaN charger is usually the most convenient option, but you still need the right wattage.
- For most everyday use, a 35W–65W USB-C GaN charger covers typical scenarios.
- If you expect heavier workflows (external drives, chargers on while running apps), choose 60W+ when possible.
3) External storage speed expectations
If you edit video, import photos, or move large projects, speed matters. Choose an SSD enclosure that supports fast USB standards (often labeled “10Gbps”).
- For best responsiveness, target enclosures compatible with USB 3.2 Gen 2 (10Gbps).
- Prefer USB-C connectors rated for power and data as specified by the enclosure.
Top 10 best accessories for any budget
These picks are organized to work for different spending levels. You can buy one now and expand later—none of these items are mutually exclusive.
1) A USB-C multiport hub with HDMI + USB-A
A solid hub is the quickest way to reclaim ports. The practical goal: HDMI for a monitor, and at least one USB-A port for legacy drives, keyboards, and flash media.
When shopping, prioritize “video supported” models (not just “USB-C hub”). If you need 4K, confirm the advertised refresh rate (often 30Hz vs 60Hz) and system compatibility with macOS.
2) A fast SSD enclosure (USB 3.2 Gen 2/10Gbps)
An external SSD makes your workflow feel faster than the typical USB stick or slower enclosure. It’s also one of the safest ways to expand storage for travel and backups.

3) A reliable USB-C GaN charger (35–65W)
A GaN charger is compact, runs cooler, and reduces the “power brick” mess. For most M4 MacBook Air users, 35W–65W is the sweet spot.

4) A high-quality USB-C cable (100W/240W rated, 2m)
Many accessory problems are actually cable problems—signal dropouts, slow charging, or flaky HDMI behavior through hubs. Use a USB-C cable rated for high wattage (commonly 100W or higher).
A 2m length is the most versatile for desks, couches, and airport seating where outlets are awkward.
5) A protective hard-shell case or sleeve
For an ultra-thin laptop, protection isn’t optional. A sleeve helps for daily carry; a hard-shell case adds impact resistance when bags take hits.
If you work in cafés or commute frequently, prioritize a snug fit that doesn’t scrape ports and doesn’t leave dust pockets that trap grit.
6) A screen protector designed for MacBook Air
A screen protector can reduce glare and prevent micro-scratches from daily contact with bags. Choose one that’s cut specifically for the MacBook Air model to avoid lifted edges.
Opt for matte if you hate reflections, or clear if you want maximum sharpness—both exist, and both can work depending on your lighting.

- 5 in 1 Connectivity: The USB C Multiport Adapter is equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 100W USB C PD port, a 5 Gbps USB A data port, and two 480 Mbps USB A ports
7) A keyboard cover and trackpad skin (optional)
These are “comfort and cleanliness” accessories. A keyboard cover can help with dust and minor spills, while a trackpad skin is usually used to improve grip.

8) A USB-C audio interface or DAC/amp (for wired headphones)
If you use higher-end wired headphones or you want cleaner mic monitoring, a DAC/amp (or a small audio interface for podcast-style work) can improve reliability compared to basic adapters.
Look for macOS compatibility and confirm whether you need headphone output only or both input and output for calls/recording.
9) A compact USB-C webcam or a proper conference mic
MacBooks have decent built-in cameras, but video calls still benefit from better optics and audio. A small external webcam can improve image quality in low light.

10) A travel-ready power + cable organizer
Organization is the hidden quality-of-life upgrade. A cable organizer, small pouch, or tech travel kit keeps chargers, adapters, and spare cables from turning into a daily annoyance.
Pick a case that fits your charger and hub together. Your goal is to pack in under 60 seconds and avoid port stress from constant plugging and unplugging.
Compatibility gotchas and how to avoid the wrong purchase
Accessories don’t just need to “work once.” They need to work consistently across reboots, sleep/wake cycles, and common apps like YouTube, Zoom, and WordPress admin dashboards.

HDMI adapters: check refresh rate and display type
Many USB-C hubs advertise “4K support,” but not all deliver 4K at 60Hz. If your monitor is 4K and you care about smooth motion (spreadsheets, scrolling, UI animations), confirm the refresh rate and test with a known cable.
Charging: avoid underpowered chargers
A charger that’s too low wattage may still connect, but it can charge slowly or stop while you use demanding apps. When in doubt, choose higher wattage (within reason) and reputable brands.
External SSD enclosures: don’t assume “USB-C” equals fast
Some enclosures look modern but cap transfer speed due to older USB standards. If a listing doesn’t mention 10Gbps/USB 3.2 Gen 2, treat it as “likely slower” unless verified.

If your hub, SSD enclosure, or audio device acts flaky, use a tight troubleshooting loop. Don’t start by replacing everything—start with the simplest variables.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFix 1: Try a different USB-C port
On the MacBook Air, port behavior can differ slightly. If one USB-C port causes drops (especially with hubs), try the other port.
Fix 2: Power-cycle the chain
Disconnect the accessory, restart the Mac, then reconnect. For HDMI hubs, also unplug the HDMI display and reconnect after the Mac boots.
Fix 3: Test with a known-good cable
Swapping the cable often resolves USB disconnects and charging instability. Use a cable known to support data and the wattage your charger delivers.
Fix 4: Confirm macOS settings for displays
Go to System Settings → Displays. If your monitor appears but resolution is wrong, switch scaling options, then confirm the refresh rate if exposed.
Fix 5: For external SSDs, check disk visibility and format
If an external SSD doesn’t mount, open Finder. If it’s visible but unusable, the drive might be formatted for Windows-only (NTFS) or otherwise incompatible. In that case, check your use case and consider reformatting only if you don’t need existing data.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Buying a hub that only mirrors ports: If you need video, verify HDMI functionality and resolution/refresh claims.
- Underestimating cable quality: Cheap cables can cause slow charging or unstable connections with docks and monitors.
- Choosing a slow enclosure: If you edit or frequently move files, a USB 2.0-class enclosure will feel like a bottleneck.
- Overbuying “premium” cases: If it adds bulk and you hate carrying it, you’ll stop using it. Choose protection you’ll actually bring.
- Ignoring portability: Chargers and organizers should fit your travel routine, not just your desk.
FAQs
Do I need a hub if I only use a mouse and charger?
No. If you’re mostly charging, using a Bluetooth mouse, and working on the built-in display, a hub may be unnecessary. Consider adding one when you need HDMI, USB-A, or faster file transfers.
What wattage charger should I buy for M4 MacBook Air?
For most users, a 35W–65W USB-C GaN charger is a practical range. If you plan to run demanding tasks while charging, aim closer to 60W+.

Will an external SSD work for backups and editing?
Yes—an SSD enclosure with USB 3.2 Gen 2/10Gbps support is a strong choice for both backups and editing. Pair it with a reliable cable and confirm the enclosure’s actual speed rating.
Do screen protectors affect touch or display quality?
Screen protectors for MacBook displays typically don’t affect typing or trackpad. Matte options can reduce glare but may slightly soften contrast depending on the film.
Can I use the same hub for multiple monitors?
Sometimes, but not reliably with value hubs. If you need dual displays, confirm the hub supports multi-monitor output on macOS and check whether it supports your specific resolutions and refresh rates.
Bottom Line
The best M4 MacBook Air accessories aren’t the most expensive—they’re the ones that solve your real bottlenecks: ports, power stability, fast storage, and day-to-day protection. Start with a quality hub, a dependable charger, and (if you move files) a fast SSD enclosure.
Once those foundations are set, the rest becomes preference: better audio for calls, a webcam upgrade if your lighting is tough, and practical travel organization so your setup feels effortless every day.
