M30 vs. M15: How These Globular Clusters Differ

M30 (NGC 7099) and M15 (NGC 7078) are both ancient globular clusters in the Milky Way. The clearest sourced differences are that M30 is measured at a closer distance, while M15 is famous for its exceptionally dense center and evidence that it has passed through core collapse and begun expanding again.

The comparison is not perfectly symmetrical. Recent studies provide M30 age, distance and metallicity estimates, whereas the NASA material used for M15 concentrates on its structure, distance and dynamical history. A missing M15 value below means that the cited material does not establish a directly matched number—not that M15 lacks the property.

Quick comparison: M30 and M15

Property M30 (NGC 7099) M15 (NGC 7078) How to read the comparison
Cluster type Galactic globular cluster Milky Way globular cluster in Pegasus Both are old, gravitationally bound stellar systems in the Galaxy.
Distance from Earth 8.29 ± 0.03 ± 0.27 kpc in a 2024 isochrone fit; older variable-star estimates are 8.32 ± 0.20, 8.10 and 8.35 ± 0.42 kpc About 10 kpc, or 32,600 light-years, on NASA’s Hubble page M30 is closer in these estimates, but the studies used different methods.
Age 12.80 ± 0.17 billion years, with 0.8 billion years of systematic uncertainty, in a 2024 isochrone study; 13 ± 1 billion years in a 2013 variable-star study Not stated on the NASA M15 page used here The available figures do not support ranking one cluster as older.
Metallicity [Fe/H] = −2.07 ± 0.04 dex, with 0.1 dex systematic uncertainty, in the 2024 study; the 2013 study gives −2.01 ± 0.04 and −2.11 ± 0.06 dex on different scales Not stated on the NASA M15 page used here M30’s iron abundance is quantified, but there is no matched M15 value in these materials.
Central structure Concentration parameter c = 2.29 and core radius 4.3 arcseconds in a 2012 blue-straggler dynamical study Core only about 0.8 light-years across, with nearly 7,000 stars in the central core These are different kinds of measurements, so they should not be treated as a direct size-versus-size test.
Dynamical interpretation Classified as dynamical-age Family III in the blue-straggler study NASA describes a very dense center that has passed maximum core collapse and is expanding M15 has the more explicit post-collapse description; M30’s classification comes from a different indicator.
Mass figure available in the cited material Not stated in the cited M30 studies NASA page metadata lists 600,000 solar masses This is not a matched mass comparison.

In practical terms, M30 is the closer object in the quoted distance estimates. M15’s distinctive story is dynamical: its center became extraordinarily compact, then binary-star interactions helped drive expansion after the cluster reached its most concentrated phase.

What is the difference between M30 and M15?

The short answer is that the available measurements emphasize different aspects of the two clusters. M30 is documented with a recent isochrone age of 12.80 billion years, an iron abundance of [Fe/H] = −2.07 dex and a distance of 8.29 kiloparsecs, with uncertainties attached to each estimate. M15 is documented as a cluster about 10 kiloparsecs away with an exceptionally compact central core and a dynamical history interpreted as post-core-collapse expansion.

That is a difference in the evidence as much as a difference in the objects. The cited M30 papers are parameter studies of stellar populations and variable stars. NASA’s M15 pages are explanatory Hubble material focused on central density and evolution. They do not form one uniform survey, so the safest comparison keeps the method and date next to every number.

Are M30 and M15 both globular clusters?

M30: NGC 7099

M30 is the Messier designation for NGC 7099. The photometric studies cited here treat it as a Galactic globular cluster: a spherical, densely populated system whose stars are bound to one another and orbit the Milky Way. The cluster’s very low measured iron abundance is consistent with the picture of a population formed early in Galactic history, although an age estimate is still an inference from stellar models rather than a direct clock reading.

M15: NGC 7078 in Pegasus

M15 is NGC 7078, a Milky Way globular cluster located in the constellation Pegasus. NASA’s Hubble material emphasizes its unusually compact central region rather than presenting a matched set of age and chemical-abundance measurements. The Messier and NGC names are catalog identifiers for the same object, not names of different clusters.

Which cluster is closer to Earth?

M30 is closer in the available estimates. A 2024 isochrone fit places it at 8.29 ± 0.03 ± 0.27 kiloparsecs. The first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. Earlier variable-star analyses produced 8.32 ± 0.20 kpc, 8.10 kpc and 8.35 ± 0.42 kpc, depending on the method used.

NASA lists M15 at about 10 kpc, equivalent to 32,600 light-years. Comparing 8.29 kpc with 10 kpc gives a straightforward ordering, but it is not a precision contest: M30’s figures come from isochrone and variable-star analyses, while the NASA value is a rounded object-page distance. The responsible conclusion is simply that M30 lies nearer in these published estimates.

For scale, one kiloparsec is about 3,260 light-years. M30’s quoted range of roughly 8.1–8.35 kpc therefore corresponds to about 26,400–27,200 light-years, while 10 kpc corresponds to NASA’s 32,600-light-year figure for M15. The conversion helps visualize the separation, but it does not remove the uncertainty or make unlike measurements identical.

What do the M30 age measurements mean?

The 2024 isochrone result

The 2024 study fits theoretical isochrones—model curves showing how stars of different masses and compositions evolve—to M30’s observed stellar population. It reports an age of 12.80 ± 0.17 billion years. That ±0.17-billion-year term is the quoted statistical uncertainty; the authors also assign 0.8 billion years of systematic uncertainty. The systematic term reflects assumptions that can shift the result even when the observations are measured precisely.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Adding the two uncertainty categories is not a matter of simple arithmetic. Statistical uncertainty describes scatter or precision within the adopted analysis, whereas systematic uncertainty represents possible shifts from calibration, models or other shared assumptions. Thus, 12.80 billion years should not be read as a formation date known to the nearest few hundred million years.

The earlier variable-star result

A 2013 time-series photometry study gives 13 ± 1 billion years. Variable stars can provide distance and evolutionary constraints, but the result depends on calibration, adopted chemical composition and the stellar models used. The two M30 values overlap once their uncertainties and different methods are considered. They should be reported as estimates, not as an exact formation date.

What cannot be concluded about M15

The NASA M15 material used for this comparison does not provide a directly comparable age estimate. Therefore, the evidence here cannot establish that M30 is older or younger than M15. Both clusters are described as ancient, but “ancient” is the scientifically supported common ground rather than a numerical age ranking.

What is known about M30’s metallicity?

Metallicity is an astronomical shorthand for the abundance of elements heavier than helium. The 2024 M30 analysis reports [Fe/H] = −2.07 ± 0.04 dex, with an additional 0.1 dex systematic uncertainty. In logarithmic notation, a more negative [Fe/H] indicates less iron relative to the Sun.

The 2013 study reports −2.01 ± 0.04 dex and −2.11 ± 0.06 dex using different abundance scales. Those values are close to the 2024 result, but mixing them as though they came from one calibration would overstate the precision. No equivalent M15 metallicity value is established by the NASA pages used here, so M30 should not be labeled more or less metal-poor than M15 on this evidence alone.

The spread among the M30 values illustrates why abundance scales matter. A difference of a few hundredths of a dex can be smaller than the systematic offset introduced by changing the calibration. Readers should therefore treat −2.07 dex as a well-defined result of one analysis, not as a universal constant that every future study must reproduce exactly.

Why is M15’s center so important?

A remarkably compact core

NASA’s Hubble account describes M15’s central core as only about 0.8 light-years across, containing nearly 7,000 stars. That is an extreme stellar density: many stars occupy a region that is tiny compared with the cluster’s overall dimensions. NASA’s object-page metadata lists a total cluster mass of 600,000 solar masses, but the available M30 studies do not supply a matched mass estimate.

The 0.8-light-year figure refers to the central core, not the diameter of the entire cluster. Likewise, the approximately 7,000 stars are a count for that central region, not a census of all M15 members. Keeping those boundaries clear prevents the common mistake of treating a core measurement as a whole-cluster measurement.

How gravitational encounters drive contraction

Stars in a globular cluster constantly exchange energy through close gravitational encounters. More massive stars tend to lose kinetic energy and drift inward, a process often described as mass segregation. As heavy stars accumulate in the center, the core contracts and its density rises.

This is a collective process taking place over many stellar encounters. It does not mean that every star follows the same inward path or that the cluster suddenly collapses like a single solid body. The observable result is a changing density profile and a growing concentration of stars toward the center.

Why contraction can reverse

Close binary stars change the outcome. When another star interacts with a binary, the binary can become tighter and give some of its orbital energy to the passing star. Those energy transfers heat the surrounding cluster and can halt or reverse the contraction. After the most compact phase, the central region expands even though the cluster remains gravitationally bound.

In this context, “heating” is a dynamical term: energy is redistributed into stellar motions. It does not imply that the stars become physically hotter in the everyday sense. Binary interactions act as an energy source for the cluster’s internal motion and can support re-expansion.

M15 as a post-collapse cluster

NASA interprets Hubble observations as showing that M15 has passed maximum core collapse and that its post-collapse expansion was well advanced. “Core collapse” here describes a dynamical phase, not the destruction of the cluster or the collapse of every star into a black hole. It refers to the shrinking of the cluster’s stellar core under gravity until energy released by binaries and other interactions drives re-expansion.

How does M30’s dynamical state compare?

M30 appears in dynamical-age Family III in a 2012 study that used the distribution of blue straggler stars. Blue stragglers are stars that appear younger or more massive than the ordinary turnoff population, often because of stellar mergers or mass transfer. Their radial distribution can preserve information about how strongly a cluster has dynamically evolved.

The same study lists M30’s concentration parameter as c = 2.29 and its core radius as 4.3 arcseconds. These values describe the cluster’s observed structural concentration in that analysis. Family III is a classification of dynamical age based on the blue-straggler distribution; it is not the same measurement as Hubble’s direct description of M15’s compact core and post-collapse expansion.

Arcseconds are angular units measured on the sky, so M30’s 4.3-arcsecond core radius cannot be turned into a physical radius without adopting a distance and a geometric conversion. Even after conversion, the result would still belong to that study’s definition of core radius. M15’s 0.8-light-year statement, by contrast, is already expressed as a physical scale. This is another reason not to place the two figures in a single ranking.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Consequently, it is accurate to place both clusters in a discussion of advanced dynamical evolution, but inaccurate to claim that the two studies measured an identical “core-collapse score.” M15 has an explicitly documented post-collapse interpretation. M30 has an independently derived Family III classification and structural parameters from another diagnostic.

Does M15 contain a confirmed central black hole?

Not on the evidence summarized here. An older Hubble density-profile study found that M15’s measured central star-count profile could be fitted by either core-collapse models or a model containing a massive central black hole. NASA’s later page includes black-hole-related metadata, but that does not turn the model alternative into a settled detection.

The careful statement is that M15 has a very dense center whose observed profile has supported more than one dynamical interpretation. Core collapse and a massive central black-hole model are competing explanations in the cited work; the existence, mass and nature of a central black hole are not resolved by those pages alone.

How should you interpret the numbers without over-comparing them?

  • Keep the methods attached to every value. M30’s distances come from isochrone fitting and variable-star analyses; M15’s quoted distance is NASA’s rounded value.
  • Separate measured structure from inferred history. M15’s 0.8-light-year core and approximately 7,000 central stars are structural observations, while “post-collapse expansion” is a dynamical interpretation of those observations.
  • Do not turn missing values into differences. The absence of a matched M15 age or metallicity in the cited material does not show that M15 has a different age or iron abundance.
  • Do not treat concentration values as universal scores. M30’s c = 2.29 belongs to a particular structural analysis and cannot be compared directly with M15’s core diameter without a common survey and definition.
  • Use approximate language for rounded distances. “M30 is closer” is supported; a claim about an exact percentage separation would imply a precision the sources do not provide.
  • Distinguish catalog facts from physical conclusions. NGC and Messier numbers identify objects; they do not encode age, size or evolutionary state.
  • Check whether a value is statistical or systematic. M30’s 2024 age, distance and metallicity each carry uncertainty components that should remain visible in a serious comparison.

What can an observer infer from the comparison?

The distance ordering is the most straightforward practical result: M30’s estimates place it several thousand light-years nearer than M15’s approximately 32,600-light-year value. Apparent brightness, angular size or ease of observation cannot, however, be inferred from distance alone. Those properties also depend on total luminosity, stellar distribution, foreground extinction and the observing instrument, none of which are matched here.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a science reader, the more important contrast is methodological. M30 demonstrates how isochrones, variable stars and abundance scales can constrain a stellar population. M15 demonstrates how a central density profile and Hubble imaging can reveal a cluster’s dynamical history. The clusters are useful comparison cases precisely because they are not being described with one identical measurement set.

What is the practical difference between M30 and M15?

If your question is about location, M30 is the nearer cluster: the cited M30 estimates fall around 8.1–8.35 kpc, compared with NASA’s approximately 10-kpc value for M15. If your question is about internal dynamics, M15 is the more clearly documented example of an extremely dense, evolving core that has passed through maximum collapse and is now expanding.

M30 is better characterized in the available material by quantitative stellar-population parameters: an age near 12.8–13 billion years, very low [Fe/H] near −2.07 dex, and a distance near 8.29 kpc in the newest fit. M15 is better characterized by its compact center, its nearly 7,000 stars within about 0.8 light-years, and the historical debate over whether its central profile is explained by core collapse alone or could include a massive black hole.

Both are ancient Galactic globular clusters, but they are not interchangeable examples. M30’s strongest evidence here concerns age, chemistry and distance; M15’s strongest evidence concerns central density and dynamical evolution.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the main difference between M30 and M15?

M30 is measured as the closer cluster and has detailed published age, distance and metallicity estimates. M15 is distinguished by its exceptionally dense center and evidence for post-core-collapse expansion.

Are M30 and M15 both in the Milky Way?

Yes. M30 is NGC 7099, a Galactic globular cluster, and M15 is NGC 7078, a Milky Way globular cluster in Pegasus.

Which is closer to Earth, M30 or M15?

M30. Its cited estimates are about 8.1–8.35 kpc, while NASA gives M15 about 10 kpc, or 32,600 light-years.

How old is M30?

A 2024 isochrone study gives 12.80 ± 0.17 billion years with 0.8 billion years of systematic uncertainty. A 2013 variable-star study gives 13 ± 1 billion years.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is M30 older than M15?

The cited M15 material does not provide a directly comparable age, so these sources cannot establish that M30 is older or younger.

What does core collapse mean for M15?

It is a dynamical phase in which gravitational encounters concentrate stars into a denser core. Binary interactions can then transfer energy to surrounding stars and drive expansion; NASA describes M15 as well along in that post-collapse phase.

Does M15 have a confirmed black hole at its center?

No confirmed detection is established by the cited material. An older density-profile study found that both core-collapse models and a massive-central-black-hole model could fit the observations.

Can M30’s concentration parameter be compared directly with M15’s core size?

No. M30’s c = 2.29 and 4.3-arcsecond core radius come from a blue-straggler dynamical study, whereas M15’s 0.8-light-year core is a physical size from NASA’s Hubble account. They use different definitions and diagnostics.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: M30 (NGC 7099) is the closer cluster in the cited estimates, at roughly 8.1–8.35 kpc, and it has quantified age and metallicity results near 12.8–13 billion years and [Fe/H] ≈ −2.07 dex. M15 (NGC 7078) is about 10 kpc away and stands out for a core only about 0.8 light-years across containing nearly 7,000 stars. Hubble evidence supports a post-core-collapse, expanding center, but does not by itself confirm a central black hole. Both are ancient Galactic globular clusters; the strongest contrast is M30’s measured stellar-population parameters versus M15’s exceptionally dense and dynamically evolved core.
