NASA’s Astronomy Picture of the Day for October 5, 2026 shows the Sombrero Galaxy (M104) well beyond its famous bright core and dark dust lane. A very deep exposure picks up a hazy stellar halo, a diagonal ring and faint stream-like features. NASA’s caption reads these as evidence of a violent past, with collisions and mergers of smaller galaxies. That is an interpretation of the structures, not something the picture proves on its own.
What the image shows
The image is credited to Engelbert Vollmer. According to the APOD, it was taken over seven days in mid-2026 from Namibia. The page does not name the telescope, camera, filters or processing method, so none of those are described here.

The familiar view of M104 is a bright central bulge cut by a dark, brim-like dust lane, which gives the galaxy its hat shape. The long exposure adds several things:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- a hazy halo of stars extending far beyond the disk;
- unresolved stars, meaning stars too faint or crowded to appear individually, that blend into a soft glow;
- a diagonal ring;
- other faint, stream-like structures.
Distance and size
The APOD caption gives the galaxy’s distance as about 30 million light-years and its full span as about 150 thousand light-years. These are the caption’s approximate figures, not new measurements.

What tidal streams are
A tidal stream is a faint, elongated band of stars. The standard explanation is that a smaller galaxy passing close to a larger one is stretched by gravity, and its stars spread into arcs, shells or ribbons around the larger galaxy. These features last a long time but are very dim, which is why they only appear in very deep exposures.
What the streams suggest about M104’s past
NASA’s caption describes the ring and streams as fresh evidence of a violent history involving collisions and mergers of smaller galaxies. This is the key idea: the faint outskirts of a galaxy preserve a record of what it has absorbed.

A separate peer-reviewed study supports this reading. The paper “A feather on the hat: Tracing the giant stellar stream around the Sombrero galaxy” examines the giant stellar stream around M104. It uses how that stream formed to constrain the galaxy’s merger history. Its arXiv abstract describes a proposed past major-merger scenario and uses the stream to limit when such an event could have happened.
Where the evidence stops
- The image shows structures. The merger story is a scientific interpretation of them.
- The major-merger scenario in the paper is a research proposal, not an observation from the APOD.
- One image does not fix the number, timing or exact order of mergers. Those questions need modelling and additional data.
Seeing it yourself
The halo and streams in this picture come from a seven-day exposure. They should not be expected in casual viewing. Through an ordinary telescope, M104 is best known for its bright core and dust lane. The sources do not give enough equipment detail to recommend specific gear for reproducing the image.
