California’s $272.5 million agreement with Lyft is designed to compensate eligible drivers for alleged wage and classification violations during a past period. It does not require Lyft to reclassify drivers going forward or compensate them for work after that period. The agreement, announced October 1, 2026, still requires court approval; it is a settlement of allegations, not a court finding that Lyft violated the law.
What does the Lyft settlement cover?
The California Labor Commissioner’s Office and the Attorney General say the agreement resolves allegations that Lyft treated California drivers as independent contractors when state law required employee protections. The alleged lost protections included minimum wages, overtime, rest-break premiums, reimbursement of business expenses, accurate wage statements, timely payment of wages, and paid sick leave.

The covered period ends December 15, 2020. Official documents differ by one day on its start: the Labor Commissioner’s Office gives April 6, 2016, while the Attorney General’s announcement and Lyft’s SEC filing give April 5, 2016. The disagreement matters if a driver is checking whether particular work dates fall within the period.

The Labor Commissioner’s Office describes the agreement as the largest wage-and-hour settlement in California history. The Attorney General calls it the largest misclassification settlement in California history. Those are each agencies’ descriptions of the settlement, not interchangeable claims about every type of employment case.

How much is set aside for drivers, and how are payments calculated?
The total settlement is $272.5 million. The Attorney General says at least $237.075 million is reserved for drivers; the Labor Commissioner’s Office says 87% of the total will go directly to drivers. The agency also says more than 1,600 drivers who filed administrative wage claims will receive additional funds after its $5.45 million share of penalties is redirected to them.
Eligibility and payment calculations are based on hours and miles driven during the covered period. The Labor Commissioner’s Office says wage claimants receive a multiplier that doubles the mileage used to calculate their payment. These allocation rules do not establish what any particular driver will receive: an individual amount depends on the applicable records and calculation.
Lyft’s SEC filing says the $272.5 million includes attorneys’ fees, costs, and expenses. It also says payments may be made over four years, with 5% simple interest accruing after the first year, up to a maximum of $12.4 million. That describes the agreement’s payment terms, not a schedule for checks to individual drivers.

Who qualifies, and when will checks arrive?
A third-party administrator is expected to manage the restitution fund and contact eligible people after court approval and funding. As of the official October 1, 2026 announcements, the administrator’s website, email address, call center, and further process details had not yet been provided. No individual payment date is confirmed in those announcements.
Drivers should distinguish this settlement’s future administrator process from the administrative wage claims some drivers already filed. The Labor Commissioner’s Office says those claimants are included in the allocation provisions described above, but that does not mean every driver who worked for Lyft in California automatically qualifies or will receive the same amount.
Does the agreement change how Lyft classifies drivers now?
No. The Labor Commissioner’s Office says the agreement neither requires future reclassification nor provides relief for work after December 15, 2020. Lyft’s SEC filing likewise says the company made no prospective operational commitments and that the settlement is not an admission of fact or liability. The agreement therefore resolves a defined set of past allegations without deciding drivers’ status for future work.

That limit is central to the settlement’s reach: money is directed toward claims tied to a historical period, while the agreement does not itself create a new forward-looking employment arrangement or promise future employee benefits.
What does Proposition 22 mean for Lyft drivers?
California voters approved Proposition 22 in November 2020, creating a separate classification framework for qualifying app-based drivers. The Labor Commissioner’s Office says it lacks authority to enforce rights grounded in Proposition 22, including the engaged-time minimum-pay guarantee and qualifying health-insurance stipend. The agency’s October 2024 case explainer also says it can hear certain post-period Labor Code claims if a driver does not meet Proposition 22’s independent-contractor test.
So the settlement’s cutoff should not be read as proof that drivers have no rights after 2020. It means the agreement does not pay for later work, while any later claim depends on the applicable legal framework and facts.

Why do driver advocates say the settlement is not enough?
Rideshare Drivers United welcomed the recovery but argued it was too small. The organization says more than 1,900 Lyft drivers filed claims in 2020 totaling more than $434 million, and its president, Nicole Moore, questioned why companies accused of withholding wages and expenses could pay less than drivers said they were owed. Those figures and that criticism are the organization’s account, not findings established by the settlement announcement or a court judgment.
The distinction is important: the agencies describe the negotiated amount, covered period, and allocation process; Rideshare Drivers United offers an advocacy assessment of what workers say was owed. The agreement does not, by itself, resolve that disagreement about the adequacy of the recovery.

Two other government matters sometimes mentioned alongside Lyft’s labor disputes are separate from California’s 2026 agreement:
- Federal earnings claims: In 2024, the Federal Trade Commission and the Department of Justice pursued a separate matter over alleged misleading earnings claims in driver recruitment. The FTC’s case page describes a proposed order requiring typical-earnings substantiation and a $2.1 million civil penalty.
- New Jersey contributions: In 2025, the New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development reported that Lyft paid $19,435,087.06 after an audit concerning unemployment, disability, family leave, and workforce-development contributions tied to drivers during 2014–2017.
Neither matter is part of the California settlement fund or its driver-payment process.
