Neither Uber nor Lyft can be identified as the higher-paying U.S. platform overall from the available official rules. The useful comparison is local: check what counts as paid time and miles, what each app’s pay floor includes, which protections apply where you drive, and what remains after vehicle costs.
Which service pays drivers more overall?
There is no verified nationwide, like-for-like comparison of Uber and Lyft drivers’ net earnings in representative U.S. markets. Company pay guarantees and local rules are not the same as a typical hourly wage: many count only a trip’s booked, engaged, or active time, not all the time a driver is logged in and waiting. A local minimum therefore cannot, on its own, tell you which app pays more for a full shift.
The rules in New York City, New York State outside the city, and California illustrate why a city- and platform-specific comparison matters:
| Location and source | What the rule or program describes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| New York City — Taxi and Limousine Commission (TLC) | Minimum per-trip payments for covered high-volume for-hire services, including Uber and Lyft. The formula uses per-mile and per-minute rates adjusted for utilization, which the TLC defines as the share of on-duty time spent with a passenger. The TLC says trips ending outside the city receive an adjusted formula to account for return time without a passenger. | An hourly wage or a set driver payment or passenger fare. TLC: “These rules establish a minimum per-trip payment to drivers; they do not establish a minimum wage or set the exact driver payment or passenger fare.” |
| New York State outside NYC — Lyft driver information, amount displayed as of March 2026 | For rides picked up outside NYC and not covered by TLC rules, Lyft describes a minimum based on time from accepting a request through dropping off the rider. The page displays $28.41 and says a shortfall, excluding tips, is made up in the next earnings period. | A statewide Uber amount, a minimum for NYC-originating Lyft trips, or typical earnings. This is a Lyft-specific, geography-limited floor. |
| California — Uber’s 2026 earnings page | A guarantee based on 120% of the applicable local minimum wage for active time, plus $0.37 per active mile as expense compensation. Uber compares qualifying net earnings over two weeks and tops up a shortfall; tips are excluded from that comparison. | Pay for online time spent waiting for requests, or a national Uber rate. Uber defines active time as beginning when a request is accepted and ending when the trip is completed. |
In NYC, use the TLC trip minimum calculator and compare the result with trip-level statements and deductions. The TLC says covered companies must provide detailed pay and deduction information. Its statement that “more than 80,000 drivers” were expected to see earnings increases refers to the policy’s anticipated effect, not a current count of all NYC app drivers.

How to compare your own results
- Use the same city, dates, and comparable driving periods for both apps.
- Record time online, time on trips, trip miles, and miles driven without a passenger, including repositioning.
- Track fares, tips, incentives, tolls, cancellations, platform deductions, and any guarantee top-up separately.
- Subtract your vehicle operating costs and account for unpaid waiting before comparing net results per hour online.
- Include benefits and protections that apply to your location, but do not treat a tax deduction or a mileage component of a guarantee as cash reimbursement.
How much do Uber and Lyft drivers make after expenses?
The official sources described here do not establish a typical take-home amount for either platform. Gross fares, app payout, or a platform’s “active earnings” figure is not the same as net income. A driver’s result depends on both paid and unpaid time and on costs such as fuel or charging, maintenance, insurance, depreciation or lease payments, tolls, and empty miles between trips.
For a useful personal comparison, calculate revenue and incentives for a defined period, then subtract the costs attributable to driving and compare the result with all hours online—not only engaged time. Keep platform statements and contemporaneous expense records. This produces a driver-specific estimate; it does not make it a national average.

Do Uber and Lyft pay for waiting time?
Do not assume that time logged into an app is covered by a guarantee. Uber’s California page explicitly excludes online time spent waiting for a request: active time begins with accepting a request and ends when the trip is completed. Its two-week top-up calculation applies to qualifying earnings under that program, not every hour online.
The NYC TLC rule is a minimum per-trip payment, not an hourly wage. Lyft’s New York page outside NYC bases its described minimum on the period from accepting a request through drop-off. These are different measures; neither should be read as a general promise to pay for all idle time. Check the applicable local program’s definitions, trip statements, and top-up period.

What benefits do Lyft and Uber drivers get?
Benefits depend on where a driver works and on meeting each program’s eligibility rules. A benefit described for one state or city should not be assumed to apply nationally, and a company-described benefit is not automatically employer-sponsored health insurance or workers’ compensation.
New York paid leave and support
The New York Attorney General’s settlement page describes benefits arising from separate settlements with Uber and Lyft, including sick leave, training, and support. It lists one hour of sick pay for every 30 hours of qualifying trip time, up to 56 hours annually. Lyft’s New York driver information describes one paid sick and safe leave hour per 30 ride hours, up to 56 hours annually. Uber’s NYC information describes one hour per 30 active hours, up to 56 hours per year, and states a leave pay rate. Eligibility, qualifying time, and payment details vary by program and geography.
The Attorney General’s page also describes earnings statements and rider-payment notices in New York. Uber’s NYC overview points drivers to an in-app deactivation appeal process. Since app procedures can change, consult the current in-app help flow rather than relying on an old set of navigation steps.

California Uber program
Uber says eligible California drivers may qualify for a quarterly healthcare stipend if they average at least 15 active hours per week during the quarter and enroll in a qualifying health plan. Its Proposition 22 overview also describes an injury-protection policy for injuries while online, with medical, disability, and survivor benefits. These are descriptions of Uber’s California program, not a statement about benefits in other states or a complete comparison with Lyft. Lyft’s California page was not fully accessible for verification, so a detailed Lyft-versus-Uber benefits comparison there is not established here.

That depends on the rules where you drive and on your own trip mix. Compare the actual program terms rather than relying on a national ranking or a headline rate. In particular, check:

- Pay-floor basis: Is the minimum per trip, or based on engaged, booked, or active time? Does it exclude idle time?
- Eligible miles: Does a mileage amount apply to active or booked miles only, and is it separate from the time-based amount?
- Top-up rules: What period is used, and how do tips, incentives, tolls, and cancellations affect the comparison?
- Benefits: Which sick leave, healthcare stipend, injury coverage, training, or deactivation-appeal provisions apply to your location and eligibility?
- Transparency: Can you access trip-level earnings, rider-payment information, and explanations of deductions?
- Net results: Which app produces a better result in comparable records after operating costs and unpaid online time?
For example, an NYC driver should compare each covered trip with the TLC per-trip minimum rather than convert that minimum into an hourly wage. A California Uber driver should separate the two-week active-time guarantee from hours spent waiting online. These measures answer different questions and cannot be compared as though they were a single national pay rate.
How do rideshare drivers track mileage and expenses for taxes?
The IRS says gig income must be reported even when the work is part-time or no particular information form is issued. IRS Publication 583 explains that eligible taxpayers may use the standard mileage method instead of calculating actual vehicle costs and emphasizes recording expenses when they occur. A platform payout or its active-earnings calculation is not taxable profit or take-home income.
The IRS mileage-rate table lists these 2026 federal business-mile rates:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
| Business-mile period | IRS rate | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| January 1–June 30, 2026 | 72.5 cents per business mile | Optional tax calculation rate for eligible business vehicle use. |
| July 1–December 31, 2026 | 76 cents per business mile | Optional tax calculation rate for eligible business vehicle use. |
These rates are tax calculation rates, not Uber or Lyft reimbursements, estimates of your individual vehicle costs, or guarantees about the amount you can deduct. The applicable rate can change during the year, so use the rate for the date the business mileage occurred and check IRS guidance for eligibility and recordkeeping rules.
Records to keep
- Business mileage records, with dates and enough detail to support the business use claimed.
- Receipts and records for relevant vehicle expenses if using the actual-cost method.
- App statements showing trips, payouts, fees, incentives, tips, and deductions.
- Records that distinguish business driving from personal use.
A paper mileage logbook is one optional way to keep records; it is not required by the evidence here, and no specific tracking method is endorsed. Choose a method you can maintain consistently and retain the supporting records used for your tax return.
