Reliability ratings and long-term survival rates answer different questions. A reliability or dependability rating usually counts problems owners report (or predicts problems) during a defined ownership period. A survival estimate calculates how likely vehicles are to reach a mileage milestone such as 200,000 or 250,000 miles. A luxury model can score well on a three-year problem survey without having a published estimate of its odds of reaching 200,000 miles—and a model with a strong high-mileage survival estimate can still have frequent early infotainment or electronic complaints.
To compare claims intelligently, identify the outcome being measured, the vehicles and owners included, the observation period, the denominator, and whether the result is a peer-relative score or an estimated absolute probability. The figures below illustrate the distinction using J.D. Power’s 2026 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study and iSeeCars’ 2026 luxury and longest-lasting studies.

Reliability and survival measure different outcomes
What a reliability or dependability rating measures
A reliability score describes how often problems occur in a specified vehicle population and time window. Depending on the publisher, the input may be verified-owner survey reports, warranty claims, repair records, or a statistical prediction based on earlier years. The result is tied to the study’s definition of a problem: it may include defects, malfunctions, design flaws, or owner-reported symptoms, not only failures that stop a vehicle.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteBecause the observation window is limited, a reliability rating is best read as an early- or medium-term ownership signal. It can reveal whether owners of a particular model year are encountering more trouble than owners of competing vehicles, but it is not automatically a lifetime forecast.

What a long-term survival rate measures
A survival estimate asks a different question: what share of a vehicle population is expected to reach a specified age or odometer reading? A 250,000-mile estimate, for example, is a modeled probability of reaching that threshold. It does not count every defect along the way, and it does not say that a vehicle reaching the threshold will be inexpensive to maintain or in excellent condition.
Survival calculations depend heavily on the data and model used. A publisher may analyze odometer readings by vehicle age, account for how common each model is, and estimate the chance of crossing a mileage threshold. The resulting percentage is a population estimate, not a promise about a particular used car.
| Question | Reliability/dependability rating | Long-term survival estimate |
|---|---|---|
| Primary outcome | Problems, defects or malfunctions reported or predicted | Probability of reaching a stated age or mileage |
| Typical time frame | A defined ownership period, such as three years | Vehicle life up to a mileage milestone |
| Common unit | Problems per 100 vehicles (PP100), points or a 1–10 rating | Percentage probability of reaching the threshold |
| Best use | Comparing expected trouble among similar current models | Assessing population-level longevity potential |
| What it cannot establish alone | A specific car’s eventual mileage or repair cost | How many problems owners experience before the milestone |
What J.D. Power’s 2026 dependability study actually tells you
The cohort and observation period
J.D. Power’s 2026 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study surveyed 33,268 original owners of 2023 model-year vehicles after three years of ownership. Fieldwork ran from December 2024 through November 2025. The study covers 184 problem areas in nine categories.
That design makes the VDS a three-year ownership snapshot for a defined U.S. cohort. It does not follow vehicles until retirement, and it does not estimate the percentage that will reach 200,000 or 250,000 miles. The surveyed population is also original owners, so the results do not directly describe every second- or third-owner vehicle on the used market.
How to read PP100
J.D. Power reports problems per 100 vehicles, or PP100. The unit is a count of reported problems, not a failure percentage. A result of 204 PP100 means 204 reported problems for every 100 vehicles in that study population; some vehicles can have multiple problems and others none. Lower PP100 indicates higher vehicle quality in the study’s comparison.

The 2026 release reported an industry average of 204 PP100. Premium vehicles averaged 217 PP100—8 PP100 higher than the previous year and 17 PP100 above mass-market vehicles. Those figures describe reported problems in this particular three-year study; they are not odds of a vehicle surviving to a mileage target.
Why the overall J.D. Power score is not a pure reliability score
J.D. Power’s ratings methodology compares attributes with the average for a matching price range and vehicle-size peer group. Its overall consumer rating combines quality and reliability (40%), driving experience (20%), resale value (20%), and dealership experience (20%). Only the quality-and-reliability component is intended to capture owner-experienced defects, malfunctions and design flaws across areas such as the engine and infotainment system.
Consequently, an overall consumer score can rise because of driving experience, resale or dealership results even when its reliability component is ordinary. When your question is “How often do owners encounter problems?”, use the quality-and-reliability measure and its peer context rather than treating the composite as a direct longevity statistic.
How iSeeCars frames reliability and survival
The 200,000-mile luxury reliability rating
iSeeCars’ 2026 most reliable luxury cars ranking uses a 1-to-10 Reliability Rating. The page describes that rating as a calculation of useful lifespan and the vehicle’s ability to last 200,000 miles or more, drawing on the publisher’s longest-lasting-vehicle research.
This is not the same construct as J.D. Power’s PP100. The iSeeCars rating is a publisher-specific longevity-oriented score on a 1–10 scale; it is not a count of owner-reported problems during a fixed three-year period. Check the model, generation and powertrain behind the score before applying it to a particular vehicle.

The separate 250,000-mile probability study
iSeeCars’ longest-lasting-car-brands study analyzed more than 395 million cars. It calculated average odometer readings at each vehicle age and used a proprietary model to estimate the probability of reaching 250,000 miles. For brand comparisons, iSeeCars first calculated odds for specific models and generations, then averaged them across each brand’s lineup while weighting models by how common they were on the road.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →That weighting makes the result a brand-lineup estimate, not a guarantee for every model. A high-scoring brand can contain short-lived and long-lived powertrains, and a rare model may have a different result from the brand average.
| Luxury brand | Estimated chance of reaching 250,000 miles | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Lexus | 14.4% | iSeeCars’ 2026 population estimate, averaged across its lineup |
| Acura | 9.5% | iSeeCars’ 2026 population estimate, averaged across its lineup |
| Lincoln | 4.7% | iSeeCars’ 2026 population estimate, averaged across its lineup |
| Cadillac | 3.9% | iSeeCars’ 2026 population estimate, averaged across its lineup |
| Luxury-brand average | 3.4% | iSeeCars’ comparison average, not a vehicle-specific prediction |
These percentages are modeled estimates from mileage patterns. They are not the percentage of cars that passed a controlled durability test, and they do not account for the maintenance quality, accident history or present condition of the individual car you are considering.
Why a favorable rating can coexist with a modest survival estimate
Different denominators
PP100 uses problems per 100 vehicles. A survival result uses the share of vehicles estimated to cross a mileage threshold. Because the denominators and units differ, placing “217 PP100” next to “14.4%” does not create a meaningful head-to-head score. One counts reported events; the other estimates a milestone probability.
Different populations and owners
The VDS uses original owners of 2023 model-year vehicles in the United States after three years. A 250,000-mile model may incorporate vehicles of many ages, model years and ownership histories. Brand-level survival estimates also average across models according to how common they are in the vehicle population. A model-year-specific reliability result therefore cannot be expected to match a broad brand survival percentage.

Different failure and maintenance paths
Early complaints may involve software, displays, driver-assistance alerts, trim or other systems that affect satisfaction without preventing a car from accumulating miles. Conversely, a vehicle can avoid many minor complaints yet face an expensive engine, transmission, air-suspension or hybrid-battery repair later. A survival model may count the vehicle as reaching the threshold even though the owner paid substantial repair bills.
Peer-relative versus absolute-looking numbers
A peer rating tells you how a vehicle compares with similar price and size vehicles in that publisher’s framework. A survival percentage looks absolute, but it remains an estimate produced by a particular model and dataset. Neither type of number is a diagnosis of an individual used car.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical method for evaluating a specific luxury car
Use both kinds of evidence as separate inputs, then inspect the actual vehicle. Follow this sequence when researching a model you may buy:
- Name the exact vehicle. Record model year, generation, body style, engine, transmission, hybrid system and drivetrain. Do not substitute a brand average for the configuration you intend to own.
- Identify the outcome behind every score. Mark each claim as reported problems, predicted reliability, a 1–10 longevity rating, or a probability of reaching a mileage threshold. Reject comparisons that silently mix these categories.
- Write down the cohort and horizon. Note whether the evidence covers original owners, all observed vehicles, a three-year period or the vehicle’s full mileage history. A 2023 model-year, three-year survey is not a lifetime study.
- Check the unit and direction. For PP100, lower is better in J.D. Power’s VDS. For a 1–10 rating, verify the publisher’s scale. For survival, record the exact threshold—200,000 and 250,000 miles are not interchangeable.
- Separate model evidence from brand evidence. Use brand-level percentages only as context. Look for the exact model and generation because lineup averages can hide wide variation.
- Check what changed. A redesign, new engine, transmission, battery or infotainment architecture can make older reliability observations less applicable to the current model year.
- Inspect ownership records. For a used car, verify maintenance invoices, service intervals, recall completion, accident and title history, odometer consistency and the number of previous owners. A strong population statistic cannot compensate for skipped maintenance or severe damage.
- Get a condition-specific inspection. Have an independent technician scan electronic systems, inspect leaks and suspension, assess tires and brakes, and evaluate model-specific wear points. The inspection addresses the car in front of you; ratings only describe a population.
- Budget for age-related work. Estimate routine service and likely wear items separately from catastrophic repairs. Luxury parts, labor and electronics can cost more even when a vehicle’s problem frequency is average.
How to resolve apparently conflicting claims
When one article calls a model reliable and another gives it an unremarkable longevity figure, compare the claims in this order:
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstall- Outcome: Is one counting complaints while the other estimates survival?
- Population: Are the vehicles the same model, generation and powertrain, or is one a brand lineup?
- Observation period: Does one stop after three years while the other follows mileage over many vehicle ages?
- Threshold: Is the target 200,000 miles, 250,000 miles or no mileage threshold at all?
- Denominator: Are you looking at PP100, a rating scale or a percentage?
- Relative versus modeled absolute: Is the number a peer ranking or a statistical estimate?
- Condition: Does the evidence describe a population, while your purchase is one used vehicle with its own service history?
After this check, the claims often stop being contradictory: they are describing different stages or dimensions of ownership.

Common mistakes to avoid
Treating PP100 as a failure rate
PP100 can exceed 100 because each vehicle may generate multiple reports. It cannot be read as “the percentage of vehicles that failed.”
Turning a 1–10 longevity rating into a warranty
A top rating indicates a stronger result within that publisher’s calculation. It does not promise that every example will reach 200,000 miles or that repairs will be inexpensive.
Using a brand average to choose a particular trim
Brand averages combine models and generations, often weighted by how common they are. Confirm that the engine, transmission and generation in the ranking match the car you want.
Assuming high mileage means low ownership cost
Survival measures whether vehicles continue to accumulate miles, not the total money spent to keep them running. A high-mileage luxury car may require major suspension, cooling, emissions, electrical or drivetrain work.
Ignoring present condition
Two vehicles with the same model-year rating can have radically different outcomes because of maintenance, climate, accident damage, storage and driving use. Records and an inspection are essential for a used-car decision.
Which measure should answer your question?
| Your question | Most relevant evidence | Additional check |
|---|---|---|
| Will this new model have fewer early problems than rivals? | Model-specific quality-and-reliability results from a comparable cohort | Confirm model year, redesign status and powertrain |
| Could this vehicle plausibly reach 200,000 miles? | A longevity rating that explicitly uses the 200,000-mile outcome | Review maintenance requirements and long-term owner costs |
| How common is 250,000-mile survival across a brand? | A modeled 250,000-mile probability such as iSeeCars’ study | Find model- and generation-level results before drawing a conclusion |
| Should I buy this specific used car? | Model evidence for context | VIN history, service records, recall status and an independent inspection |
The useful way to combine the evidence
Start with reliability data to understand the kinds of problems owners report during the period covered. Use a mileage-based survival estimate to gauge whether vehicles of that type commonly remain in service to a distant threshold. Then narrow the result to the exact model year, generation and powertrain, and finally replace population assumptions with evidence from the individual car’s records and inspection.
That sequence prevents a common analytical error: treating a short-term problem score as a lifetime forecast or treating a survival percentage as proof that a vehicle is trouble-free. Reliability ratings describe reported or predicted trouble over a defined horizon; survival rates describe the estimated chance of reaching a mileage milestone. They complement each other only when their scopes, units and limitations remain explicit.
