If the money is already available, belongs in a suitable long-term portfolio, and you can stay invested through a near-term decline, investing it promptly has historically produced the better result more often than spreading purchases out. Vanguard’s 2023 analysis found lump-sum investing beat cost averaging (also called dollar-cost averaging) roughly two-thirds of the time. The trade-off is immediate exposure to a market drop. A staged schedule can reduce that early exposure and may help a loss-averse investor follow through, but the cash waiting to be invested can miss market returns.
This is a decision about deploying an existing balance, such as an inheritance, bonus, or sale proceeds. It is not the same as investing each paycheck as it arrives. Neither approach guarantees a profit, prevents losses, or substitutes for choosing an appropriate portfolio, account, emergency reserve, and time horizon first.

The short answer
Use the approach you can execute and maintain, after confirming that the money should be invested at all. For a properly allocated portfolio and a long horizon, the historical edge goes to lump sum because every dollar gets market exposure sooner. Choose a time-limited, precommitted schedule when investing the full amount immediately would make you freeze, delay indefinitely, or sell in panic after a fall.

| Decision factor | Lump sum | Dollar-cost averaging |
|---|---|---|
| When money enters the portfolio | The full available balance is invested immediately. | The balance is divided into installments over a chosen period. |
| Expected return in the historical comparison | Higher median wealth in Vanguard’s simulation and outperformed staging roughly two-thirds of the time in its historical analysis. | Lower average outcome in the analysis because some money remains in cash temporarily. |
| Exposure to an immediate decline | Highest on day one because the entire balance is invested. | Lower during the staging window because later installments remain in cash. |
| Behavioral consideration | Requires accepting the possibility of a large early loss without changing the plan. | Can reduce regret and loss-aversion pressure for some investors, but only if the schedule is completed. |
| Main cost | A downturn soon after entry can produce a worse short-term result. | Uninvested cash can miss the portfolio’s risk premium and growth. |
What each method actually means
Lump-sum investing
Lump-sum investing puts the entire balance into the portfolio allocation you have already selected. If $100,000 is available and your plan calls for a 60/40 stock-and-bond portfolio, the full $100,000 is deployed according to that allocation at once. The approach maximizes the time that the money can earn the portfolio’s returns, but it also means the whole balance participates if prices fall immediately afterward.

Dollar-cost averaging from a windfall
In this comparison, dollar-cost averaging means temporarily holding part of an available balance in cash and investing equal or otherwise predetermined installments. A three-month plan might invest one-third each month; a six-month plan might use six equal purchases. The schedule lowers exposure during the waiting period, not the underlying risk of the assets. If markets rise while cash is waiting, later installments buy at higher prices and the final result can lag a prompt investment.
Investing each paycheck is different
When you invest a fixed amount from every paycheck, each contribution becomes available at a different time. There is no previously available lump sum sitting in cash while you decide. Vanguard explicitly separates that ordinary cash-flow process from the choice of whether to deploy a windfall immediately or stage it.
What Vanguard’s evidence found
Vanguard’s paper Cost averaging: Invest now or temporarily hold your cash?, published in 2023, compares prompt investment with cost averaging across historical markets and simulated outcomes. Its conclusion is a relative tendency, not a forecast for your next year or a probability guarantee.

| Lump sum versus cost averaging | Lump sum outperformed roughly two-thirds of the time. | Vanguard’s historical comparisons summarized in the 2023 paper; future periods can differ. |
| U.S. stocks versus three-month U.S. Treasury bills | Stocks outperformed 76% of the time. | Vanguard analysis covering 1976–2022. |
| U.S. bonds versus three-month U.S. Treasury bills | Bonds outperformed 68% of the time. | Vanguard analysis covering 1976–2022. |
The stock and bond comparisons illustrate the opportunity cost of waiting. When a diversified portfolio earns more than cash, the portion left uninvested does not receive that excess return. Cash can outperform during some periods, so the result is not guaranteed in either direction.
Illustrated $100,000 simulation
Vanguard also modeled a hypothetical $100,000 starting portfolio with a 60/40 stock-and-bond mix, equal monthly installments, and 0% interest on the cash awaiting investment. After one year, the three-month staging strategy finished $504 below lump sum in the example; six-month staging finished $1,491 below. These are simulation outputs under the stated assumptions, not forecasts or expected losses for every investor.

| Strategy in the simulation | Difference from lump sum after one year | Assumptions |
|---|---|---|
| Three-month staging | $504 lower | $100,000 starting balance; 60/40 portfolio; equal monthly installments; 0% cash interest. |
| Six-month staging | $1,491 lower | $100,000 starting balance; 60/40 portfolio; equal monthly installments; 0% cash interest. |
The simulated distribution also showed the trade-off clearly: lump sum had both a higher 95th-percentile outcome and a lower 5th-percentile outcome than cost averaging. More time in the market increased the range of possible results as well as the median.
Why investing sooner usually has the return advantage
A diversified portfolio is expected to compensate investors for accepting market risk. Money held in cash during a staging period cannot earn the stock or bond returns that may occur during that interval. The longer the delay, and the higher the return on the chosen portfolio compared with cash, the larger the potential opportunity cost.
This is why “time in the market” matters in the comparison. Lump sum maximizes the period in which every dollar can compound. Vanguard authors Finlay and Zorn summarize the mechanism this way: “Lump-sum investing maximizes time in the market, and thus growth potential, versus cost averaging.” That statement describes expected exposure, not a promise that markets will rise after you invest.
What happens if the market drops immediately?
A fall immediately after a lump-sum purchase can make the decision feel wrong even when the portfolio and horizon remain appropriate. The entire balance is exposed from the first day, so the dollar loss can be larger than it would have been under a schedule that had not yet invested all installments.
With staging, an early decline can make the first purchases look better and leave later cash available at lower prices. But a staged investor can also face a rising market, in which case the later purchases cost more and the cash drag reduces the final value. The schedule changes the path of returns; it does not remove market risk.

A precommitted response plan
- Write down the allocation, the investment dates, and the conditions that would cause a genuine change, such as a change in the money’s purpose or time horizon.
- Decide in advance that a normal market decline is not a reason to abandon the allocation.
- Check the portfolio on the dates required to execute the plan rather than reacting to headlines.
- If the decline reveals that the allocation was unsuitable, reassess the allocation deliberately instead of switching between lump sum and staging as a panic response.
Does dollar-cost averaging reduce risk?
It reduces the portfolio’s exposure during the period when the money has not yet been invested. That can reduce the size of an immediate mark-to-market loss on the still-cash portion. It does not guarantee a lower purchase price, prevent a loss, or make the eventual portfolio safe. Vanguard cautions that dollar-cost averaging cannot guarantee a profit or protect against losses when prices fall.
The relevant distinction is temporary path risk versus long-term investment risk. Staging can make the first weeks or months feel less severe, while leaving the investor with the same asset allocation once the schedule ends. If the schedule is never completed because prices rise or anxiety persists, the investor may remain underinvested for much longer than intended.
Behavior can be as important as the arithmetic
The mathematically higher expected outcome is useful only if you can stick with it. Vanguard identifies loss aversion and regret as reasons an investor may prefer cost averaging. Someone who would invest a lump sum, see a sharp decline, and then sell or stop investing may be better served by a written, short schedule that gets the money into the target portfolio.
That is a behavioral compromise, not evidence that staging has superior returns. The schedule should have a fixed end date and automatic instructions where possible. An open-ended rule such as “I will invest when the market feels safer” is not dollar-cost averaging; it is market timing with no defined exit.
Check the foundations before choosing a method
Timing cannot repair an unsuitable investment plan. Work through these questions before deciding how fast to deploy the balance.

What is the money for?
Confirm that the balance is intended for an investment portfolio rather than a near-term bill, a required reserve, or a goal that cannot tolerate market volatility. Vanguard’s cash framework emphasizes the goal, time horizon, and risk tolerance when deciding how much to keep in cash.
Is the allocation appropriate?
Choose the stock, bond, and cash mix before debating entry timing. Lump sum versus staging does not determine diversification, risk capacity, or the account that holds the assets. If you cannot explain why the selected allocation fits the goal and horizon, solve that problem first.
Can you tolerate an immediate decline?
Imagine the account showing a substantial short-term loss soon after investment. If the likely response is to sell, stop contributions, or postpone indefinitely, a defined schedule may improve the chance of remaining invested. If you can accept the volatility and follow the plan, the historical evidence favors prompt deployment.
What return will waiting cash earn?
The opportunity cost depends partly on the cash yield during the staging period. Vanguard’s illustrative simulation assumed 0% cash interest; that assumption is specific to the example and should not be generalized to current cash rates. A higher cash yield can reduce, but not automatically eliminate, the gap between waiting and investing.

How to implement a lump sum
- Separate reserves from investable money. Keep the amount needed for the stated purpose and emergency needs outside the portfolio.
- Document the target allocation. Record the percentages and the account in which the money will be invested.
- Invest the full available balance. Use the account’s normal purchase process and apply the allocation rather than making an improvised market bet.
- Set a review rule. Review on a scheduled basis or when the goal, horizon, or risk tolerance changes; do not make a new decision solely because prices moved.
- Continue ordinary contributions. Treat future paycheck investments as new cash flows, separate from the windfall decision.
How to implement a staged schedule without turning it into market timing
- Select the duration before observing prices. Vanguard’s illustration used three- and six-month schedules; those periods are examples, not universally optimal choices.
- Set equal or otherwise specified installments. Write the dollar amount and date for every purchase so the plan does not depend on a forecast.
- Keep the waiting cash in the selected low-risk holding. Record the actual yield because the 0% assumption in Vanguard’s simulation may not match your account.
- Automate each purchase. Automation limits the temptation to postpone an installment after a market rise or fall.
- Finish on the end date. Do not extend the schedule because the market has become uncomfortable; changing the end date is a new timing decision.
Common situations
Inheritance
An inheritance is a classic lump-sum decision: the balance is available now, but the recipient still needs to establish the goal, reserve, allocation, and horizon. Prompt investment has the historical edge when those foundations are sound; a short written schedule can be reasonable if immediate volatility would otherwise cause paralysis.
Best Value
Bonus or sale proceeds
A bonus or proceeds from a sale create the same choice if the full amount has cleared and is intended for a long-term portfolio. Do not treat a staged plan as a guarantee that the market will offer a cheaper entry. The cash may earn less than the portfolio while you wait.
Regular salary contributions
Investing each payday is not a delayed lump sum. The money did not exist in your account at the start of a multi-month window, so investing it when received gives each contribution market exposure as soon as it is available.
Limits of the evidence
The central study is Vanguard research published in 2023. Its historical results depend on the markets, periods, return assumptions, and implementation examined, while its simulations are hypothetical. The roughly two-thirds result describes how often lump sum won in the analyzed comparisons; it is not a promise about a particular market, country, asset mix, or future period.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe comparison also assumes that the investor has already decided the money belongs in a portfolio and has selected an appropriate allocation. It does not establish a universally best schedule, predict near-term market direction, or provide personalized financial advice. Fees, taxes, account rules, and local regulations can affect an individual implementation and are not determined by the lump-sum-versus-staging choice alone.
A decision checklist
- The balance is genuinely available for a long-term investment goal.
- An emergency reserve and near-term spending needs are handled separately.
- The target allocation fits the goal, horizon, and tolerance for loss.
- You understand that lump sum can lose more immediately after entry.
- You understand that staging can miss returns while cash waits.
- If staging, you have a fixed duration, installment amounts, and end date.
- If markets fall, you have a written response rather than a headline-driven reaction.
- You will distinguish this windfall decision from investing future paychecks.
Bottom line
For an investable lump sum and a suitable long-term portfolio, investing promptly has historically been the higher-probability choice because it keeps the money exposed to expected market returns. Dollar-cost averaging is mainly a risk-and-behavior tool: it can soften the immediate experience of a downturn and help a loss-averse investor stay committed, at the cost of leaving some money in cash. Choose the method you can complete without abandoning the portfolio, and make the schedule—if you use one—specific, short, and automatic.
