He told 6PR that the Thursday meeting included no discussion or footage of the late collapse against Brisbane; he was unsure whether the club would watch it in pre-season, but said the team would need to learn from the defeat.
What Ryan said Fremantle reviewed
Ryan described the meeting as a review of the entire finals campaign rather than a focused review of the Grand Final. As The West Australian reported on 3 October 2026, the group discussed the qualifying final against Hawthorn, which Ryan said they “got wrong,” as well as things they did well against Geelong in the semifinal and against Sydney.

That distinction matters: Ryan was describing what happened in the team meeting, not saying Fremantle would avoid reviewing the Grand Final’s finish altogether.
Did Fremantle review the last quarter?
Not in that Thursday meeting, according to Ryan. He said the final quarter was not discussed and no footage from it was shown. He did not know whether the team would watch it during pre-season.

Ryan said the players would still need to draw lessons from the loss, whether through video, discussion or a new strategy. His account leaves open how the club will examine the late sequence later; it does not establish that a further review has been scheduled.
Why the defeat was so difficult to process
Brisbane beat Fremantle 96–89 in the Grand Final on 26 September 2026. ABC News’ match report described a late comeback after Fremantle had controlled clearances, territory and aerial contests for much of the day.
With 197 seconds remaining, Fremantle led by 17 points after Patrick Voss kicked a set shot. Brisbane then kicked four late goals, according to The West Australian. Ryan said the closeness made the loss hard to put aside in the following week: “You can’t really block it out, just because of how close we were.”

Ryan’s comments pointed to continuity and gradual improvement rather than a wholesale overhaul. He said Fremantle had foundations and the confidence to belong on the biggest stage, and framed the longer-term aim as sustained top-four contention—not simply reaching one Grand Final.

He described the scale of improvement in deliberately modest terms: “We don’t need to get 20 per cent (better), we can go one, two, three per cent and hopefully sustain that for a long time.” Those percentages were Ryan’s expression of an approach, not a measured performance target.
Ryan’s account therefore gives a limited but clear picture of the immediate review: Fremantle examined its September campaign broadly, while leaving the Grand Final’s final quarter for possible later learning. It does not say whether or when that specific footage will be reviewed.
