Machhiwara police have booked three people in connection with alleged forged documents used in an attempted sale of 53 kanals of land in Udhowal Khurd, according to a Hindustan Times report published on October 2, 2026. The allegations are under investigation; the report does not establish guilt or determine ownership of the land.
Who was booked and what land is involved?
The report names Mahinderpal Singh of Khanna, Iqbal Singh of Machhiwara and Karnail Singh, identified as Udhowal village’s lambardar. The case concerns 53 kanals of land in Udhowal Khurd, described in the report as worth crores of rupees.

What is the dispute over the land records?
Complainant Ashu Gulati said her mother, Saroj Handa, bought the land in 1981 and was named in older revenue records. Gulati disputed a 2001 jamabandi entry that named “Saroj Rani, wife of Janak Handa,” saying that name did not identify her mother.
According to the complaint as reported, the disputed entry was used to prepare a purported power of attorney in favour of Mahinderpal Singh. The document identified “Saroj Rani” as a resident of Brampton, Canada. Gulati said her mother lived in the United States and died there on June 8, 2018.

What does the complaint allege about a sale?
Gulati alleged that Mahinderpal used the purported power of attorney to sell the property to Iqbal Singh, and that the two colluded to acquire it. The report does not establish whether a legally effective transfer took place.
Gulati also claimed that neither Mahinderpal nor Iqbal possessed the land and that a Machhiwara farmer had cultivated it for several years. The report does not independently determine who possessed or cultivated the property.

What are police investigating?
Machhiwara SHO Karamjit Singh said police had examined documents submitted by the parties and were verifying their authenticity. The inquiry was also examining the circumstances around the reported transfer and whether others were involved.
The Hindustan Times report describes an ongoing investigation, not a court finding. It provides no final investigation result or subsequent ruling on guilt, ownership, possession or the legal effect of the disputed documents.
