Six inmates were reportedly booked after two prisoners in Ludhiana Central Jail were allegedly assaulted and threatened over a ₹2 lakh demand. News reports say investigators are examining how a mobile phone entered the jail and whether anyone outside was involved. The case remains an allegation under investigation; the reports do not establish guilt, and they differ on whether the money was actually paid.
What is alleged to have happened?
According to reports published by Hindustan Times, The Tribune and The Times of India, two prisoners, Rupesh Puri and Neeraj Adya, had recently been lodged in Barrack 6 of Ludhiana Central Jail. The complaint was that they were assaulted and threatened, and that ₹2 lakh was demanded from them.
The reports say Neeraj was allegedly given a phone to contact a friend outside and arrange or deliver money to an associate near Alamgir Road. Jail officials reportedly searched a barrack and recovered a keypad phone and SIM card from Harsimran Singh Mand. These details are reported accounts of the complaint and search, not independently established findings.
Was the money paid?
The news accounts are not consistent on this point. Hindustan Times describes a demand and a request to deliver money, while The Tribune says the amount was to be handed over. The Times of India reports that the FIR stated the friend subsequently handed over cash. Because the accounts differ, payment should not be treated as confirmed without further authoritative documentation.
