That allows entry, not use of storage, upkeep payments, or decorating. Kinship members have a separate Visit option for your designated Primary Residence, while NPC Neighbours use a special invitation item placed on a housing hook.
How do I allow my friends to visit my house?
- While at your home, open the Housing Management panel and go to Permissions.
- Choose the Individual option to add the specific character you want to admit.
- Enable Visitor for that character to allow entry.
- Grant other permissions only if you want the character to have those additional abilities.
The Standing Stone Games housing FAQ describes permissions as separate controls. It does not say that adding someone to your in-game Friends list alone grants house access, so use the house’s explicit permission settings.

What does Visitor permission let someone do?
Visitor means entry. It does not, by itself, let a visitor access housing chests, pay upkeep, change decorations, or manage permissions. The housing FAQ lists Housing Chests, Upkeep, Decorate, and Manage Permissions as distinct controls. Enable one of those separately only when you intend to grant that capability.

How can a kinship member visit a home?
You can designate one property as your Primary Residence, then a kinship member can use the Visit button in the Social Kinship panel to travel to it. The Update 27 release notes state that only one property can be primary at a time and that kinship properties cannot be selected. This is a kinship travel route, distinct from granting an individual Visitor permission.

How do NPC Neighbours visit?
NPC Neighbours are not player visitors. LOTRO’s August 2, 2026 Neighbours overview describes placing a neighbour’s special item on a housing hook as an invitation for that character to visit. The article presents the system as part of The Wolves of Mordor pre-release offerings; it does not establish whether the expansion or every described feature was live on October 4, 2026.
What the announced Neighbours system includes
The overview describes introductions to representatives of the four primary Free Peoples, conversations, gifts, relationship stages, personal story instances, and five daily Neighbour Missions. Completing missions lets players share stories with a neighbour; different neighbours respond according to their preferences. A later September 23, 2026 guide adds that matching stories to a neighbour’s interests can strengthen friendship, while a poor match may slow progress or sour the neighbour’s mood. It also describes gifts, daily visits, milestone story adventures, and possible rewards including crafting materials and traceries.

The two official descriptions differ on the trait count: the earlier overview says 20 personality traits, while the later guide says 21. The newer guide gives the latest published figure, but the discrepancy is unresolved in those sources.
Which visit option should you use?
| Visitor | How access is arranged | What it provides |
|---|---|---|
| Player friend | Add the character under house Permissions and enable Visitor. | Entry. Storage, upkeep, decorating, and permission management are separate controls. |
| Kinship member | Set a Primary Residence; the member uses Visit in the Social Kinship panel. | A kinship-specific route to the designated primary home. |
| NPC Neighbour | Place that neighbour’s special invitation item on a housing hook. | An invitation for the NPC character to visit, as described in the announced Neighbours system. |
The documented functions are clear, though menu labels may change over time: the housing FAQ and kinship instructions come from earlier game documentation. For new neighborhoods, Update 48.1 notes that Rivendell Steadings opened on 64-bit worlds on April 30, 2026, and that neighborhoods open automatically after enough homes in existing neighborhoods are purchased; see the Update 48.1 release notes.
