Open Find My on an Apple device signed in to the Apple Account used to pair your AirPods. Select Devices, choose the AirPods, then check the map and available actions. Depending on the model and connection status, you may be able to play a sound, use Find Nearby, get directions to a mapped location, or show contact information to a finder. Find My must have been enabled before the AirPods went missing; a map pin is a search clue, not proof of who has them.
How to search for your missing AirPods
- Open Find My. On an Apple device signed in to the Apple Account used to pair the AirPods, open Find My and tap Devices. Select the missing AirPods. Apple also describes access through iCloud.com/find, though the web experience may offer fewer features.
- Check which component is missing. If the AirPods are separated, Find My may let you select the left or right earbud. Newer supported models may also let you mark a bud or case separately; availability depends on the precise model and case variant.
- Choose an available action. Use Play Sound to search nearby. If Find My offers Find Nearby, follow its guidance. If the map shows a farther location, tap Directions to open it in Maps.
- Mark supported AirPods as lost. Select the AirPods and look for Lost Mode or Show Contact Info in the lost-device controls. Follow the prompts to add contact details. These controls require Find My network to have been enabled before the loss.
Apple’s current Find My feature matrix lists capabilities by model, including View Location, Play Sound, Find Nearby, Show Contact Info, notifications, and Find My Lock. It lists AirPods 1, AirPods 2, and AirPods 4 among models with View Location and Play Sound; a broader set of features is listed for AirPods 3, AirPods 4 with ANC, AirPods Pro models, and AirPods Max. Availability can vary by country or region, so check the current matrix against the exact model rather than assuming every AirPods generation has the same controls.

What Offline or No Location Found means
When AirPods are out of range or need charging, Find My may show their last-known location. You may be able to get directions to that place, but Play Sound and Find Nearby may be unavailable while the earbuds are offline. If they reconnect, a notification may appear on an Apple device used with them. This is not continuous live tracking, and a displayed location does not establish that the AirPods are still there or identify whoever may have them. If you think your AirPods were stolen
Do not confront someone based on a Find My location. The location can help you decide where to search, but it does not prove who has the earbuds. Apple’s support guidance does not promise a specific recovery process for stolen AirPods or guarantee that law enforcement can retrieve them. If you feel your safety is at risk, Apple says to contact local law enforcement, which can work with Apple to request information related to an item. That statement appears in Apple’s unwanted-tracking guidance; it is not a guarantee of recovery for stolen AirPods.

To check whether separated AirPods or a supported tracking accessory can be identified, open Find My, tap Items, scroll down, and tap Identify Found Item. The flow may provide information, but it does not guarantee that you can identify or contact the owner in every case. If you believe a device is being used to track someone unlawfully, Apple says law enforcement can request information available to Apple through its safety guidance.
