Ink Drops are Disney Lorcana‘s new resource mechanic in Hyperia City. A drop goes into your inkwell and can be removed to generate one ink, which is close to what a Treasure token does in Magic: The Gathering. The difference is that Lorcana cards care about Ink Drops in specific ways: they create them through particular actions, reward having one in the inkwell, or pay off spending one. That is where the mechanic becomes more than a generic ramp tool.
How Ink Drops work
According to a recent preview of the set, Ink Drops are added to your inkwell, and a drop can be removed from the inkwell to generate one ink. The practical effect is acceleration: you can spend a drop to play a more expensive card earlier than your normal ink total would allow, or you can hold it for a card that rewards keeping or spending it at a specific moment.

The surface comparison is useful. Both mechanics give you an extra resource that helps you cast spells sooner. The preview argues that the more important distinction lies in how cards interact with the resource, not in the resource itself. The table below uses the four comparison points the preview draws out.
#1 Best Overall
- WELCOME TO THE ILLUMINARY: Designed to introduce Disney Lorcana through exciting new gameplay mechanics, this starter set teaches core rules and strategy using curated decks built for an approachable, balanced learning experience.
- START YOUR JOURNEY: If you are new to Disney Lorcana, 2-player starters sets are the place to begin. The 2 included decks are built to give you and a friend a well-balanced and fun gameplay experience right out of the box.
- DIFFERENT PLAY STYLES: The Amber-Emerald deck is for those who love cards that “play nice” together allowing for more card draw. But if a player prefers something more daring and heroic, the Amethyst-Ruby deck is made to help save the day.
- BUILT FOR CASUAL AND FAMILY PLAY: Structured for smooth, out-of-the-box gameplay, the two decks offer a balanced a balanced experience for first-time players exploring the game.
- COMPONENTS INCLUDE: A 2-player starter set includes 2 decks containing 60 cards (including 2 foil cards in each), 13 damage tokens, 2 lore trackers, and 1 rulebook.
| Comparison point | Magic: The Gathering Treasure token | Lorcana Ink Drop (Hyperia City) |
|---|---|---|
| Base conversion | An artifact that can be sacrificed for one mana of any color | Removed from the inkwell to generate one ink |
| How cards create it | Created by cards that make Treasure tokens | Generated through actions such as movement, questing, playing characters, and challenges |
| Beyond acceleration | Primarily a source of mana for casting spells | Cards that care about a drop being present in the inkwell or spent for an added effect |
| Set-specific identity | Not applicable to this comparison | Examples grouped around Emerald Super characters, Steel movement and combat, and Amethyst Shift and value effects |
The Treasure comparison is a useful starting point. It is incomplete, because a Lorcana drop often comes with a condition attached, and the condition is where the card design lives.
Cards that create Ink Drops
The preview groups its examples by ink color and by the action that produces the drop. Each example below is described as the preview presents it; none has been tested in play for this article.

Emerald: Super characters
Fred – Awesome Boss is described as generating an Ink Drop whenever a Super character is played. The preview also mentions Go Go Tomago – Extreme Tester and Baymax – Lab Assistant as further Super-oriented interactions, and ties the theme to the Super characters from Big Hero 6 and some older cards.
Steel: movement
Central Station – Transportation Hub is described as creating a drop when a character moves there. Arthur – Novice Assistant is described as moving to a location and generating a drop. The preview presents this as a repeatable engine when several locations are in play, since each move can produce another drop.

Amethyst: Merlin
Merlin, Bauble Expert is described as generating a drop when an Arthur is in play. Merlin – Ink Drop Tinkerer is described as adding two more drops when shifted. Together, the preview says, they can produce a three-drop sequence. That is a description of what the cards can do on paper, not a recorded game result.

Cards that reward having or spending Ink Drops
The more distinctive part of the mechanic is payoff. The preview names two examples. Madam Mim – Resourceful Trickster rewards cashing in drops with card draw. Jousting Match is an action whose damage increases when you pay for it with one or more drops. These cards turn a drop from a simple ink source into a decision: spend it now for the ink, or keep it for a card that wants it later.
An illustrative Steel-Amethyst build
The preview’s suggested deck pairs Steel’s Arthur and location interactions with Amethyst’s Merlin cards. It is best read as a clear example of how the mechanic’s synergies fit together. The preview itself notes that it has not established this as the strongest competitive deck, and that further play would be needed to judge that. Treat it as a starting point for experimentation rather than a proven build.
