Loot boxes sell a chance at a randomized reward; battle passes sell access to a reward track that usually takes time to complete; and in-game currency can make both offers harder to price in real money. There is no universal price for any of them. To compare an offer, check what you receive, what you must spend in your region, how much play it requires, and whether it expires.
How loot boxes work
A loot box is a container or reward mechanic whose contents are randomized. You may earn one through play or acquire it with real money, virtual currency, or a combination. Before opening it, you generally do not know the exact item you will receive. Some publishers disclose probabilities for individual items or categories, but disclosure formats and detail vary. See the House of Commons Library briefing on loot boxes and the Federal Trade Commission’s discussion of consumer issues surrounding loot boxes.

There is no meaningful cross-game price for a loot box: the cost depends on the specific game and whether the box is earned, bought directly, or bought with currency that itself requires a purchase. Check the price of the box and any separate key or currency requirement, then inspect the reward pool and odds before spending. FTC workshop participants raised concerns about whether players understand costs and odds and about marketing to children; the FTC’s 2020 summary records differing views on whether regulation was warranted. Those concerns do not establish that every player is harmed.

A battle pass is generally a seasonal or time-bounded reward track. A game may offer a free track and a paid premium track, or require a purchase to access premium rewards. The rewards are more visible than the contents of a loot box, but obtaining them can require sustained play, XP, or other progression before the season ends. A pass therefore has both a possible money cost and a time cost.

Fortnite as a dated example
As of October 3, 2026, Epic’s Fortnite Battle Pass support page lists the Battle Pass at 800 V-Bucks, the LEGO Pass at 1,200 V-Bucks, the OG Pass at 800 V-Bucks, and the Music Pass at 1,200 V-Bucks. These are V-Bucks amounts, not fixed real-money prices. Epic says active passes last one season and progress through XP earned by playing Fortnite experiences. The Battle Pass may include outfits, V-Bucks, emotes, and other rewards. These terms are a Fortnite snapshot, not a general battle-pass price or rule.
Epic also says active passes progress simultaneously when you earn XP, but each pass needs a separate purchase to unlock its premium rewards. Fortnite Crew includes active passes while the subscription applies. Compare a subscription with separate purchases only against the passes you expect to use and the current subscription terms. See Epic’s support information on Fortnite pass progression and access.

How in-game currency changes the price
Many games let players buy virtual currency with real money and then spend that balance on in-game items. Some games also let players earn currency through play, so the exact earning and spending rules must be checked for the title in question. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s 2024 spotlight on video games describes marketplaces where consumers buy assets using fiat currency and use those assets to make in-game purchases.

- Work out which bundle or combination of bundles you would actually need to buy enough currency.
- Count any balance left over after the purchase. It is not a discount on the item unless you can use that remainder for something you want.
- Check whether the item is available directly, earnable through play, or obtainable only through a randomized reward.
- Verify current local bundle prices and terms in the game or store before buying; bundles and prices can change.
Bundle pricing can make per-unit comparisons misleading. A European Commission staff working document from 2024 reported that, among the cases it examined where in-game currency was available, 61.5% had a lower per-unit price when consumers bought currency in bundles. That is a finding about the document’s examined cases, not a rate for all games or today’s market. The same document reported that 67.9% of examined games included the possibility of in-game purchases; upfront information about in-game purchases appeared in 53.8% of examined PC-game cases and 42.9% of examined mobile-game cases. Loot boxes or similar virtual items, including passes granting access to levels, appeared in 30% of examined cases, generally without clear information about contents. These percentages describe the Commission document’s 2024 sample, not the entire games market.

Compare the offer before paying
| What to compare | Loot box | Battle pass | Currency purchase or direct shop item |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reward certainty | The exact contents are randomized. | Rewards are generally listed, but must be unlocked under the pass rules. | A direct item is defined by the game’s offer; currency may add a conversion step. |
| Money cost | May be earned or paid for; include any key or currency cost. | Check the pass price, any subscription alternative, and any paid progression. | Convert the required amount into real-money bundle costs and account for the remainder. |
| Time cost | May require play to earn; paying may bypass some earning. | Often requires play or XP before the season ends. | Usually less progression-dependent, though this varies by game. |
| Expiry | Check whether the box or its reward pool is time-limited. | Check the season end and reward deadline. | Check shop rotation or offer expiry. |
| Information to check | Reward pool and odds before paying. | Reward list and progression conditions. | Total local-currency cost and bundle conditions. |
This comparison is a framework, not a claim that every game uses the same rules. Confirm the details in the game’s current official terms, especially when rewards expire or the offer uses a randomized pool.

Gambling law and loot boxes
Legal treatment depends on the jurisdiction and the specific mechanics. The House of Commons Library’s August 2024 briefing says the UK Gambling Commission has stated that the Gambling Act 2005 does not cover loot boxes, so it cannot use its gambling-law powers to act on them. That is a UK-specific account of the Commission’s position; it does not settle the legal treatment elsewhere or mean that other consumer-protection rules do not apply.

Spending safeguards and evidence
The UK government says children and young people should not be able to buy loot boxes unless a parent or guardian enables them, and calls for spending controls and transparent information for all players. Its guidance says consumer-law transparency applies to in-game economic decisions, including the purchase and use of currency bought with real-world money. These are UK government policy statements and guidance, not a universal description of law or proof that every publisher implements the same controls.

The UK Department for Culture, Media and Sport reports an association between loot-box purchases and problem gambling, but says evidence has not established causation. An association should not be read as proof that buying loot boxes causes problem gambling. A 2023 European Parliament resolution says the real-world value of virtual currency should be clearly and prominently indicated for each purchase. That is the resolution’s policy position; the resolution alone should not be treated as a complete statement of binding legal obligations. See the European Parliament resolution on consumer protection in online video games.
Publisher policies have limited scope
Publisher safeguards should be read according to their stated scope. For example, Xbox says every loot box in games from Xbox Game Studios will provide an item with in-game worth equal to or greater than the amount paid. That is an Xbox policy for Xbox Game Studios games, not an industry-wide guarantee. The policy is described in the Xbox explanation of its approach to gambling-related risks in games.
The CFPB also discusses theft, scams, unauthorized transactions, limited recourse, and the use of player data to personalize incentives and monetize gameplay. These are risks the Bureau identifies in gaming markets; they should not be assumed to occur in every game or transaction. For any purchase, use the platform’s account and spending controls where available, and review the transaction and refund rules that apply to your platform and region.
