Yes—you can see another galaxy without a telescope. The target is the Andromeda Galaxy, also known as Messier 31 (M31), about 2.5 million light-years away. Under a dark, clear sky it appears to unaided eyes as a faint, elongated haze. On Thursday, October 15, 2026, the best viewing window begins after the Moon sets at about 9:00 p.m. EDT (0100 GMT on October 16), although the exact time and altitude depend on your location.
What you are seeing
Andromeda is the nearest major galaxy to the Milky Way. NASA lists it in the constellation Andromeda, at a distance of roughly 2.5 million light-years and an apparent magnitude of 3.1. NASA’s October observing guide describes the unaided-eye view more conservatively as a 3.4-magnitude patch of haze. Those figures describe an extended object: its light is spread across a large area, so it looks much dimmer than a similarly bright point star.

Do not expect a spiral photograph. From the ground, M31 looks like a soft, gray-white, slightly elongated glow. The bright central region is easiest to detect; the faint outer disk disappears first when artificial light, smoke, haze or thin cloud brightens the sky.

Choose the darker part of the night
Wait until the Moon has set—about 9:00 p.m. EDT on October 15 (0100 GMT October 16), according to Space.com’s October 2026 sky calendar. Local moonset, weather and the galaxy’s altitude vary with latitude and longitude. Give your eyes at least 15 to 20 minutes away from white lights, and keep a bright phone screen covered or dimmed.

Use Cassiopeia as an arrow
- Face northeast and locate Cassiopeia, the conspicuous five-star “W.”
- Use the right-hand side of the W as a downward-pointing guide toward Andromeda.
- Scan along that line for a broad, dim oval of light rather than a sharp star.
Or start at Mirach
Find Mirach, a bright star in Andromeda. Move upward through the neighboring stars by roughly two star-to-star steps; M31 lies beyond them. Binoculars make this hop easier, but the alignment can be followed with unaided eyes from a dark site.
What each observing method reveals
| Method | Sky conditions | Field of view | Visible detail | Portability and cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Unaided eyes | Dark, clear skies are strongly preferred; moderate light pollution may leave the core | Widest | Faint fuzzy or elongated patch | Most portable; no equipment cost |
| 10×50-style binoculars | Dark skies improve the view, but the brighter core can remain detectable from some suburbs | Wide enough to frame much of M31 | Bright core and part of the disk | Portable; optional moderate purchase |
| Small telescope | Darkness still matters, especially for the outer disk | Narrower; the entire galaxy may not fit at once | Higher magnification can show more structure and satellite galaxies | Less portable and higher cost |
Binoculars are the simplest upgrade because they collect more light while retaining a broad view. A telescope increases magnification, but its narrower field can crop Andromeda’s full span; higher power is not automatically a better first view.

Why darkness matters more than magnification
Human vision can detect M31’s integrated glow, but it cannot recover contrast lost to skyglow. Choose a rural site, shield your eyes from nearby lamps and observe when the air is transparent. A clear forecast is not enough if smoke or humidity creates a bright veil. From a city, you may see only the core—or nothing at all—while a dark location can reveal a longer, softer disk without any instrument.
- Let your eyes adapt before judging the view.
- Use averted vision: look slightly to the side of the suspected glow, where the eye is more sensitive to faint light.
- Check the same area repeatedly; the haze may appear and fade as your gaze shifts.
- Do not mistake a photograph-like, high-contrast spiral for the normal visual appearance.
Andromeda is changing, not merely a smudge
NASA’s Hubble team reported on July 27, 2026 (updated August 13) that the PHAT and PHAST surveys measured about 200 million individual stars in Andromeda. By reconstructing those stars’ ages and properties, the study traced how the galaxy’s star formation has slowed.

- 114MM REFLECTOR WITH IMPRESSIVE VIEWS: The 4.5" Newtonian reflector with high-reflectivity coatings delivers sharp, vivid views of the Moon, planets like Jupiter and Saturn, and deep-sky favorites like the Orion Nebula and Andromeda Galaxy.
Andromeda formed stars at about one solar mass per year 500 million years ago, about half that rate 40 million years ago, and about one-fifth of a solar mass per year today. Much of its recent activity is concentrated in a star-forming ring roughly 32,000 light-years from the center.
NASA astronomer and study co-author Ben Williams explained why resolving individual stars matters: “We need to measure the individual stars because they are the fossil record of the galaxy’s formation. Hubble is the only telescope that can give you high enough spatial resolution over a large enough area to be able to do that in Andromeda.”

Lead author Tobin Wainer compared the slowdown to recovery after exertion: “It’s just like after running a marathon, sometimes you’ve got to take a bit of a breather.” Co-author Raja GuhaThakurta noted that Andromeda is close enough for detailed study while still providing a galaxy-wide perspective.

- Check local cloud, smoke and moonset conditions.
- Travel to the darkest safe site available and let your eyes adapt.
- Face northeast after about 9:00 p.m. EDT, adjusting for your local time zone and horizon.
- Find Cassiopeia’s W or the star Mirach, then follow the star hop.
- Look first with your eyes; add 10×50 binoculars if you have them.
- Use a small telescope only when you want extra structure and accept that the full galaxy may not fit in one view.
At its best, the sight is subtle: a detached glow from a whole galaxy whose light began traveling toward Earth 2.5 million years ago. That faint patch is the direct, unaided visual evidence that another galaxy is there.
