Longhorn and NFS are not always competing choices: Longhorn’s generic ReadWriteMany (RWX) volumes use NFSv4.1 behind the scenes, while a separately provisioned NFS share is another way to give Kubernetes workloads shared files. Which is simpler depends on your access pattern, existing infrastructure, and who will operate the NFS server—not on a performance advantage established by the available documentation.
First, separate the two meanings of “Longhorn versus NFS”
Longhorn volumes attach to a Linux node as block devices. For shared filesystem access, Longhorn’s generic, non-migratable RWX volumes run an NFSv4.1 server in a share-manager-<volume-name> pod and expose it through a Service. NFS is therefore part of Longhorn RWX, not simply its opposite. Longhorn also supports NFS as a backupstore protocol. Longhorn terminology, v1.13.0

The practical comparison is usually between Longhorn-managed storage—such as a single-writer block volume or a Longhorn RWX volume—and a separate NFS export provisioned for Kubernetes. Those arrangements differ in how shared access is delivered and which components you must provide.
When each arrangement may fit
Longhorn block storage
Choose a Longhorn block volume when the workload needs a volume attached to a node rather than a filesystem mounted concurrently by several nodes. That is a different access model from shared NFS; verify that the workload’s required access mode matches the volume you create.

Longhorn generic RWX
Longhorn describes generic RWX volumes as “Suitable for general shared storage and multi-node file access workloads,” but also says they are “Not intended for general shared filesystem workloads.” Both statements apply to this RWX mode; they do not establish that every application that can mount a shared filesystem is a good fit. Each client node needs an NFSv4 client. The feature does not support live migration: during migration, access remains with the source workload until migration finishes and the destination takes over. The documented recovery behavior also depends on unique node hostnames.

A separately provisioned NFS share
A separate NFS share can be a simpler Kubernetes storage path if you already operate an appropriate NFS server and want workloads to use its exports. Kubernetes does not create that server for you. Its documentation says, “Kubernetes doesn’t include an internal NFS provisioner”; a StorageClass needs an external provisioner, and its configuration identifies the NFS server and exported path. That route means the NFS service and its failure domain sit outside Longhorn’s RWX share-manager arrangement. Decide who will provision and maintain the server, exports, and recovery process before treating it as the simpler option.

Compare the operational responsibilities

The Kubernetes documentation describes an external-provisioner approach, including examples such as NFS Ganesha with an external provisioner and the NFS subdir external provisioner. It does not imply that Kubernetes itself runs the NFS server. Kubernetes StorageClasses
For either choice, map the workload’s file-access and locking pattern, client requirements, server and network failure domains, and backup/restore path. The cited documentation describes architecture and behavior; it does not establish which option is faster or cheaper for a particular cluster.

Know Longhorn RWX’s outage behavior
Longhorn v1.13.0 documents default NFS mount options softerr, timeo=600, and retrans=5. If the NFS server remains inaccessible, requests can fail with ETIMEDOUT or EIO, and data loss may occur. These are version-specific documented defaults and warnings, not universal NFS settings. Confirm the Longhorn version you run before applying them. Longhorn RWX Volume documentation, v1.13.0
Custom mount options can be set with the StorageClass nfsOptions parameter. Longhorn does not validate that string, so an invalid option may prevent a mount or volume creation. Treat changes as configuration that needs validation against the deployed version, not as a harmless tuning field.

Fast failover is a recovery mechanism, not an uptime promise
Longhorn documents lease-based monitoring of the RWX NFS server pod. If that pod is unresponsive, the mechanism can create a replacement on another node. It does not promise zero interruption, and it does not describe failover for a separately operated NFS server. Longhorn RWX Volume Fast Failover, v1.13.0
A practical decision checklist
- Need a node-attached block device, or concurrent shared-file access?
- If shared files are needed, does the application fit Longhorn’s stated RWX scope?
- Do client nodes have the NFS requirements for the selected arrangement?
- For a separate NFS StorageClass, is there an external provisioner and an operated NFS server?
- Do the failure domains and recovery behavior match your expectations?
- Which backup and restore mechanism protects the data if a server or volume fails?
Without details about a particular cluster’s hardware, workload, network, existing services, and maintenance needs, there is no evidence-based way to say that one option “didn’t make sense here.” The defensible choice is the one whose access model and operational responsibilities fit the actual deployment.
