Long file paths in Windows: Group Policy vs. the Registry setting

By Freedom251 Team · · 10 min read

Use Group Policy on managed computers and the Registry for a deliberate local change. Both methods control the same LongPathsEnabled setting. Neither method, by itself, makes every Windows program accept long paths: the application must also support the long-path behavior and, for the documented Win32 opt-in, declare longPathAware in its manifest.

Windows traditionally used a 260-character Win32 path limit. Microsoft documents longer-path support for many common Win32 file and directory functions beginning with Windows 10 version 1607, but this is an application opt-in rather than a universal switch.

What the two methods actually change

Group Policy and direct Registry editing are two administration paths to the same Windows setting. The setting is a machine-wide REG_DWORD named LongPathsEnabled under:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlFileSystem

When its data is 1, Windows enables the long-path behavior described in Microsoft’s Win32 documentation. The Group Policy setting writes or controls that same value; it is not a separate long-path engine.

The change matters because legacy Win32 APIs commonly enforced MAX_PATH, defined by Microsoft as 260 characters. Starting with Windows 10 version 1607, many common Win32 file and directory functions can work with longer paths when the application opts in. That qualification is essential: Windows does not promise that every program, shell, command, library, or user interface will accept an arbitrarily long path.

Choose the method by how the computer is administered

Question Group Policy Direct Registry setting
What it changes The LongPathsEnabled behavior The LongPathsEnabled value
Where it is configured Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > System > Filesystem > Enable Win32 long paths HKLMSYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlFileSystem, value LongPathsEnabled, type REG_DWORD
Best fit Centrally managed computers and policy-based administration A specific local computer where an administrator intentionally manages the Registry
What it cannot do alone Make an unmodified application long-path-aware Make an unmodified application long-path-aware

There is no evidence that one method gives a computer more path-length capability than the other. The practical distinction is governance: policy is easier to deploy and audit across managed devices, while a Registry edit is direct and useful for a standalone or test machine.

Enable long paths with Group Policy

When this is the appropriate route

Use the policy setting when the computer is administered through domain, local, or other policy-based controls. It gives administrators a named setting that can be included in the organization’s normal configuration and change-management process. Microsoft also documents an ADMX-backed device-management policy for deployments that use a management platform rather than the Local Group Policy Editor.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You need administrative rights to change computer policy. On a domain-managed computer, an organization’s policy may be applied centrally; follow that process instead of making an isolated local change that could be replaced at the next policy refresh.

Local Group Policy Editor steps

  1. Sign in with an account permitted to change computer policy.
  2. Open the Local Group Policy Editor by running gpedit.msc.
  3. Go to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > System > Filesystem.
  4. Open Enable Win32 long paths.
  5. Select Enabled, then choose Apply and OK.
  6. Close the editor. Apply the computer-policy refresh used by your organization, or restart Windows before testing an affected application.

The policy is a computer setting, not a per-user preference. It therefore belongs under Computer Configuration, and changing a user-policy branch will not enable it.

What to verify after changing policy

  • Reopen the policy item and confirm that it displays Enabled.
  • Check the Registry value described in the next section if you need to confirm the resulting machine state.
  • Close and reopen the application you intend to test. A process that was already running may have cached the old setting.

Enable long paths directly in the Registry

Registry Editor procedure

Use this method when you are intentionally making a local machine configuration change and Registry editing is permitted by your support policy. Editing the wrong value under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE can affect the operating system, so verify the path and value name before saving.

  1. Sign in with administrator rights.
  2. Run regedit.exe.
  3. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlFileSystem.
  4. Find LongPathsEnabled. If it does not exist, create a new DWORD (32-bit) Value with exactly that name.
  5. Open the value and set its data to 1. The required type is REG_DWORD; hexadecimal or decimal display produces the same value for 1.
  6. Close Registry Editor, then restart the affected application. Restart Windows if applications that started before the change still do not recognize it.

Equivalent command-line change

An administrator can make the same change with the built-in Registry command:

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
reg add "HKLMSYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlFileSystem" /v LongPathsEnabled /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f

The command writes the documented value; it does not modify an application’s executable or manifest. Use it only in an elevated command prompt or an administrative deployment script, and treat the resulting machine change as you would a Registry edit.

Confirm the value

To read the value from an elevated command prompt, run:

reg query "HKLMSYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlFileSystem" /v LongPathsEnabled

A successful result should identify LongPathsEnabled as a REG_DWORD with data equivalent to 0x1. If the value is absent or set to zero, the machine setting is not enabled through the Registry.

The application still has to opt in

The manifest requirement

For the documented Win32 behavior, Microsoft requires the application to declare longPathAware in its application manifest. A typical manifest declaration is represented below; the exact surrounding manifest and namespace declarations depend on the application:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
<application>
  <windowsSettings>
    <longPathAware>true</longPathAware>
  </windowsSettings>
</application>

The code example illustrates the required declaration, not a drop-in replacement for every project’s manifest. Developers must place the element in the manifest format supported by their target Windows application and build process.

Enabling the machine setting cannot retrofit this declaration. If a program was compiled without long-path awareness, Windows configuration alone does not change the program’s path handling.

Support differs by tool and version

Do not infer support from the operating system setting. Microsoft documents NuGet.exe 4.8 and later as supporting long paths in relevant scenarios, while documenting different behavior among the dotnet CLI, Visual Studio/MSBuild, and software that uses NuGet libraries. The exact tool version, API path, and operation matter.

Before changing a fleet-wide setting, check the documentation for the application that will create, copy, restore, archive, or compile the long paths. A tool may support long paths for one operation but still fail in another component, or a newer release may have support that an older release lacks.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why a 260-character path can still fail

  • The program is not manifested as long-path-aware. This is the most important limitation of the machine setting.
  • The process started before the change. Windows caches the Registry setting per process after the first affected Win32 file or directory call. Closing and reopening the program gives it a chance to read the new state.
  • The tool uses an unsupported interface. The setting covers the documented Win32 opt-in behavior, not every Windows API or user interface.
  • A component in the workflow is older than the component you tested. A package manager, build tool, editor, backup utility, or plug-in may impose its own limitation.
  • The policy did not reach the computer you changed. On a managed device, verify the effective policy and resulting Registry value rather than assuming that a local editor change is authoritative.

Process caching and restart rules

Microsoft states that Windows caches the LongPathsEnabled value per process after the first affected Win32 file or directory call. Consequently, an application that was open while you changed Group Policy or the Registry may continue using its previous state.

  1. Save work and close every instance of the affected application, including background processes that belong to it.
  2. Start a new instance and repeat the operation that previously failed.
  3. If the new process still behaves as before, restart Windows. Microsoft notes that a reboot might be required for all applications to recognize the value, especially when they began before the setting was changed.
  4. If a reboot does not help, stop changing the machine setting and investigate application support and the exact tool version.

Troubleshooting by symptom

The policy says Enabled, but the Registry shows zero or no value

Check that you edited the computer setting at Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > System > Filesystem > Enable Win32 long paths, not a similarly named user setting. On a managed computer, refresh policy through the organization’s approved process and then query the Registry again. If policy management is authoritative, a local Registry edit is not a substitute for correcting the deployed policy.

The Registry shows 1, but the same application still fails

Restart the application first, then reboot if necessary. Next, verify that the application version supports long paths and that its manifest contains the required longPathAware declaration. If either condition is missing, the machine setting cannot make that application work with the path.

One tool works and another tool fails on the same computer

This is expected when the tools have different manifests, libraries, or versions. Record the exact executable and version that succeeds, then check the failing tool’s own documentation. Microsoft’s NuGet guidance is an example of why compatibility must be evaluated per tool rather than assumed from the operating system.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Only newly opened projects or folders work

That pattern usually points to process state or to different components handling the operation. Close all related processes, restart them, and test again. If the result remains inconsistent, identify which component performs the failing file operation; the front-end application may be long-path-aware while a helper process is not.

The failure occurs on a managed fleet

Compare an affected computer’s effective policy and Registry value with a computer that works. Confirm that both received the same policy and that the tested application has the same version. A machine setting can be correct while the application deployment remains inconsistent.

Managed deployment considerations

Group Policy for organization-wide administration

For domain or centrally managed computers, configure Enable Win32 long paths through the organization’s policy process. This provides a documented setting administrators can include with other computer configuration controls and makes the intended state visible to policy administrators.

ADMX-backed device management

Microsoft also documents an ADMX-backed device-management CSP that maps to this policy and describes support for manifested Win32 applications and packaged Store applications. The cited mapping is documented for Windows 11 version 21H2 and later; verify the current device-management documentation for the Windows editions and management service you operate before using a version-specific deployment profile.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Local Registry edits for exceptions and testing

A direct Registry change is practical for a standalone computer, a lab machine, or a controlled troubleshooting test. It is less suitable as the long-term mechanism for a fleet because administrators must track each machine and account for policy management that may later apply a different value.

Security and change-control notes

  • The value is under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, so changing it requires elevated rights.
  • Enabling long paths does not grant an application access to files it could not otherwise read or write. Normal file permissions, sharing permissions, and application security checks still apply.
  • Do not treat the setting as a workaround for poor path design. Shorter project roots and predictable directory structures can reduce compatibility problems even when long-path support is enabled.
  • Document the machine setting together with the application versions that require it. A future tool update may change long-path behavior independently of Windows configuration.

A practical decision process

  1. Identify the failing operation. Note the exact application, executable, version, and action that fails, such as restore, copy, build, extraction, or file creation.
  2. Determine administration scope. If several managed computers need the setting, use the Group Policy or approved device-management route. If one local computer needs a controlled change, the Registry route may be simpler.
  3. Enable the machine setting once. Do not configure both methods as if they were independent features; they target the same LongPathsEnabled behavior.
  4. Restart the affected process. Reboot Windows when a newly started process still does not see the change.
  5. Verify application support. Confirm the manifest’s longPathAware declaration or the vendor’s documentation for the exact tool version.
  6. Retest the original operation. Use the same path and workflow that exposed the problem. A different file operation may be handled by a different component.
  7. Escalate the application issue, not the Windows setting, when appropriate. If the value is enabled and the process has been restarted, an unsupported application or library is the likely limiting factor.

Frequently misunderstood points

Is Group Policy more powerful than the Registry?

No. The policy is another control for the same Registry-backed setting. Its advantage is centralized administration, not a higher path-length limit.

Does setting the value to 1 remove all path limits?

No. It enables the documented long-path behavior for applications that opt in. Legacy applications and unsupported interfaces can continue to fail, and Microsoft does not describe this as permission for arbitrary paths in every Windows program.

Does Windows 10 version 1607 mean every Windows 10 application supports long paths?

No. That Windows version marks availability of longer paths for many common Win32 functions when an application opts in. The application’s manifest and implementation remain decisive.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I edit the Registry if Group Policy is available?

On a managed computer, use the organization’s policy method so the setting is consistent and supportable. Use a direct Registry edit where local administration is intentional and permitted.

Source and version context

Microsoft’s Maximum Path Length Limitation Win32 documentation, last updated July 16, 2024, supplies the 260-character MAX_PATH figure, the Windows 10 version 1607 availability note, the Registry location and value, the longPathAware requirement, and the per-process caching behavior. Microsoft’s NuGet documentation supplies the NuGet.exe 4.8-and-later example and shows why tool compatibility must be checked separately. Microsoft’s ADMX policy documentation maps the Group Policy setting to LongPathsEnabled and describes the device-management route.

Those documents establish the configuration and compatibility boundaries; they do not establish that Group Policy or direct Registry editing is universally superior. Choose the delivery method that matches how the computer is administered, then validate the application that actually handles the long path.
