Samsung’s published instructions describe manual routes to long-exposure effects rather than a one-tap automatic long-exposure mode. On a Galaxy phone, you create the effect by setting a slower shutter speed in Pro mode, or by using Expert RAW, which adds RAW capture and, on some models, astrophotography and light-drawing workflows. Which route is available depends on your exact phone model and software version, so confirm those before you follow any setting value.
Choose the right route on your Galaxy
Pro mode is the everyday option, because it sits in the stock Camera app. Expert RAW is a separate download from the Galaxy Store and suits photographers who want RAW files or the specialised night-sky and light-drawing features described below.

Check your phone before you start
- Expert RAW: Samsung UK lists availability on Galaxy S20 or later. Confirm that it installs for your model from the Galaxy Store.
- Astrophotography and multiple-exposure Labs options: Samsung’s cited instructions apply to S23 series and S22 series devices running “T OS”. Check your software version in the phone’s software update screen.
- Special photo options: these require the 12MP resolution setting, according to Samsung UK (2024).
- Regions and features: Samsung may change app features, supported devices and interface labels. Treat the labels in this guide as a starting point and confirm them on your screen.
Long exposure in Pro mode
Use this procedure for moving water, light trails, clouds or panning. The labels and mode placement can differ by model and software version.

- Open the Camera app and switch to Pro mode.
- Select the main camera lens.
- Brace the phone or mount it on a stable tripod so it cannot move during the exposure.
- Lower the ISO first to avoid an overly bright result, then lengthen the shutter speed gradually while checking the preview.
- Focus before making the exposure. If the preview hunts, switch to manual focus where your model offers it.
- Trigger the shot with a timer or a remote rather than touching the screen, so your finger does not add shake.
- Review the image at full size and adjust the shutter speed in small steps until the effect looks right.
Moving water, lights, clouds and panning
A slower shutter admits more light and renders movement as trails or blur. Samsung’s Galaxy S23 Ultra example uses Pro mode at 1/15 to 1/20 second for a panning or long-exposure effect (Samsung Newsroom Malaysia, 2023). That setting is an example for that phone and that effect, not a recommendation for every Galaxy or every scene. In bright daylight the shutter may still be too fast for a slow effect. The sources reviewed do not establish that Pro mode works with physical neutral-density filters on every model, so treat filter use as something to verify on your own device.

Night sky and star scenes
For supported devices, Samsung’s Expert RAW astrophotography instructions (Samsung UK, 2024) say to open Astrophotography mode, adjust focus, white balance and exposure time, and optionally turn on Sky Guide. Samsung’s described astrophotography and multiple-exposure Labs options apply to S23 series and S22 series devices running “T OS”, and Special photo options require 12MP resolution. If your phone is not in that group, use Pro mode and the steps above instead, and expect results to depend on your sensor and software.
Light drawing
Samsung’s Galaxy S23 Ultra light-drawing example (Samsung Newsroom Malaysia, 2023) uses Expert RAW with manual focus and a 15-second shutter exposure. ISO is adjusted for the RGB tube light, the phone sits on a tripod, and the portrait subject stays still for the exposure. The example also names a small LED soft light and an RGB tube light. These are creative tools for that effect, not requirements for every long exposure.

Stability and accessories
- Tripod: Samsung recommends keeping the phone as steady as possible for Night mode and using a tripod if possible, and its light-drawing example includes one. When you compare phone tripods, check clamp compatibility with your phone, stability, setup height, packed size and mounting method. The sources reviewed contain no comparative tests of tripod brands, so this guide does not rank them.
- Bluetooth camera remote: an optional way to trigger a mounted phone with less handling. Verify that the remote works with your camera app before buying, because the sources reviewed do not establish compatibility across Samsung devices.
- LED soft light or RGB tube light: optional, and useful mainly for light-drawing portraits.
Troubleshooting common problems
- The image is too bright: reduce ISO or shorten the shutter speed. On a device that supports it, look at Expert RAW’s software ND feature. Availability depends on the device, so do not assume every Galaxy has the same control.
- The whole frame is blurred: the phone moved. Add bracing or a tripod, and avoid touching the screen during capture.
- Only moving elements are blurred: this is usually the intended effect. If you wanted sharp subjects, shorten the shutter speed.
- The control you expected is missing: check that Expert RAW is installed from the Galaxy Store, confirm your model and software version against the list above, and remember that mode labels can change.
