A guest can authenticate by fingerprint, keypad, phone, physical key or compatible NFC/RFID tag; after an electronic unlock, they still turn the thumbturn by hand. That distinction matters if you expect a rental lock to operate like a fully motorized smart deadbolt.
What the vacation-rental test found
In a review published September 14, 2026, CNET reviewer Tyler Lacoma tried the Lasta’s access options from the perspective of a guest arriving at a vacation rental. He reported that setup was relatively simple and that TapCom video calls, audio calls, unlock requests and geofencing worked in his tests on two phones. Those are the reviewer’s hands-on observations, not evidence of long-term reliability or performance across every phone and rental setup.

The syndicated review gave the lock a score of 8.0. Lacoma’s main usability surprise was the need to turn the deadbolt manually after the electronic mechanism released it. His test supports a useful conclusion for hosts: the guest-access features may simplify arrival and communication, but the lock’s physical operation is not fully hands-off.
How the Lasta unlocks—and what it does not do
Lockly describes the Lasta as a non-motorized deadbolt using its ManoTurn approach. Electronic authentication releases the mechanism; the person at the door moves the bolt with the thumbturn. It is therefore different from a motorized smart lock that drives the bolt open or closed after a command.

That design may suit a host who values several ways to authenticate and is comfortable explaining the thumbturn. It may be a poor fit when guests expect the door to unlock and relock entirely by itself, or when the person entering cannot easily turn the thumbturn. Make the manual step clear in arrival instructions and consider how it will feel to guests using the door from both sides.

Access methods
The Lasta supports fingerprint, keypad, phone/app, physical key and NFC/RFID tag access, according to the review and Lockly’s product information. Lockly lists capacity for up to 200 access codes and 99 fingerprints. These are manufacturer specifications; they do not establish how many guests a particular host should enroll or how a rental platform’s booking workflow integrates with the lock.

Having several entry methods can provide alternatives when a guest cannot use one method, but it also means the host should decide how credentials will be issued, explained and removed between stays. Confirm the exact credential-management process in the current app before relying on it for turnover.

The review’s positive results apply to its two-phone test, not every network, phone or property condition.

TapCom service terms are time-sensitive. Lockly’s separate TapCom information advertises up to six months of premium service for a compatible Lockly lock and up to three months for supported third-party locks, followed by paid plans. It also cautions that compatibility can vary and third-party integrations can change. Check the current service period, fees and compatibility before treating any TapCom feature as a continuing no-cost part of a rental operation.
Battery claims: read the usage assumptions
Lockly specifies eight AA alkaline batteries and estimates up to three years in Wi-Fi mode at an average of two unlocks per day. It separately estimates up to eleven months at an average of ten unlocks per day with keypad, fingerprint and app use. These are manufacturer estimates under different stated usage assumptions, not independent battery tests. The reviewer explicitly noted that the multi-year claim still needs time to verify.

Lockly also lists a Type-C backup power socket. Treat it as a backup provision, not a substitute for maintaining batteries: establish a battery-check and replacement routine that fits the property’s turnover and access needs.

Check door fit before ordering
Lockly lists an adjustable 2⅜- or 2¾-inch backset, a 2⅛-inch bore, and support for doors 1⅜ to 3⅛ inches thick. A separate extension kit is listed for thicker doors. Measure the actual door and existing hardware rather than assuming a standard deadbolt will fit.

- Verify the door thickness is within the listed range, or determine whether the extension kit applies.
- Confirm the bore is 2⅛ inches and identify which of the two supported backsets matches the door.
- Check the installation instructions and any current compatibility guidance for your door and existing hardware before purchase.
Who should consider the Lasta?
The Lasta is most compelling for a host who wants multiple guest authentication methods and a way to communicate at the door, and who accepts manual thumbturn operation. A host seeking a motorized bolt should look for a different design. Also factor TapCom’s current service terms into the decision if its communication features are central to your guest workflow.
